Castles and fortresses in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Originally made of earth and wood, later castles were built of stone, so many still survive today. Spanning a period of 900 years during the middle ages, castles come in many styles of architecture and design. Despite their differences though, they all have one feature in common-- they are fortified. Castles are defensive structures specifically built to withstand attack in the medieval world. Technologies such as arrowslits, murder-holes, and moats further improved their capabilities. Castles finally fell out of favor with the advent of gun powder, as offensive technologies, such as canons, rendered castles largely obsolete.

Ostrazac Castle| Cazin| Bosnia Herzegovina| Serbia @JourneyistGlobal

Ostrožac Castle (Bosnian) is a castle located in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Una-Sana Canton just outside the town of Cazin, in the village of Ostrožac. The castle dates back to the 13th century when Ostrožac was part of property of the noble house of Babonić family. In 1592 it was captured by the Ottoman Turks and established as an Ottoman province of Bosnia. The castle was built between 1900 and 1906 by Major of Bihać Lothar Von Berks as a birthday present for his wife, member of the Habsburg family.
The castle hosts a 55-year old event known under the name Colony of sculptors Ostrožac. This event produced number of monumental sculptures carved in bihacite stone, of which more than 150 is left in the castle courtyard as a permanent exhibition, forming the open-air Sculpture Park Ostrožac, unique in Southeastern Europe. According to the decision of the Commission for National Monuments, the sculptures are an integral and inalienable part of the architectural ensemble as a wider monument. Tourism and civic organizations of Cazin and Ostrožac use the castle grounds for shows, concerts, performances and variety of events. For the time being, the castle complex is being repaired at slow pace and only most urgent repairs have been done, although comprehensive plans for restoration of entire complex exists

Sapna - Heroic town located in north eastern part of Bosnia

Sapna is a heroic town in north eastern part of Bosnia, located on south eastern slopes of Majevica.
During the aggression against BiH, part of the then municipality of Zvornik, i.e. today's municipality of Sapna, was organized in a very efficient manner and survived as a free territory.
Two of Bosnian hero's died in this part of Bosnia.
Hajrudin Mesic was a member of the Patriotic League, organizer and leader of the resistance to the aggressor in northeastern Bosnia. He died on October 30, 1992 in Nezuk near Sapna, in the action of establishing a corridor towards Srebrenica.
Mehdin Hodzic was popularly known as Captain Senad and Black Swan. He died on May 10, 1992 in the village of Zaseok in Sapna, where thanks to him one of the first victories of the future RBiH Army over the aggressor forces was won. In that action, Captain Senad and his comrades captured the first tank and a self-propelled gun for the BiH Army.

It is known that people have lived in the area of Sapna since ancient times. Sapna as an administrative-territorial term is mentioned as early as the Middle Ages.
Evidence of the active life of people in the Sapna area is the numerous stecci that are still found today in the settlements: Handjelica, Međeđa, Gornja Sapna, etc. In the Middle Ages, Sapna represented an important communication area between the then cities of Zvornik and Teocak. With the arrival of the Ottomans in these areas, Sapna was mentioned as the nahija of Sapna, which belongs to the Zvornik sandžak, which was founded in period between 1478 and 1483. years.

Zelengora, Kozje strane - Bosna i Hercegovina - Hiking Tours | Go Bosnia & Herzegovina [4K]

Hiking Tours (Episode 14): Zelengora: Storm at the summit of Kozje strane;

Zelengora is certainly one of the most beautiful Dinaric mountains. It is located in the National Park Sutjeska and its highest peak is Bregoč with a height of 2014 meters above sea level. The goal of our ascent was only 1 meter lower and also the second-highest peak of Zelengora, Kozje strane [2013 m asl].

During the ascent, we were followed by stormy weather with heavy rain, thick fog, and very strong winds. Zelengora, although essentially a very gentle and tame mountain, showed us its wild side and made it clear that regardless of its mild grassy fields, it can be very dangerous if underestimated.

...

