The Norfolk Broads in May - from Richardsons boatyard at Stalham to How Hill #norfolkbroads

Thinking of visiting The Norfolk Broads in 2024 or 2025?

We travel from Richardsons boatyard at Stalham to How Hill in May. Stalham is on the River Ant and we decided to aim for How Hill, as it looked like there were plenty of mooring spaces there.
This is the first in a series of short videos highlighting some of the things to see and do when holidaying on The Norfolk Broads.

#norfolkbroads2024 #leavenotrace

Cruising on The Norfolk Broads is a lovely relaxing holiday (apart from the odd mooring episode, perhaps ???? ) with plenty of time to enjoy the nature around you as well as the comings and goings on the rivers.

The Norfolk Broads, often referred to as Britain's Magical Waterland, is a unique and enchanting network of waterways located in the East of England. Spread across Norfolk and parts of Suffolk, this extensive network encompasses rivers, lakes, and marshes, creating a distinctive landscape that has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike.

Natural Beauty:
The Norfolk Broads boast a diverse and unspoiled natural environment. The waterways meander through picturesque countryside, offering glimpses of reed beds, marshes, and woodlands. The area is renowned for its rich biodiversity, providing a habitat for a variety of bird species, including swans, herons, and kingfishers. The expansive skies of Norfolk add to the beauty, especially during breathtaking sunsets and sunrises.

Water Activities:
One of the primary attractions of the Norfolk Broads is the opportunity for water-based activities. Visitors can explore the region by boat, whether it's a traditional sailboat, a motor cruiser, or a canoe. The calm waters make it an ideal location for boating enthusiasts of all levels. Fishing is also a popular pastime, with the Broads teeming with a variety of fish, providing a serene and contemplative experience for anglers.

Charming Villages:
Scattered along the waterways are charming villages with thatched cottages and historic architecture. Wroxham and Horning are among the bustling villages that offer a taste of local life. Visitors can stroll along waterside paths, explore independent shops, and savor traditional pub fare. The villages contribute to the timeless and tranquil atmosphere that defines the Norfolk Broads.

Wildlife Sanctuaries:
The Broads are home to several wildlife reserves and sanctuaries, providing a haven for rare and protected species. Hickling Broad and Ranworth Broad are notable for their diverse ecosystems and the opportunity to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. Nature lovers can embark on walking trails to appreciate the flora and fauna unique to this region.

Historical Windmills:
Norfolk's iconic windmills add a touch of history to the landscape. Many of these structures have been lovingly preserved and stand as reminders of the region's past reliance on wind power for drainage and milling. Some windmills are open to the public, offering panoramic views of the Broads from their elevated positions.

Relaxation and Tranquility:
The Norfolk Broads provide a peaceful and idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The slow pace of exploration, the rustling reeds, and the gentle lapping of water against boats create an atmosphere of tranquility, making it an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation and a connection with nature.

In summary, the Norfolk Broads present a captivating blend of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and cultural richness. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, history buff, or someone simply looking to unwind in a serene environment, the Norfolk Broads offer a truly magical and unforgettable experience.

Another video of our Easter 2019 week long break. This again was not shot for public viewing so apologies for the commentary, but there seems to be a love of short clips of differing aspects of boating on the Norfolk Broads and as I am an old hand at this type of holiday, anything I can show that allays the fears of those who are speculating a holiday of this type, then I am happy.

On this break we were effectively a fleet of three craft. Friends and family have been bitten by the bug that is a care free and very relaxing holiday...if you just relax and allow it to be. Yes, piloting a boat for the first time is very nerve wracking, and boats DO NOT behave like a car on a road...even though they have a 'steering wheel'. But, as you can see in this short video, two of the boats have been hired by complete novices and here we all are on the very last night and we are all accounted for, and that includes two toddlers, young ones, teens, the younger generation, us older young at heart types...and amazingly, the mother-in-law!!!

Any Richardsons craft is an amazing craft in its own right, but that old adage applies in that you get for what you paid. In this video we were out at Easter, the weather was kind and the boats fully heated when needed. So go on, give it a go and you too can share this spectacular view as you cruise (or sail) south on the River Ant having just boarded your boat at Richardson's of Stalham :)

Is Boating the Norfolk Broads the ultimate UK staycation activity?

