I ALMOST DIDN’T MAKE IT… HIKING VOLCANO ACATENANGO, GUATEMALA! (FULL TOUR & TIPS)
If you’re traveling Guatemala and are looking for things to do in Guatemala and are up for a heart pumping adventure hiking up Volcán Acatenango is a great option. Volcano Acatenango is located around an hour from Antigua and starts at an elevation of 2,400 m. In this Guatemala Travel Vlog I will take you through my entire experience of hiking Volcan Acatenango, all the ups and the downs, literally! After a 5 hour hike straight up we reach base camp which is located at 3,600 meters. It’s here where we rest, take in the views of Volcán Fuego and sleep for the night before ascending to the peak of Acatenango for sunrise, 3,976 m (13,044 feet). This hike was the hardest physical activity I have ever completed and I will be honest there were many times I wanted to turn back around but knowing you were there with me kept me going! Hiking Volcan Acatenango, Guatemala - Overnight Trekking Tour 13,000 ft Summit
Volcan Acatenango is a 13,041 ft. (3,976 m) volcano that sits right next to one of the world's most active volcanoes: Volcan Fuego. Hiking Acatenango on the overnight tour is one of the most adventurous things to do in Guatemala. You can get some of the best views in Central America by doing this hike. Views of Volcan Fuego erupting its lava and ash, and views of sunrise over the beautiful country of Guatemala.
The weather on the day of Joe and I's trek was on the unlucky side and we had hurricane force winds at the summit. But it was an epic journey, nonetheless.

We Hiked a Volcano! Was the Acatenango Hike Worth It? | Sunrise Summit | Guatemala Travel Guide
The overnight Acatenango volcano hike was one of the main reasons we wanted to come to Guatemala. Climbing the third highest volcano in Central America at sunrise and looking out over other volcanoes that make up the Pacific Ring of Fire bathed in golden light was a moment neither of us will ever forget.
After doing lots of research on the best tour operators, we are so glad we went with Wicho & Charlie's for several reasons:
1) We felt well looked after throughout the whole hiking experience. They provide high-quality kit that is either included (e.g. windbreakers, hats, gloves, fleeces, water bottles) or for hire (e.g. backpacks, hiking poles). Their instructions were comprehensive and the guides were lovely.
2) From what we could see, they are one of the only companies (if not the only) whose base camp is made of actual solid structure cabins. These are not only warmer, more comfortable, and better protected from the strong winds at the top of the volcano, but also safer in the case of an eruption from Fuego.
3) We also loved their commitment to giving back to communities and protecting animals and the environment. All meals were delicious, nutritious and plant-based. They do not use any single-use plastics and other pollutants. They train and upskill the local guides with English lessons, first-aid training, etc. They also support Santuario Vida Animal shelter by paying the salary of a working to help out at the shelter and also with 2,000 to 4,000 pounds of food.
4) With all your snacks and food, they also provide you with dog food to bring up for the dogs who live on Acatenagno (if you want to!)

Sleeping on Top of a Volcano! (Acatenango Volcano, Guatemala)
It's an exhausting 6 hours climb, but what a view! Heavy fog draped the summit that night. Volcano Fuego erupted and rumbled in front of us.
Spending the night on top of a volcano is an exciting experience.

So don’t forget your toilet paper! The guides will provide you with a bag to put your toilet paper in, as there are no bins either. ACATENANGO: WHAT TO KNOW. TRIP PREPARATION
In an effort to help you achieve your adventure goals, the Pro-Team at OX execute a Pre-Trip Meeting at our office the night before your climb of the Acatenango volcano.
This video is a summary of that meeting. It is not a replacement. We strongly recommend your attendance at the OX Pre-Trip Meeting.
The Problem with Volcan Acatenango is that it can be very challenging, especially for those with little to no experience with this sort of hiking / camping adventure. The hike begins at the trailhead which is roughly 2400 m / 8,000ft. The summit is 3976 m / 13,044 ft.
Issues such as physical exhaustion, dehydration, altitude sickness, hypothermia and more are some of the problems we strive to avoid due to proper preparation.
This video is meant as supplemental information and review of this meeting. We strongly suggest you attend the meeting so you can ask questions in person to your Professional OX Guide and arrive in the morning prepared.
For those of you who have missed our Pre-Trip Meeting, please reference this video to help you in your preparation and be sure to arrive early at our office so that you can meet your guide and get any additional gear and information you might need for the trek up the volcano.

