Monster Swell at Cloud 9 | Big Waves, Only a few surfers out

The first oversized day with the 4 to 6 ft. North at 15 seconds swell peaking with Light winds. The north swell direction and its size makes it sketchy. Set waves push the rights to close out. Clean Up sets blow out further from the normal peak to the channel and all the way towards the adjacent break, quicksilver. Though pleasing to the eyes, you'd think twice paddling out.
Throughout the day, only a few out. Because of the pandemic and economic situation, it would be unwise to break boards these days for Siargao surfers.
Whatever this video is not, It is an ocean appreciation montage.

Gaps Sabuero photographs and films the surf in Siargao Island. His work started getting notice when he got the finals of Redbull Illume Imagequest 2016 with a gopro shot. Since then, his craft became instrumental in the growth of Philippine Surfing.
He has filmed surf and water for award-winning features in the local bigscreen. In 2018, he was named the World Photography Awards National Winner.
Through his Photography and Filmmaking, he has made it a mission to nurture Philippine Surfing.
He is in Siargao Island, if not Surfing, Photographing, Skateboarding, Spearfishing or bathing his filthy Golden Retriever.

Cloud 9, Siargao Island Philippines
Cloud 9 – one of the most well-known waves world wide and one of the best in the Philippines, is a perfect barreling right hand reef break that can be both fun and challenging. Although it is a relatively short wave, the fact that it barrels nearly the whole way guarantees satisfaction.
It breaks on very shallow reef and is not a beginner wave and recommended for advanced surfers only, but in walking distance to Cloud 9 you will find a beginner spot with guides on request.
Cloud Nine is best at mid to high tide. At low tide it is extremely shallow and a high risk of getting hurt or breaking your board. At low tide the biggest part of the reef is dry, surrounding the famous boardwalk and tower, from which you can watch the surfers getting one barrel after another.

Siargao is the surfing capital of the Philippines and the most popular is the Cloud 9 where most of the people do their surfing lessons and even a site for surfing competition. The place draws so much attention from people of all walks of life whether it be local or foreign tourists.
Part of the boardwalk is still under construction since the place was hardly hit by Typhoon Odette (International name Rai).
Moreover, the famous Shaka Siargao is only a few steps away from the boardwalk. We had our breakfast smoothie bowls and it's delicious!

This is the Life Force behind the growing surf tourism machine that is Siargao Island. Multiple times this island in the Philippines was hailed as the numer one in Asia by travel magazines. It has improved local livelihood. Bushes, cocoland and rainforests are replaced with concrete and will not stop rising. Results of tourism are apparent. It steers the behavior of the society and it goes as deep as affecting the local culture and youth. In contrast, the cloud 9 dream was actually what most came here for. This short represents what once was the cloud 9 dream.

Cloud 9 Siargao – The Ultimate Guide
Cloud 9 Siargao is rated as the best surf break in the Philippines and it’s also one of the most popular spots to hang out on Siargao Island. Whether you’re a die-hard surfer or not, a visit to Cloud 9 will definitely make your day, especially around sunrise or sunset.
I have put together this complete guide of Cloud 9 Siargao which includes everything you need to know before you go!
WHERE IS CLOUD 9 SIARGAO?
Cloud 9 is located in General Luna, the southeast corner of Siargao Island in the Philippines.
From Siargao Airport to Cloud 9, it’s approximately a one-hour drive. It’s easy enough to jump in a tuk-tuk directly outside the airport and make the journey to General Luna. The tuk-tuk cost is around 500 pesos total.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT CLOUD NINE SIARGAO
Cloud 9 is home to the ‘Cloud 9 Surfing Cup’, a WSL surf event that occurs every year at the peak of the Siargao surfing season between late September and early October.
Each year, professional surfers from around the world compete against each other on the barreling right-hand wave.
If you happen to be in Siargao around the time of the surfing tournament, you can expect big crowds and lots of parties. If you are not a big surfer and don’t like crowds, this wouldn’t be the best time to visit Siargao.
The best time to surf is on a mid to high tide. It gets very shallow on low tide and the reef beneath the Cloud 9 wave is very sharp and unforgiving.
THINGS TO DO AT CLOUD 9
When I arrived in General Luna, the first thing on my list of things to do was to head straight to the Cloud 9 Siargao boardwalk to watch the sunset. A long wooden pier stretches out across the reef which ends at a 3-story viewing platform that overlooks the Cloud 9 wave, a popular Siargao tourist spot.
There is a white sand beach dotted with palm trees at the beginning of the pier where you can find a number of surf shacks that rent out surfboards. Surfboard rental is 200 pesos per hour or 500 pesos for a full day.
Be aware that Cloud 9 surf is an expert wave and not recommended for beginners. There is a smaller break to the left called ‘Jacking Horse’, perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers.
Looking for something to eat before or after a surf? There is a small cafe on the beach next to the pier called ‘Cafe Loka’ that serves coffee, fresh juices, and salads.
BEST TIME OF DAY TO VISIT
As always, my favorite time of day is at sunrise for the early morning glow and at sunset for that smooth golden hour. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed when experiencing a sunrise or a sunset from the pier.
If you want to avoid surfing in a crowd, the earlier you paddle out to the Cloud 9 wave the better as it’s one of the more popular surf spots.
If you plan to go swimming at the beach or around the pier, it’s best visited on a high tide so there is deep enough water to get submerged in.
