Journey Through Ethiopia - Africa Travel Documentary

Ethiopia is one of Africa’s most beautiful and fascinating countries, and a surprising travel destination. From spectacular mountain landscapes and national parks to vast lakes and mysterious deserts. From incredible wildlife to intriguing historic landmarks. From vibrant, fast growing cities to small villages and tribal regions, steeped in culture and traditions.

In this documentary style video, I will show you 10 beautiful places I visited, on a one-month journey through Ethiopia in 2019. I remember the smiles and welcoming attitude of the people, the incredible food, remarkable monuments, the stunning natural and urban landscapes. In all fairness, this was one of my best travels yet.

Sadly, however, at the time of editing this video, Ethiopia is in political and military conflict with the Northern Tigray region, which is causing great suffering to ordinary civilians. Like most people, I hope the relevant authorities can come to an agreement soon, and start rebuilding this beautiful land.

As a result of the conflict, some of the places in this video are currently inaccessible due to high security concerns. Always follow travel advice and consult local guides, to avoid putting yourself and others at risk.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start this journey in the small city of Lalibela, a deeply spiritual town popular with Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. The awe-inspiring monolithic churches are the highlight here, but meeting the many pilgrims is equally, if not more, rewarding. After Lalibela, we venture to the mysterious Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on Earth. It’s a bizarre desert landscape, with salt lakes, volcanoes, sulfur springs, and acidic pools. It feels like true adventure travel, but can only be done with experienced tour companies and guides.

The rock-hewn churches of the Tigray region are something unique, and Abuna Yemata Guh may be the most special of them all. This place of worship can only be reached on a steep and sometimes terrifying hike, but rewards travelers with incredible views, and a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The site is managed by several clergymen and priests.

The spectacular Simien mountains offer some of Africa’s best chances for hikes and longer treks, and are also home to the gelada baboons, nicknamed as ‘bleeding heart monkeys’. They live in troops and can live high in the mountains.

After spending some time in the nature, we continue our journey in Gondar, a friendly city with stunning historic monuments. Perhaps even more impressive is Aksum, with some of Ethiopia’s most iconic historic and religious sites, such as the towering obelisks (or stelea), and the Church of Saint Mary of Zion (which, according to legend, is the hiding place of the Ark of the Covenant, in a small chapel).

Addis Ababa is often overlooked by travelers, who rush themselves to the North and South of the country. But the vibrant capital city is an interesting place to spend a couple of days, and serves as a good introduction to Ethiopian culture and food. There are some great areas to be visited, including the famous Mercato, the largest market in Africa.

After Addis, we travel to the South of Ethiopia, which feels very different in many ways. The first stop here is Arba Minch, known for its wonderful Nechisar national park. Here, you can take boat trips on one of Ethiopia’s largest lakes, and spot crocodiles, pelicans, hippos, baboons and other wildlife. The Dorze village is not far from here, and offers a peak into traditional village life. Its friendly inhabitants have created a sustainable form of tourism, and visitors can witness (and take part in) the local economy at work, with cotton weaving, pottery, coffee ceremonies, bread production, and much more.

We finish this journey in the Omo Valley, which is home to many different ethnicities and tribes. It’s important to travel with local guides here, as these destinations often risk turning into so called ‘human safaris’. While tourism can have a positive effect on people’s lives, it’s crucial that it happens in a respectful and meaningful way.

The Lone Man Building a Cathedral By Hand

For 53 years, Justo Gallego has been building a cathedral by hand on the outskirts of Madrid almost entirely by himself. Gallego has no formal architecture or construction training, but that hasn't stopped him from toiling on this herculean task. At 90 years old, Gallego knows that he will not be able to finish the project in his lifetime. But he keeps at it anyway, day after day, driven by his faith.

1,664 Year Old Church in Ethiopia

Hey friends, three weeks ago we went to Ethiopia to shoot a video about Abuna Yemata. On the last day we were there we did a little tourism ourselves and went to Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. Two churches that our guide told us were from the 4th and 6th centuries.

If you ever took art history you may have seen some images of the frescos in these churches.

These churches are built into cliffs, thousands of meters high, and can be quite dangerous to get to. We hope you enjoy our mini docmunentary about these rock-hewn churches in Tigray, Ethiopia.

Dangerous climb to the Church in the Sky: Abune Yemata Guh. | Ethiopia vlog

I traveled to the Tigray region in Northern Ethiopia to make the dangerous climb to a monastery in the Gheralta mountains, called Abune Yemata Guh. It is one of the most inaccessible and hardest churches to get to. We traveled with @worldsunethiopiatours7029 to Abuna Yemata Guh, a church in the sandstone cliffs, over 8000 feet in the air. There is a priest who makes the climb every single day and he was there to show us the inside of the church.

You first have to hike for 40 minutes up the the natural rocks steps, until you reach a point where you have to take off your shoes and climb the rest straight up and barefoot. It was one of the scariest things I have ever done, but I am so happy I did it. This place is magical and very spiritual.

Along the journey, we visited the oldest mosque in Africa, ate traditional Tigrayan food, and met great Tigrayan people. This area was the center point of the Tigrayan war that lasted 2 years and started in 2020. There was so much destruction done to the area during that time, and luckily some of the heritage sites withstood the war.

