BBC's Pop Up team is in Russia. For the past month, they've been travelling across the country filming stories suggested by viewers on social media and by Russians they've come across on their travels. The Altai people - who live in the Altai Republic in southern Siberia - are one of the hundreds of ethnic groups in Russia. They have been part of the region for 300 years. BBC Pop Up went to visit an Altai woman, Baba Tasya, to talk about her work and the Altai relationship with nature. This story was suggested through the #bbcpopup hashtag on Twitter.

In the south of Siberia, where Russia comes together with Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China, lie pristine lands where people try to live in harmony with nature. In this issue of Russian Life we travel to Altai.

The landscape is striking. Taiga, tundra and deserts surround the snowy mountains. This diversity is shaped by the Altai mountain range that stretches for nearly 2,000 kilometres between two climate zones. So all kinds of nature lovers come to Altai, including paragliders.

When I tell people I'm sorry for the lack of decent roads around here, many reply - that's fine, better keep it that way, we're fed up with driving on tarmac, there's nothing wrong with a little walk, explains Vladimir Milov, a paragliding instructor

Some come for trekking and hiking, others for fishing or rafting in the rivers fed by Altai glaciers, for climbing or horse riding.

This pristine Altai nature was cherished as sacred by nomadic peoples who inhabited these lands from ancient times. The local tribes, followers of Shamanism, worshipped spirits they saw in mountains, rivers, trees and everywhere in nature.

Ludmila Menyailova is a guide at the Novotyryshkino Heritage Centre. Altaians have always said that in every living plant there is a spirit, a soul, and for them that was essential, she says.

The locals still preserve some of this reverence. Though several areas are now being turned into huge resorts, most of the region remains untouched by civilisation. The horse is still the usual means of transport on roads which are impassable for most vehicles.

We walked 150km in 7 days and carried all food, cooking equipment and tent. We had to get permission from the military (which is easy to do) as it was close to the Russian and Chinese borders and as we wanted to trek ourselves we had to rent a spot messenger which tracked our GPS points.

Thanks to once again for their offline maps which had most of the route apart from the 3000m valley pass. If you lose the track, which we did many times, just follow the horse and camel shit as it is a popular tourist route generally done with a tour guide with horses, camels etc. Take a satellite image map too as the valley pass is not as clear going from south to north as it is from north to south.

Weather can change instantly and it is important to be prepared. Even in summer, the nights can hit freezing, even at 2000 metres which is where most of the track is at. The wind can be very strong and constant and with rain, your hands can go numb very quickly if you do not have the right protection. We found out the hard way.

Früher lebten in der Region Nomaden. Sie waren Anhänger des Schamanismus und ehrten die Geister, die, so glaubten sie, in den Bergen, den Flüssen und den Bäumen leben. Ludmila Menyailova vom Kulturzentrum erzählt: Die Menschen dieser Region haben immer gesagt, dass in jeder lebendigen Pflanze ein Geist, eine Seele wohnt, für sie war das sehr wichtig.

Die Bewohner heute halten die Traditionen ihrer Vorfahren und die Natur in Ehre. Weite Teile der Region sind unberührt. Das Wort Altai bedeutet Gold in der Sprache der Mongolen. Im Gebirge sind viele Wege schwer zugänglich und die Menschen müssen umsatteln.

Die zahlreichen Höhlen zeugen von der archäologischen Geschichte der Region. Hier fanden einst die Menschen Schutz. Doch nicht sie, sondern die Naturkräfte haben diese Höhlen erschaffen.

A month ago, the largest expedition to the regions of Kazakhstan - #ulydalatravel came to its end. The expedition covered 6 routes from July 18 to September 29, 2018. The expedition participants got over more than 17,000 kilometers, visited 11 regions of Kazakhstan, 12 national nature parks and more than 130 travel locations.

Over 150 people participated in the exhibition, including professional guides, experienced travellers, journalists, travel bloggers, deputies, media personalities, the crew of Kazakh TV channel and the team of National Geographic Russia. As a result, new travel routes were formed, a photo and video bank about the country's natural objects was created, and information about their condition was updated.

Lake Teletskoye (Russian: Телецкое озеро, lit. 'the lake of the Tyolyos [ru]'; Altay: Алтын Кӧл, romanized: Altyn Köl, lit. 'Golden Lake') is the largest lake in the Altai Mountains and the Altai Republic, Russia, and has depth up to 325 meters.
Situated at a height of 434 m above the sea level, the lake is 78 km long and 5 km wide and lies between the mountain ridges Korbu and Al-tyntu, on the junction of the Sailughem Mountains and the Western Sayans. Its surface area is 233 km2. Annual water level fluctuations are estimated at some 348 sm. The lake transparency is high, with the visibility of the lake water ranging from six to fourteen meters.
About 70 rivers and 150 temporary streams flow into the lake, the largest of them, Chulyshman River, supplying more than half of the lake's water. The lake is drained through a single outlet, the Biya River, which, after its confluence with the Katun River, forms one of Siberia's largest rivers, the Ob River.
The lake is surrounded by mountains of 600-1,300 m in the northern part and about 1,700–2,400 m (5,600–7,900 ft) in the southern part. Lake Teletskoe is included into Altaisky Nature Reserve. That reserve along with the Katun Nature Reserve and the Ukok Plateau Nature Refuge were listed as one of UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites under the name Golden Mountains of Altai
The Altai people have a legend about the name of the lake in their language, which means Golden Lake. According to this story, once, a rich man had an ingot of gold, which he wanted to use to buy food. He travelled around Altai, but could not find anyone who would sell him any food. Eventually, he threw the gold into the lake. This legend is the origin of the name.

The Altai Republic is a land of mountains, glaciers, lakes and waterfalls. Here you can find the republic's highest peak (and also the highest point in Siberia) - Mount Belukha (4,506 m). The glaciers near this mountain form the Katun River, which further away merges with the Biya River creating another river - the Ob. The Ob is a major river in western Russia and the world's seventh-longest river. There are many other great places and mountain ranges like Katun Nature Reserve, Kuray mountain range, Severo-Chuyskiy and Yuzhno-Chuyskiy mountain ranges, which strike with their beauty and attract lots of climbers. Also fans of rafting might be interested in seeing epic stormy mountains rivers such as Chuya, Katun, Argut, Chulyshman and Bashkaus.
