7 NORMAL Things NOT TO DO in Nairobi!

1. Don't Light up in Public!
According to Inside the murky world of Nairobi's smoking zones | Tobacco industry | The Guardian
The Kenyan government has banned advertising, marketing, and smoking in public places, and in Nairobi, they are especially strict about it. In the city center is a wooden shed that is the only place where you can smoke. Lighting up n the street could earn you a fine of up to $485 or you could even be arrested.

2. Don't Cross The Road Without Looking.
According to Things They Don’t Tell You About Visiting Nairobi (theculturetrip.com)
Traffic lights and road signs are pretty much taken as suggestions rather than obligations. Some claim that this is because of confusion between the green light meaning go for cars and the green man meaning go for pedestrians.
Always look both ways and never assume that you have right of way.

3. Don't Cross The Road Whilst On The Phone.
This isn't just because using your phone whilst crossing the road is distracting, in Nairobi, it is actually illegal too. According to Things They Don’t Tell You About Visiting Nairobi (theculturetrip.com)
It is illegal to use your phone whilst crossing the road and doing so could earn you a hefty fine.

4. Don't Take Shortcuts Through Alleyways.
According to
Although Nairobi is generally a safe place, you are a tourist and therefore a potential target, especially if you end up in an alleyway that the locals know is best to avoid.
Stay on the main streets and shopping areas, take your time and relax, it is better to take a bit longer to get somewhere and to arrive with all your belongings.

5. Don't forget about M-Pesa
Nairobi is big on Mobile Banking and M-Pesa is king.
Basically, as you would with a pay-as-you-go phone, you top up your phone with credit and can then transfer that credit to other people or businesses using pin-protected SMS messages. In 2011, M-Pesa had 17 million users in Kenya alone, and nowadays it's used by everyone. If you don't want to be carrying around a lot of cash with you, get M-Pesa.

6. Don't forget to get your Visa.

You used to be able to get apply for your visa once you arrived in Kenya, as of January 2021 you have to have your visa before you leave your home country. Fortunately, it can all be processed online but is does take some time so don't think you can get it done while you wait at the airport.

7. Don't say Jambo.
According to 23 Things to Know Before You Go to Nairobi (roadsandkingdoms.com)
People in Nairobi only use Jambo a form of saying Hello with tourists. If you want to say Hello and gain some respect with the locals use Habari which is like How are you or Niaje which is Nairobi street slang for How's it doing.
If you're the one being asked, you can answer with Mzuri good, Si mbaya not bad or Poa cool. Try to learn some Kiswahili before traveling to Nairobi, the locals will appreciate it and probably be more inclined to help you and less inclined to try to overcharge you.

Experience Kenya: A day in Nairobi

Ultra-modern skyscrapers, chic cocktail bars, and hip hotels. No, we’re not talking about London or New York — we’re actually describing Kenya’s quirky and cosmopolitan capital: Nairobi. That’s right — this city is full of surprises, and you’ll be amazed from the get-go when you visit. If you’re planning an adventure through Kenya, there’s a good chance your trip will begin and end in this exciting city, so follow along and get ready to be wowed — this is what it’s like to travel in Nairobi.

This city is so much more than just a gateway to Kenya’s wilderness; Nairobi is one of the most modern and fastest growing places on the continent, boasting a vibrant metropolitan atmosphere and a buzzing food and restaurant scene. Spend some time here and you’ll find traditional marketplaces alongside world-class hotels, edgy cocktail bars, and international restaurants. It’s the type of place where you can practice your haggling skills and stock up on souvenirs at a Masai market by day, and tuck into tacos, gourmet burgers, or traditional Kenyan cuisine by night. And speaking of food, this city is becoming increasingly known for its culinary offerings, with new cafes and restaurants popping up constantly. If you’re a foodie, you’re in for a real treat!

There’s no doubt about it: Kenya’s national parks are one of the country’s biggest draws, but Nairobi has its fair share of wildlife-centric attractions to explore as well! And the best part? You can get up close and personal with all sorts of exotic animals without leaving the confines of the city! David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust — a sanctuary for orphaned elephants and black rhinos — offers the perfect introductory to Kenya’s incredible wildlife. On a visit here, you can learn all about elephant conservation and meet and feed the adorable baby pachyderms.

Pleasantly surprised by all that Nairobi has to offer? We thought you might be! If you can’t wait any longer to start planning your trip to Kenya, head over to TourRadar to check out this itinerary and a range of others just like it!

⏩ Why is Kenya a tourist destination?
Kenya's wildlife and unique landscapes have attracted growth in ecotourism, and much of its economy is now primarily sustained by foreign revenue brought in by tourism, causing a myriad of positive and negative impacts to its culture, ecosystems, and lifestyles of its local people.

⏩ Why do foreigners love Kenya?
According to the report, Kenya ranks well in the peace and security category and sports, but the country scores poorly in science and technology and employability categories. Kenya's friendliness and welcoming nature also ranked well, and so did the country's natural beauty.

How to spend 2 days in Nairobi, Kenya! Africa vlog pt 3

I had a 2 day pitstop in Nairobi before I headed to my one week safari to see The Great Migration. Nairobi is very city like especially the shopping centers. We also took this time to stock up on some meds at the pharmacy for the safari just incase.

Hotel we stayed in: Azure Hotel Nairobi Westlands (would recommend)
Visited: Giraffe center, Nairobi Safari walk, Nairobi Village, Ya Ya shopping centre, and David Sheldrick Wildlife Project.
Ate at: Java House and Art Caffe (HIGHLY recommend, perfect place to watch the sunset and grab a nice drink)

NAIROBI City Guide | Kenya | Travel Guide

Nairobi is the capital, and the largest city of Kenya. Nairobi has a population of 4.3 million.
As a cosmopolitan metropolis of more than three million inhabitants, Nairobi's dynamism and striking contrasts keep fascinating travellers. Modernity and wilderness co-exist in pure harmony.
On one hand, downtown and the business district, its skyscrapers, cultural institutions, restaurants serving local specialities and famous nightlife will all satisfy your craving for discoveries. On the other hand, Nairobi national park, the oldest in the country – where lions, leopards, antelopes, rhinos and buffalos roam – will grant your wish for an authentic getaway.
