ACATENANGO VOLCANO HIKE in Antigua Guatemala with OX Expeditions

In 2018, Acatenango Volcano in Antigua, Guatemala killed hundreds of people.

Today, we're doing the Acatenango volcano hike to see it ourselves.

I'm not sure I accurately captured how insanely difficult this hike was. I quit at least 4-5 times on the way up. For the first hour or two, you are on a constant hike up in sand deeper than your ankles carrying a pack that's 30-40 pounds.

When I say (many times) that it was the most physically challenging thing I've ever done, I mean it.

But it's worth it. If you do this hike and decide, like me, that you want to quit, I hope you also do what I did and continue.

As you'll see in this video, you're going to be treated to some of the most incredible sights you'll ever see.

Oh, and forget about sleeping. Volcan Acatenango will keep you awake all night! ????

Want to do the Volcan Acatenango Guatemala hike yourself? You can get it cheaper with other companies, but I highly suggest you do it with OX Expeditions. The equipment they provide is excellent, the guides are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, and the food is great!

This experience is definitely one of the best things to do in Antigua, Guatemala!

Most Pro ACATENANGO Volcano Overnight Tour!

The Acatenango Overnight Hike is such a special adventure and currently Antigua, Guatemala’s most popular among travelers. Volcan Acatenango is the beautiful beast that started it all for OX back in 2004. With an elevation of 3976 meters it is the third highest volcano in Central America. This epic hike takes you to the summit of the most beautiful volcano in Guatemala with incredible views of the active Fuego volcano.
We climb this volcano more than all our competition combined, rain or shine. Our professional guide team and organized procedures work hard to manage the unpredictable chaos of mother nature to provide a high quality experience. It’s all about the details. We want each and every client to have an enjoyable time no matter where the adventure takes us. Another thing that sets us apart is we really care about the environment. Call us traditional but we pride ourselves on leaving no trace; we take all our gear up and bring everything back down. Hiking this way we protect the fragile volcanic ecosystem that we love so much.

ACATENANGO OVERNIGHT HIKE : TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
Without a doubt the most epic part of this adventure camping experience is watching the Fuego Volcano erupt with lava and a boom right below your campsite.

ACATENANGO: WHAT TO KNOW. TRIP PREPARATION

In an effort to help you achieve your adventure goals, the Pro-Team at OX execute a Pre-Trip Meeting at our office the night before your climb of the Acatenango volcano.

This video is a summary of that meeting. It is not a replacement. We strongly recommend your attendance at the OX Pre-Trip Meeting.

The Problem with Volcan Acatenango is that it can be very challenging, especially for those with little to no experience with this sort of hiking / camping adventure. The hike begins at the trailhead which is roughly 2400 m / 8,000ft. The summit is 3976 m / 13,044 ft.

Issues such as physical exhaustion, dehydration, altitude sickness, hypothermia and more are some of the problems we strive to avoid due to proper preparation.

This video is meant as supplemental information and review of this meeting. We strongly suggest you attend the meeting so you can ask questions in person to your Professional OX Guide and arrive in the morning prepared.

For those of you who have missed our Pre-Trip Meeting, please reference this video to help you in your preparation and be sure to arrive early at our office so that you can meet your guide and get any additional gear and information you might need for the trek up the volcano.

We go above and beyond to ensure your overall experience is the best it can be for this once in a lifetime climb.

Please help us help you by attending this meeting.

ACATENANGO Volcano day-trip Volcano Tour: OX (5 to 5 Guatemala volcano)

A detailed break-down of what you need to know and more important, what to bring on the Acatenango Day Trip. Your climb will begin early in the morning so we have the best chance of views from the summit before the clouds rush in.