Boating in the Norfolk Broads National Park is just one of many things to do in Norfolk, England. On our short by sweet UK staycation, we were pleased we chose this method to see The Broads. We used Richardson's Day Boats which launch from Wroxham, but are one of many companies who offer Norfolk Broads boat rentals. Other options are sailing (which I don't know how to) canoeing, SUP and Kayaking, as well as walking and cycling. We drive our boat along the river Bure to Cockshoot broad, Salhouse Broad, Wroxham Broad, Horning and Malthouse Broad. This was the highlight of our visit to Norfolk, and as an area in the UK whose tourism isn't quite as strong as other places, despite it being the May bank holiday weekend, it was not as crammed with people as I'd have expected from other tourist destinations. I'd highly recommend both the Broads National Park and a Norfolk Staycation to anyone considering it.

A no frills look at the Broadsman A class of boat and particularly, Broadsman 8. It's not about me, as so many boat reviews are, and the boat can be seen in its raw used state...yes, we haven't cleaned it. A great craft so if your looking for a boat that sleeps right and want a little luxury then this is it...and it can get through all the bridges...at times and you can hire this craft direct from Richardson's of Stalham who I thoroughly recommend :)

COMMODORE from Richardsons Boating Holidays of Stalham

First and foremost - PLEASE SUBSCRIBE

The third boat review of Easter 2019 and a personal take of this very popular type of craft as hired by friends of ours. I nearly hired one myself but as an old hand at hiring on the Norfolk Broads, thought better of it. For me, the lack of a rear view when using the main helm was an issue. Yes, there is a flying bridge, but as our friends found, at the start of the week it was way too cold to use it and by the end of the week they were all burnt from the sun...so didn't want to use it as there is no shade.

Another drawback on this type of craft that I failed to mention, it won't go under a number of bridges and therefore you will miss out on some very scenic parts of the Broads. Also, one of the crew became very sea sick although had never experienced this on previous outings on a boat. She discovered that if she stood up in the main saloon she could see out and that prevented the sickness but if she sat down, the windows are so high that she could not see out very well and that kicked off the sea sickness. The lounge was also small and cannot seat and full crew and there is very little work surface in what is a very small kitchen, so preparing food onboard was difficult.

Other than that, the crew had a great holiday and why not...its the Norfolk Broads after all :)

SUNLIT HORIZON from Richardsons of Stalham

First and foremost - PLEASE SUBSCRIBE

A walk around one of the Richardson's hire craft, Sunlit Horizon.

First, some important facts I got wrong in the video. Sunlit Horizon is 38ft long, hence all the room. Sunlit Horizon only sleeps 4...no bed in the saloon, but what a craft she was!

This warts and all personal view of one of Richardson's classic fleet is designed for those who wish to hire her, or those that have and want to see what they're going to get. And in my view, the Sunlit Horizon is value for money and a great craft that sleeps four...and is 38ft long and not the 34ft I state in the video. I hope I do this craft justice, and if you are lucky enough to be holidaying on the Norfolk Broads on Sunlit Horizon, you are sure to have a great time on a great boat. Happy cruising :)

SPRING HORIZON 2 - Boat Review, Norfolk Broads

The production of this video is on no way related to Richardsons Boating Holidays and the opinions expressed are solely my own.

My review of Spring Horizon 2, a Horizon 35 on hire from Richardsons Boating Holidays of Stalham (Norfolk Broads). Spring Horizon 2 is one of four in the class and is a three-berth single deck cruiser (a.k.a. 'bathtub'). At the time of the review, a short break aboard Spring Horizon in early April (Easter school holidays) was £490 including damage waiver and £75 fuel deposit.

Some context: we hired this boat over the Easter school holidays. The weather was dry on all but half a day; this was our first Broads boating holiday since I have suffered from Long Covid. We cruised from Stalham to Coltishall via Stracey Arms on our second day and Malthouse Broad on our fourth day. Our fuel bill was £57 so we were given £18 back.
