The government said 23 people died in the fire at a prison housing dissidents in September.
The fire broke out on September 3 at the Kilinto prison, a high-security facility holding anti-government dissidents. The government said that 23 inmates had died during a stampede and from suffocation caused by the fire, while two others were killed when trying to escape the prison.
Kilinto prison, where a number of political prisoners are held, was set ablaze early Saturday. Eye witnesses say that random shootings are heard inside the sprawling compound of the prison. A number of leading dissidents including Bekele Gerba and Muslim rights activists are jailed at Qilinto.