I ALMOST DIDN’T MAKE IT… HIKING VOLCANO ACATENANGO, GUATEMALA! (FULL TOUR & TIPS)

If you’re traveling Guatemala and are looking for things to do in Guatemala and are up for a heart pumping adventure hiking up Volcán Acatenango is a great option. Volcano Acatenango is located around an hour from Antigua and starts at an elevation of 2,400 m. In this Guatemala Travel Vlog I will take you through my entire experience of hiking Volcan Acatenango, all the ups and the downs, literally! After a 5 hour hike straight up we reach base camp which is located at 3,600 meters. It’s here where we rest, take in the views of Volcán Fuego and sleep for the night before ascending to the peak of Acatenango for sunrise, 3,976 m (13,044 feet). This hike was the hardest physical activity I have ever completed and I will be honest there were many times I wanted to turn back around but knowing you were there with me kept me going! I hope this Acatenango Guatemala video helps you out when you’re planning your trip to Guatemala! #guatemala #acatenango

FUEGO Overnight Volcano tour: (OX Expeditions)

This overnight volcano tour on Volcan Fuego (Fire Volcano)is a guide favorite because of the technical trail that takes you through beautiful high-alpine meadows washed with flowers and breath taking views! This hike is technical because of the challenging trail characteristics, and thrilling because you commune with an angry-active volcano, while camping in the saddle between Volcan Fuego and the looming Volcan Acatenango. This is an exhilarating trip that is not to be missed. Few folks can say they actually hiked on Fuego, you can be one of the lucky few.

We Hiked a Volcano! Was the Acatenango Hike Worth It? | Sunrise Summit | Guatemala Travel Guide

The overnight Acatenango volcano hike was one of the main reasons we wanted to come to Guatemala. Climbing the third highest volcano in Central America at sunrise and looking out over other volcanoes that make up the Pacific Ring of Fire bathed in golden light was a moment neither of us will ever forget.

After doing lots of research on the best tour operators, we are so glad we went with Wicho & Charlie's for several reasons:
1) We felt well looked after throughout the whole hiking experience. They provide high-quality kit that is either included (e.g. windbreakers, hats, gloves, fleeces, water bottles) or for hire (e.g. backpacks, hiking poles). Their instructions were comprehensive and the guides were lovely.
2) From what we could see, they are one of the only companies (if not the only) whose base camp is made of actual solid structure cabins. These are not only warmer, more comfortable, and better protected from the strong winds at the top of the volcano, but also safer in the case of an eruption from Fuego.
3) We also loved their commitment to giving back to communities and protecting animals and the environment. All meals were delicious, nutritious and plant-based. They do not use any single-use plastics and other pollutants. They train and upskill the local guides with English lessons, first-aid training, etc. They also support Santuario Vida Animal shelter by paying the salary of a working to help out at the shelter and also with 2,000 to 4,000 pounds of food.
4) With all your snacks and food, they also provide you with dog food to bring up for the dogs who live on Acatenagno (if you want to!)

Antigua, Guatemala
Only about 650 meters distance BUT it ain't easy.

WIN a FREE t-shirt or your entire TRIP for FREE!
Yeah, all you have to do is run the crater rim of Volcan Acatenango. The rules are simple, start from point A of the circle, you choose which ever direction you want and run. You must keep moving. If you stop to a walk, drop to the ground unconscious, stand still or otherwise stop moving at any point, you forfeit and must try again from the start. If you complete the crater run (back to point A) without stopping, you win a FREE t-shirt announcing to the world you completed the CRATER RUN CHALLENGE. Sounds easy right? The only catch is you have about 40% less oxygen than at sea level. The run takes place at around 13,000ft / 4,000m!!

FREE TRIP! if you set the record time for the year. Every January 1st and July 1st we re-set the clock so everyone has a chance to set the new record. This means your Acatenango trip for FREE and a T-shirt that states, I set the record.

Climbing Acatenango and Volcán de Fuego during a hailstorm | Guatemala | Episode 5

In this episode, I embark on the overnight Acatenango Trek. Arguably the most renowned trek in Central America, the Acatenango Trek is a unique experience where you get to sleep alongside two active volcanoes.