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a beautiful country with enchanting nature that will leave you a lot of priceless memories if you indulge. This heart-shaped country is located in the heart of the Dinarides, on the beautiful Balkans. Rivers, lakes, fields, and mountains are just a small part of what this country has to offer. Our goal is to tell and document the most beautiful stories of this country, the heart-shaped Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Planinarske ture (Epizoda 14): Zelengora: Oluja an vrhu Kozje strane;

Blagaj Tekija - Bosnia's beautiful Dervish Monastery under a cliff

Blagaj Tekija is a Dervish monastery outside Mostar, Bosnia, that’s nearly 600 years old. Situated at the base of a cliff, next to the source of the river Buna, it’s a unique and picturesque series of buildings that looks even better in person than it does in pictures.

The Tekija (or Tekke) was first founded during the height of the Ottoman empire. Time and rock slides have led to extensive repairs and reconstruction to the buildings. Today, thanks largely to a Turkish travel agency, the Tekke looks mostly as it did in the past.

About Bosnia and Herzegovina: Bosnia and Herzegovina (Bosna i Hercegovina / Босна и Херцеговина, pronounced bôsna i xěrtseɡoʋina), abbreviated BiH or B&H, sometimes called Bosnia–Herzegovina and often known informally as Bosnia, is a country at the crossroads of south and southeast Europe, located in the Balkans. The capital and largest city is Sarajevo. Bosnia and Herzegovina borders Serbia to the east, Montenegro to the southeast, and Croatia to the north and southwest. In the south it has a 24 kilometres (15 miles) long coast, exiting on the Adriatic Sea within the Mediterranean, around the town of Neum. Bosnia, which is the inland region of the country, has a moderate continental climate with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. In the central and eastern regions of the country, the geography is mountainous, in the northwest it is moderately hilly, and in the northeast it is predominantly flat. Herzegovina, which is the smaller, southern region of the country, has a Mediterranean climate and is mostly mountainous. The area that is now Bosnia and Herzegovina has been inhabited by human beings since at least the Upper Paleolithic, but evidence suggests that during the Neolithic age, permanent human settlements were established, including those that belonged to the Butmir, Kakanj, and Vučedol cultures. After the arrival of the first Indo-Europeans, the area was populated by several Illyrian and Celtic civilizations. Culturally, politically, and socially, the country has a rich and complex history. The ancestors of the South Slavic peoples that populate the area today arrived during the 6th through the 9th century. In the 12th century, the Banate of Bosnia was established; by the 14th century, this had evolved into the Kingdom of Bosnia. In the mid-15th century, it was annexed into the Ottoman Empire, under whose rule it remained until the late 19th century. The Ottomans brought Islam to the region, and altered much of the countrys cultural and social outlook. [Source: wikipedia // Google]

Kučlat or Kušlat a medieval town (fortress), a square (in the suburbs) and a customs house. The fortress is located south of Zvornik, on about a hundred meters high vertical rock above the mouth of the Jadra in Drinjač. The fortress belonged to the royal domain in the parish of Trebotić. It has been mentioned since 1346.

From 1404, Kučlat was in the hands of Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić, and from 1410, by agreement, in the hands of the Hungarian ruler Sigismund of Luxembourg. Since 1411, it has been in the hands of the despot Stefan Lazarevic. It came under Ottoman rule after the fall of the Serbian despotism in 1459. The tradition of the transition to Ottoman rule is transmitted by Evlija Celebija, who states that this city was built by the Serbian prince Radovan and that Sultan Fatih could not conquer it, but forced it to surrender with a siege. In the Ottoman era, Kučlat was a nahija that belonged to the Zvornik Sandžak.

Kušlat mosque was built inside the old fort. It was intended for the needs of the crew of the Ottoman army. The famous travel writer Evlija Çelebi said that it is Ebul Fethova, which means that it was built in the 15th century, during the reign of Sultan Mehmed II el-Fatih, when the Ottomans conquered Bosnia. The Kušlat Mosque is considered the oldest military mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
