China's Unsung Cities
We’ve all seen images of Chinese megacities- but what about China’s lesser-known, inland cities – the ones you DON’T hear about? What’s it like to live in one of them? They’re gritty, functional, and utterly chaotic and unregulated. A bit like the American Wild West. Too busy to be beautiful. Donkey carts have long since been replaced by trucks, and consumers are transitioning from motorbikes to cars.
Sidewalks double as vegetable gardens. Even fancy houses would rather grow cabbages than grass. In fact, every square inch of land is put to use. They may live in apartments but they’re still farmers, heart and soul, and can’t bear to waste a single inch of soil. Common areas double as grazing land.
Just two blocks from those busy thoroughfares you’ll step straight back into traditional China. Neighborhoods filled with people who work hard, and don’t complain. Restaurants where you know exactly what you’re getting - no hidden kitchens or artificial ingredients. You can even watch your vegetables get rinsed.
Supermarkets and big box stores are few and far between but there’s an outdoor market - and it doesn’t get any fresher than this. Especially if you don’t mind raising your own meals. Most locals don’t have cars, but you can get almost anywhere by minibus. The destination is on the windshield. For longer trips, there’s a full-sized bus.
Not much happens after dark, though you can always grab a bite at a local street stand.
Even here, China is in the middle of a breathtaking transformation. Everyone’s determined to reach the government’s goal of “moderate prosperity.” They’re renovating the Old Town for the hoped-for tourist hordes. Modern shops are popping up everywhere, filled with must-have items that people didn’t even know existed ten years ago.
Even if they’re not entirely sure what a modern China is supposed to look like, they’re not stopping until they figure it out.

New Tile House Hakka Cultural District
The New Tile House Hakka Cultural District is neither new, nor a single house, but rather a cluster of single-story buildings made of bricks (some fired, some mud) and tiles. Not much happens here on weekdays, but visit on a weekend and you might see cultural groups presenting music or dance performances.

Old Hsinchu Prefectural Hall
Unlike similar official buildings in Tainan and Taichung, the Old Hsinchu Prefectural Hall continues to play a key role in local government, and is where the city’s mayor has his office.

Hsinchu City Fire Museum
The museum, inside a functioning fire station, contains bilingual displays that cover both the history of the local firefighting service and how best to survive a conflagration.

Shi Family Fish Balls
Located southwest of Hsinchu Railway Station, this restaurant has been praised by hundreds of netizens. It's an old-school eatery: There’s no English sign or menu, and not one dollar has been wasted on fancying up the décor.

Zhulian Temple
This hall of worship is at the Buddhist end of the theological spectrum, but you’ll also see traditional folk practices. One is the casting of pairs of crescent-shaped wood blocks known to Taiwanese-speakers as poe.

Qiding Station
There's no staff at this station, nor vending machines from which you can buy tickets. Hsinchu to Qiding is NT$21.
Landscape Platform
It takes just a few minutes to get from the station to the platform. Gazing out over the Taiwan Strait, as the wind turbines that dot this stretch of coast slowly rotated and the occasional express train rumbled past, was a soothing experience.
Zimu Tunnel
When this railway line was double-tracked in the early 1970s, it was moved slightly closer to the sea because the tunnels (there are actually two) were too narrow. Exemplars of the solid infrastructure built during the 1895-1945 Japanese colonial period, they're now preserved as part of a walkway/bike trail. The first tunnel is 67m long, the second nearly double that. No flashlights are needed; there's enough natural light for you to see where you're walking.
Xiangshan Station
The lovingly maintained station building in Xiangshan is an attraction in its own right. Dating from 1928, it’s the only remaining Japanese-era railway stop in Taiwan that was built using cypress from the Alishan area in the central mountains.
Xiangshan Tianhou Temple
The current building dates from the 1920s, but there’s been a shrine on this site since sometime in the late 17th century, when Han Chinese from Fujian (the mainland China province closest to Taiwan) began to settle on the coast here. Like the majority of Taiwan’s folk shrines, this temple houses effigies of several deities, but the principal object of veneration is Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea.

Cattleya Irene Teo Lai Kheng - Used in Citrus 12 (Men) for Team building Perfume workshop
Cattleya Irene Teo Lai Kheng is an orchid hybrid originated by Woon Leng Nurs. in 2014. It is a cross of C. Aloha Case x C. coccinea. Very compact plants producing 2-4 flowers that are about 3 1/2 in size on each new growth. Most will be red to very deep purple with the lip also being in similar colours but with a yellow throat. Fragrant and good looking flowers.

Bulbophyllum affine
Chinese name: Chichunshidou Lan (red lip stone bean orchid), Gaoshifodou Lan (Gaoshifo bean orchid), Wenxing Lan (stripe star orchid)
Widely distributed from the Ryukyu Islands of Japan through China, Indochina, Thailand and Myanmar to the foothills of the Himalayas. In Taiwan, the entire plant is used as a tonic, antipyretic, to reduce phlegm, and to stop bleeding .
Oberonia ensiformis (Sm.) Lindl. Syn. O. iridifolia Lindl.
Chinese name: Jianyeyuanweilan
Chinese medicinal name: Shubianzhu
Flowering season is September to November in China, October in Tamil Nadu, October to December at Palnis Hills, or November in much of India (Sikkim, Orissa, Western Ghats).
Herbal Usage: It is used to encourage diuresis, improve blood circulation and to treat cystitis, urethritis, injuries and fractures.
Goodyera henryi Rolfe
Chinese name: Guangebanye Lan (Naked bud spotted leaf orchid)
It has a long, creeping rhizome which terminates in a 10- to 15-cm-tall, erect stem.
Herbal Usage: The whole plant is used to promote blood flow, and to treat snake bite, dysentery and lymphatic tuberculosis in Chinese herbal medicine.
Herminium lanceum (Thunb. ex Sw.) Vuijk
Chinese names: Shuangchunjiaopan Lan (two lips, angle plate orchid), Shuangshencao (two kidney grass), Chachunjiaopan Lan
Chinese medicinal name: Yaozicao
It is a terrestrial herb, thriving among grasses in forests, thickets and grassy slopes, and among rocks at 1100–3500 m. It flowers from June to August or September in mainland China, April to September in Taiwan, July to August in Sikkim, July to October in Bhutan and June to August in Nepal. Herb is obtained from Shandong to Tibet and from Dongbei (Northeast China, Manchuria) to Guangxi and Taiwan.
Herbal Usage: The root is said to benefit the lung; it is used to treat tuberculosis. It also benefits the kidney, strengthens the muscles and bones and stops bleeding. The decoction is prepared with 6–15 g of the herb. In India, it enjoys usage as a nutrient or a tonic.
Pinalia graminifolia (Lindl.) Kuntze Syn. Eria graminifolia Lindl.
Chinese name: Heyemao Lan (grainy leaf wooly orchid), Heyiping Lan
Medicinal name: Heyemohu (grainy leaf black epiphyte)
It is robust orchid which grows in large communities found in central and eastern Himalayas at 2000–3320 m, Myanmar, Tibet and Yunnan.
Usage: The whole plant is used as a tonic. It helps digestion. A decoction is prepared with 3–9 g of the orchid. It is used to nourish the stomach, promote the production of body fluids, and to treat hot flushes, fever, sweating, malaise and anorexia.
