High Trestle Trail Art Bridge Woodward to Madrid Iowa

Visit our website. The High Trestle Trail Art Bridge over the Des Moines River between Woodward and Madrid, Iowa is no boring hike -- day or night! Be sure to bring a flashlight if you walk it at night; the bicyclists sharing the paved walkway will appreciate it! Built on a former railroad line, the High Trestle Trail and bridge stay true to this central Iowa region's heritage of rail and mining. The square steel frames over the bridge are arranged just so to give the illusion of a mine shaft. Lit up at night in blue lights, walking under the framework makes you feel a part of the art. It is definitely worth the trip! Be sure you catch the end of the video -- is that a train we hear?

Riding to the Unique Designed High Trestle Trail Bridge in Madrid, Iowa.

After completing RAGBRAI (bike ride across the State of Iowa), we visit the High Trestle Trail Bridge outside the town of Madrid, Iowa. We bypassed this attraction while riding RAGBRAI and wanted to explore it afterwards. It is less than three miles from the Madrid parking lot to the bridge and an easy, flat ride.

The 13-story-high (40-meter) and nearly half-mile-long (770-meter) trestle bridge provides scenic views of the Des Moines River Valley and is located near mining shafts that were worked by immigrant families and others who settled nearby.

The bridge decking incorporates a decorative structure that represents the view through a mine shaft, and its design includes decorative lighting.

The bridge was originally built in the 1970s to carry rail traffic and now supports a new deck designed for pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

this is a trip across the High Trestle Trail Bridge in September of 2020. I rode my reliable Specialized Rock Hopper which I have conveyed into a great gravel bike. I carry the Rock Hopper with me on all my trips since its easy to ride and fits into the back of my truck.
The rail trail is located near Madrid Iowa. The bridge is real cool and it lights up at night. Expect people to be walking on the bridge since its a cool place. It crosses the Des Moines River.
Enjoy!

101 Flying Over Madrid High Trestle Bridge

Visit and drone flight over the Madrid, Iowa High Trestle bridge.

In 1888, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, commonly known at the Milwaukee Road, built a steel girder bridge to cross the Des Moines River, 11 miles upstream from Iowa’s largest city and capitol.

In 1913, the railroad company replaced the 25-year-old bridge with a steel double track bridge.

In the 1950s, in order to provide flood control on this tributary of the Mississippi River, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began planning a dam and reservoir. Construction on the lake and dam began in 1965.

The concrete pier pads of the 1913 steel trestle bridge were not designed to be submerged and would have to be replaced before the reservoir became fully operation in 1977.

In 1973, the Iowa Corps of Engineers constructed a new concrete bridge with large, modern concrete piers designed to allow for inundation.

The Milwaukee Road struggled financially throughout much of its existence and this new bridge was used for 30 years until the rail line was abandoned in 2003. Union Pacific removed the bridge’s deck plates and I-beams and used them to build the Kate Shelley Bridge that we visited in video number 99.

Much of Milwaukee Road’s track has been turned into trails and one of the original bridge's concrete abutments was left in place, and today it functions as a lookout platform for viewing this bridge.

After 2004, the 22 concrete pillars sat disconnected in the valley as a new trail was being planned. By 2008, 20 miles of trail had opened but without a complete bridge to connect the halves.

Union Pacific let go of 439 acres of land and with Congressional and local monies, grants, donations, and the help of Iowa’s Arts Council, the bridge project got underway.

The spiraling steel frames around the concrete roadbed are supposed to evoke the sense of descending into a mine shaft, a nod to the history of mining in central Iowa.
The bridge has lights that are switched on at night and turn an already dramatic sight into a surreal experience.
