Punch Bowl Falls, Oregon via Eagle Creek Trail

In today’s video, I’ll share the highlights of Punch Bowl Falls, Oregon, and how to get to Punch Bowl Falls in light of the 2018 landslide damage. Punch Bowl Falls is one of the most popular Columbia River Gorge waterfalls.

If you enjoy this video, remember to give it a thumbs-up, and subscribe to our channel for more adventures in the Pacific Northwest.

The hike to Punch Bowl Falls begins from the Eagle Creek trailhead, which is a 45-minute drive east of Portland.

The hike is 4.7 miles altogether, and it’s an out-and-back hike. It follows the main Eagle Creek trail for about two miles before reaching a junction where a smaller trail travels down into the canyon below Punch Bowl Falls. Here is the link to the hike entry on AllTrails so you can find the trail map and the latest trail conditions:

The usually lush Eagle Creek trail with its dramatic waterfalls gets a little dried out by late summer, but that’s when it’s best to hike down into the canyon, where cooler temperatures reign. With a bit of a scramble, you’ll find dripping mossy cliffs and the iconic Punch Bowl Falls.

I’d recommend hiking further on the Eagle Creek trail in the fall or spring when the waterfalls are even fuller. Here is the link to our video on the 12-mile Eagle Creek to Tunnel Falls hike:

♥️ SAY THANKS:

You can’t go wrong with a hike on the Eagle Creek Trail, considered the signature trail of the Columbia River Gorge. Right from the start, the Eagle Creek Trail offers dramatic views of waterfalls, a raging mountain stream, dense PNW forest, and towering basalt cliffs. Most hikers enjoy the short 4.2-mile roundtrip hike to Punchbowl Falls, but I highly recommend going farther if you have the fitness. You can even make it an overnight backpacking trip, ideally hiking to the end of the Eagle Creek Trail at Wahtum Lake, high in the mountains. Whatever option you choose, you can’t go wrong here.

Eagle Creek Trail : Oregon Hiking 4K

One of the most popular trails on the Columbia River Gorge has reopened! After the devastating 50,000 acre 2017 fire that swept the gorge, Eagle Creek Trail has been closed to the public. But after lots of time and patience we are FINALLY back on this spectacular cliff side hike in Oregon.
Just 45 minutes from Portland, this favorite Oregon hike will have you losing count of the dozens of waterfalls, and incredible cliffs!

The Eagle Creek trail is one of Oregon trails must see places! Ranking right along with Mount Hood, Multonomah Fall’s and Crater Lake. And for good reason!

Hitting this trail early I set my sights on reaching “Tunnel Fall’s”. The trails iconic and breathtaking 175 foot waterfall. Just 6 miles from the trail head.
Along the way I stop and share most of the notable features and trail details. Including basalt cliffs, dozens of waterfalls, the dizzying “Vertigo mile”, as well several side adventures. All to wrap up my day taking a swim & climbing over the cliff collapse at the famous Punch Bowl fall’s to share yet another amazing view from its base.

Oregon's Eagle Creek Trail 2021

Kristy McMorlan Photography visits Oregon’s Eagle Creek. The trail was closed after the devastation in 2017 by wildfires. The trail reopened in early 2021 and then closed again from mud and rockslides and reopened in the Summer of the same year. The McMorlans hiked recently on an extremely hot day; the temperature neared 100 degrees! The hike throughout the gorge consists of steep slopes, and cliffs, where the trail was blasted out of rock with cable handrails. While evidence of blackened and burnt trees are all along trail the most significant destruction was the creek bed below Punchbowl Falls. Watch the video and see for yourself.

Eagle Creek Trail - The Best Oregon Hike? | Chris Goes Solo Hiking

Chris Solo Hiked Eagle Creek Falls in Oregon. Just off highway 84 along the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. Definitely one of the top hikes in Oregon, if not the best. Not a super challenging hike, but one full of amazing views and waterfalls all along the way. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time to make it all the way to the Tunnel Falls at the end, which is definitely a highlight of the hike. If you go all the way to Tunnel falls it’s a 12 mile out and back type of hike, but well worth it.

Hiking Eagle Creek after the Fire - Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

Hiking the Eagle Creek trail to Tunnel Falls in November 2021! The trail has been closed since the 2017 Eagle Creek wildfire, and it just opened earlier this year. I was really excited to be able to explore it.

The trail follows a stunning canyon filled with waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge. There are so many waterfalls that they can't really be counted. The wildfire damage to the forest is very evident on the trail, but with so much water around, the moss and understory are coming back well.

The hike becomes very narrow in sections and follows the cliffside closely. There are cables to hold onto in these sections. I found it to be a bit scary!