My CRAZIEST Travel Experience | Volcano Acatenango Guatemala
Welcome to Volcano Acatenango Guatemala! In this Guatemala travel vlog, I take you with me on my craziest travel experience as I summit Volcano Acatenango in order to see incredible views of Central America’s most active volcano, Volcano Fuego. During this experience I saw LAVA for the first time, which ended up being one of the craziest experiences of my life.
Volcano Acatenango is located in southern Guatemala, about 1 hour away from the beautiful colonial town of Antigua. Volcano Acatenango is about 4,000 meters, or 13,000 feet, above sea level, so it is quite the hike up to the summit. But, hiking Volcano Acatenango is well worth the effort. Not only did I see an incredible sunrise and sunset, but I got to see Volcano Fuego up close!
Volcano Fuego is an active volcano that erupts every ~30 minutes. During the day, Volcano Fuego emits large grey clouds of smoke into the air. But, at night, Volcan Fuego erupts huge amounts of bright red lava. These explosions were HUGE and like nothing I have ever seen before. It was a magical experience.
If you visit Guatemala, I would highly recommend summiting Volcano Acatenango to see the incredible Volcano Fuego erupt, you won't regret it!

Climbing into HELL: Hiking Acatenango Volcano
Climbing the Acatenango Volcano was one of the most physically demanding and mentally challenging activities that I've ever done in my life. This hike will break you if you're not prepared!
Have you ever seen a volcano eruption? Ever seen a lava flow up close? Well, GET READY! Volcan de Acatenango wil PUSH YOU TO YOUR LIMITS.
I spent over 3 months traveling throughout Guatemala, and climbing Acatenango was my favorite memory. Hiking a volcano should be at the top of your travel bucket list!
Join me as we depart from Antigua, Guatemala, and then gear up to go on an overnight volcano hike. We'll be camping next to the active Fuego Volcano, and hiking to the summit to catch an unreal sunset.
Along the way we will meet travelers from all over the world!
TIPS FOR HIKING ACATENANGO VOLCANO:
1. Hire a porter--Trust me, you do not want to carry a giant bag up this mountain. Spend the extra money to support a local to carry your pack. Your knees, back, and spine will thank you.
2. Bring at least 5L of water. Drink at least 1.5 liters before you begin the hike. Hydration is key to preventing altitude sickness.
3. Dress warm and bring more layers than you think you will need. The volcano gets SO COLD at night.
4. Check the mountain forecast website to ensure you don't pick a day that will have rain, snow, or low visibility. This is easier said than done, but follow the website day by day and look for patterns. Also cross reference the forecast with what other hikers describe when they return.
5. ALWAYS TRUST THE GUIDES. I made a major mistake and trusted some random hiker to tell us where to go, and he was WRONG WRONG WRONG and we all regretted listening to him, instead of our guide.

Hiking Mt. Acatenango is quite possibly one of the wildest hikes in the world!
Climbing Acatenango, camping next to an active volcano. Then to be woken up to an eruption & lava spilling out before making the final summit at 4am.
Words alone cannot do this justice. What an experience.
There are a lot of tour companies operating this hike, after a few days of asking around and research we found the Soy Tours was the cheapest and offered the best overall experience. I would 100% recommend going through them :)

Climbing up on the majestic volcano Acatenango is far away from being easy... It requires strong physical and mental pace. Oh, it also includes plenty of pain! But I guarantee you that reaching up there is gonna be one of the best things you've done in your whole life! The eruptions of Fuego at night, will make all that pain go away :)