Join me for a beautiful and risky adventure to the Church in the Sky.

Axum - Ark of the Covenant - Ethiopian Epiphany - Timkat part 1

Timkat is the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany. The Chapel of the Tablet in Axum allegedly houses the original Ark of the Covenant or Tabot. Tabot is taking out of the chapel during a Timkat . A priest carrying a covered Tabot on his head and parading through the streets to the pool area. Tabot is storing inside a ceremonial tent (Tabernacle) for first night.

Exploring Ethiopia's Highlands and It's hidden Mountain Monasteries

While most people come to Lalibela, Ethiopia, for it's 11 Rock-Hewn Churches, after a total of three visits to the churches we still had time to spare and were eager to explore Lalibela's surroundings. Craving for some physical activity the surrounding mountains were a welcome playground. Our good host Tedy offered us help by recommending a guide who would take us up to the Asheton Maryam Monastery. Sitting at almost 4000 meters, this is one of Ethiopia's highest sitting churches. However, this was just an arbitrary goal for us, as all we wanted was a good hard hike up a mountain :). We were not disappointed. Starting early in the morning, even before the sun was around the Mountains, we head towards the outer skirts of Lalibela to begin our ascend the mountain. On our way, people were coming down the mountain and were carrying goods, it was Saturday and the market would open soon. They were bringing Teff, Beans and other goods on Donkeys and Mules. Some were carrying Eucalyptus trunks which are used in Ethiopia for a lot of different things: Making Fire to prepare food, Building Homes, etc. People were greeting us with a friendly 'Selam' until we left the main road and headed into the less accessible territory. It was very cold since the sun rays were still hidden behind the mountains and hills but the beautiful scenery helped us to keep forward until, finally, we reached a plateau. Eucalyptus Woods and grain fields were scattered on the landscape and small houses started to appear. Ethiopia's rural population is scattered all around the country. Families live close to their lands so they can take care of their plants and stock. After the plateau, the Monastery was already in sight. Only about 700 meters of a cliff pathway was in front of us. Since it was Saturday, pilgrims from villages around Lalibela were coming to the Monastery too. We crossed the cliff and wanted to enter the Monastery, but we forgot to bring the entrance fee money ...

Ethiopia's Hidden Cave Churches Trailer

Episode 3 of Nate's BIG 5 African Adventures features the hidden rock churches located in the Gheralta Mountains, Ethiopia.

If you're looking for a truly off-the-beaten-track adventure that you'll never forget, contact Adventure Out Loud to talk about how you can visit Ethiopia or join one of our information evenings on Facebook:

Hiking in the Gheralta Mountains is a once in a life-time experience. These mountains are home to some of Ethiopia’s most breath-taking views. Deep sun-soaked valleys, high towering cliffs and beautiful dusty landscapes are just some of the stunning sights you can expect to find.

In the Mountains of Tigray - Rock Hewn Churches of Ethiopia

Tigray Churches are famous for their picturesque location, beautiful history and somewhat difficulty to reach. Whilst some of them are an off-road drive and a 5 minute walk up the stone stairs, others require walking for hours, climbing vertical rock shelves, and an ability to let go of your fear of heights!! We opted for trekking and climbing - we captured it in film and in our Tigray Churches story.

Is the Ark of the Covenant in Ethiopia?

In our visit to Axum in the Tigray Region we visit the Church of our Lady Mary of Zion. We just arrive to witness a big mass with crowds of Christians in white robes.

We are told that inside the Chapel of the Tablet that appears in this video it is kept for centuries the Ark of the Covenant.

According to tradition, the Ark came to Ethiopia with Menelik I after he visited his father King Solomon. Only the guardian monk may see the Ark. The lucky or unlucky monk (it depends how you see it) is appointed for life by his predecessor before his death. The guardian then is confined to the chapel of the Ark of the Covenant for the rest of his life.

Unfortunately we were not allowed to go inside the Chapel to reconfirm that the Ark was there, but then I could not stop myself asking the question:

What was Indiana Jones doing when he was searching for the Ark of the Covenant in Egypt? (movie Raiders of the Lost Ark)

Aksum (Ethiopia) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Aksum in Ethiopia.
Historic Aksum, in northern Ethiopia, was once the capital of a mighty kingdom. On the site of two previous religious buildings, its ancient cathedral was last rebuilt in 1665. Thrones constructed of stone have witnessed the coronation of various monarchs whose Ethiopian Orthodox faith spread far and wide. Aksum is also referred to as Ethiopian Rome, capital of the oldest Christian kingdom in the world, the largest outside the Roman Empire. In the small chapel next to the cathedral a monk is said to protect the Ark Of The Covenant, the true sanctuary of Ethiopia. It is believed to contain the tables of the ten commandments which God sent to Moses. On today's western periphery of Dongur lie the ruins of a relatively modest complex.popularly known as the Palace Of The Queen Of Sheba. The bible states that the legendary Queen of the South visited King Solomon in Jerusalem in order for him to teach her the Jewish faith.Although little remains of the former capital of the Aksumitic kingdom, Ethiopia's holiest site, it continues to be a place of mystery and legend.