The section we did is just over 6 miles each way, for a total of 12 - 12.5 miles. It's a very gradual uphill on the way out and a gradual downhill on the way back, so it's a pretty fast 12 miles.

More information on this hike is available on our blog:

Hiking Eagle Creek Trail to Tunnel Falls

Located in Oregon’s spectacular Columbia River Gorge, Tunnel Falls is a stunning waterfall that plunges 130 feet down a sheer, moss-covered rock wall into a beautiful clear basin. The waterfall got its name from the tunnel that was blasted through the rock behind it, allowing hikers to pass behind the roaring waterfall.

Hiking Eagle Creek, From First to Last Waterfall - No Talk, No Music, Just Nature. - 4K Virtual Hike

A virtual walk & hike on Oregon's Eagle Creek Trail to Tunnel Falls, with no talk, no music, no close-up shots of my ugly mug... just nature & relaxation. The full journey in real-time, 4K video.

In the heart of the Columbia River Gorge - a swath of the lush Cascade Range cut in two by Ice Age floods (and a fave weekend getaway for Portlanders) - crystal-clear Eagle Creek rushes down the rainforest-like slopes, carving its own stunning gorge along the way. (A gorge within a gorge, if you will. Gorge-ception!). Truly one of the iconic walks of the PNW.

An astoundingly-built trail traces the creek's many twists, turns, and drops, often on cliffs high above where the path is blasted straight from rock, with narrow tread, steep drops, and a chain handhold to keep you steady. It's all worth it, because the hike also features stately forest, wildflowers, countless waterfalls, and lots and lots of water.

Eagle Creek is also famous as ground zero for an infamous wildfire in 2017 - the area is still recovering, which means many acres of burned trees but also slightly improved views all around.

Our outing goes far beyond where most hikers turn around, past impressive Punchbowl Falls (unfortunately high water prevents a side-trip down for a closer look, but the viewpoint from above is great), High Bridge, roaring Tunnel Falls (which yes, does feature a tunnel), distinctive Twister Falls, before ending at little-visited Sevenmile Falls - the last major cascade on the trail. Enjoy!

Columbia River Gorge: Eagle Creek Trail

Join me on this uniquely beautiful trail, climbing 3.3 dynamic miles up Eagle Creek to High Bridge (6.6 Miles RT). Along the way, you'll see about 6 waterfalls surrounded by stunning moss-covered cliffs, and traverse several narrow sections of cliff-edge trail, dropping 200’ - 300’ to Eagle Creek below, with cables attached to the rock wall for safety. Several sturdy bridges cross streams feeding into the roaring creek. Eagle Creek is a tributary of the Mighty Columbia River and this trail is part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

Our hiking day started out with a stop at the magnificent Multnomah Falls, with a walk up to the falls' overlook bridge, and a stop at the iconic A.E. Doyle-designed Multnomah Lodge for coffee to fuel our hike.

Eagle Creek Trailhead is about a 45 minute drive east along the Columbia River Gorge from Portland, Oregon, and a few miles west of Cascade Locks. Google Maps trailhead location: J3PJ+P6 Cascade Locks, Oregon

Eagle Creek Trail /Cascade Locks , Oregon

The Eagle Creek Trail is a scenic alternative when you are finishing up the Oregon leg of the Pacific Crest Trail. Many thru hikers use this option. It is a very beautiful gorge walk!!

Exploring Oregon's Spectacular Eagle Creek Trail

The Eagle Creek Trail in Oregon is an astonishing hiking destination known for its stunning geography and rich history.

Located in the Columbia River Gorge, the trail winds through a lush, narrow canyon carved by the Eagle Creek, featuring dramatic cliffs and lush greenery.

One of its most iconic features is Tunnel Falls, a captivating 120-foot waterfall that hikers can walk behind through a tunnel carved into the rock.

The trail dates back to the early 1900s when it was constructed as a way to access the heart of the gorge.

Today, it offers hikers a chance to explore the beauty of the Pacific Northwest while immersing themselves in the history and natural wonder of the region, with Tunnel Falls standing out as a highlight of the journey.

Eagle Creek Trail to Punchbowl Falls

Eagle Creek Trail to Punchbowl Falls-
On March 27, 2017 my husband and I were taking a long weekend up at the Columbia Gorge, so we took a hike up the Eagle Creek Trail. The Eagle Creek Trail is used by a lot of Pacific Crest Trail thru-hikers in the summer because Tunnel Falls is a spectacular sight to see. However at mile 3 the trail was washed out by a landslide, so we couldn't continue on to Tunnel Falls. Multiple people die on this trail every year due to the super steep drop offs into the river canyon.
