Places to see in ( Pontypool - UK )

Places to see in ( Pontypool - UK )

Pontypool is a town that is home to approximately 36,000 people in the county borough of Torfaen, within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire in South Wales. It is situated on the Afon Lwyd river in the county borough of Torfaen. Situated on the eastern edge of the South Wales coalfields, Pontypool grew around industries including iron and steel production, coal mining and the growth of the railways. A rather artistic manufacturing industry which also flourished here alongside heavy industry was Japanning, a type of lacquer ware.

Pontypool itself consists of several smaller districts, these include Abersychan, Cwmffrwdoer, Pontnewynydd, Trevethin, Penygarn, Wainfelin, Tranch, Brynwern, Pontymoile, Blaendare, Cwmynyscoy, New Inn, Griffithstown and Sebastopol.

Pontypool has a notable history as one of the earliest industrial towns in Wales. The town and its immediate surroundings were home to significant industrial and technological innovations, with links to the iron industry dating back to the early fifteenth century when a bloomery furnace was established at Pontymoile. During the sixteenth century, largely due to the influence of the Hanbury family, the area developed its association with the iron industry and continued to consolidate its position in the seventeenth century, when the development of the town began in earnest. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the metallurgical and extractive industries of the area, along with the development of the canals and railways, provided the impetus to the expansion of Pontypool and its surrounding villages and communities.

The construction of the Monmouthshire Canal during the 1790s connected Pontnewynydd to Newport and later connected with the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal at Pontymoile in 1812. Tramroads leading from industrial areas within an eight-mile radius of the canal converged at either Pontnewynydd or Pontymoile.

The tramroads and canals were superseded by the railways in the mid-nineteenth century. From 1845, work commenced on establishing a railway from Pontypool to Newport. The line opened to passengers in 1852 and connected with Blaenavon in 1854. It eventually came under the management of the Great Western Railway. Another line was constructed during the 1860s and 1870s to connect Pontypool with Newport via Caerleon. Connections were also made with Abergavenny, Hereford and the Taff Vale. Pontypool had three railway stations, namely Crane Street, Clarence Street and Pontypool Road. Line closures during the 1960s greatly reduced the valley's railway connections, which were replaced by modern roads. The only passenger line still operating within Pontypool is at an unmanned station in New Inn. Pontypool & New Inn station is on the Welsh Marches Line with trains provided by Arriva Trains Wales.

Pontypool is well known for its extensive park. Pontypool Park was the historic seat of the Hanbury family, who developed a permanent residence in Pontypool in c. 1694 and, under the direction of Major John Hanbury, subsequently established a deer park in the early 1700s. The park became a venue for recreation and enjoyment for the Hanbury family and their associates.

( Pontypool - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Pontypool . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Pontypool - UK

ANOTHER WILDCAMP UP OVER THE BORDER, A NICE WALK THROUGHT HE VILLAGE UP INTO THE HILLS, PICKING FRUIT ALONG THE WAY, PEACE AND QUIET UNTIL I MET THE MOB.. I SAW THE COWS AND REALISED ID HAVE TO GO THROUGH THEM TO REACH MY DESTINATION, SO I DID. THEY CAME OVER TO ME TO INVESTIGATE AS THEY DO. NOW TO REMAIN CALM IS ESSENTIAL, MAKE YOURSELF BIG TO THEM IF THEY COME TOO CLOSE AND MOST OF ALL DONT PANIC, ITS RARE FOR PEOPLE TO GET HURT OR TRAMPLED IN OPEN SPACES. BEST AVOIDED OF COURSE BUT HOPEFULLY MY ACTIONS CAN DEMONSTRATE HOW TO COPE, AFTER THAT I GOT SET UP AND SETTLED IN, WEATHER WAS KIND ENOUGH TO HOLD OFF UNTIL THE TENT WAS UP.. THEN IT TURNED ENJOYABLE CAMP AND FULL OF INCIDENT. HERES TO THE NEXT ONE.

UK Mountain Tarn Wild Camping with Andy Wardle in STRONG WINDS & 4 Season Tents

UK Mountain Tarn Wild Camping with Andy Wardle in STRONG WINDS & 4 Season Tents

I team up with Andy Wardle for a collaboration wild camp. We head to the Western Fells of the Lake District National park to an idyllic mountain tarn. A few (hundred) beers in hand, we hike to the summit with ridiculously heavy packs and find a place to pitch the tents. Lots of rain over the last few days meant suitable pitches were few and far between. A group advised us there were no suitable places to put the tents, but experience prevailed and we soon found the only suitable pitch and had the spot all to ourselves.

Andy camped in the Hilleberg Soulo Black Label and I used the Tarptent Scarp 1. The winds were wild and gusting throughout the night but the tents are designed to withstand much worse conditions, so proved to be the trusty shelters that they're renowned for.

We swapped tales of the outdoors, life and shared many beers together. Andy also enjoyed the opportunity to answer some questions which some viewers had kindly submitted, so thanks for that.

A top night out with a great bloke and fellow wild camping enthusiast!

Visiting the Biggest Town in the UK - Reading, UK Travel Vlog

We first wandered around the Abbey Ruins which was one of Europe's largest royal monasteries. We discovered the history of the Abbey then went through Forbury Gardens. Forbury Gardens is a huge green space in the centre of town which is home to the Maiwand Lion. After that we passed by the Abbey Gateway. The Gateway used to be part of the Reading Ladies Boarding School which was famously attended by Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra. We then went to Reading museum admission is free here. The museum houses a few artefacts found in Reading and a copy of the Bayeux Tapestry. We had a quick buffet at the House of Flavours, an Indian restaurant which we definitely recommend. We then went to the Madejski Stadium (currently named the Select Car Leasing Stadium for sponsorship reasons) which is home to Reading Football Club. We watched Chelsea FC win the Women's Super League Title. Then, we finished our day by going to the Oracle shopping centre and bought some boba tea from Bubbleology.

We hope you enjoy our Reading vlog.

New Build Baldwin Loco Lyn for The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway

The 762 Club - a registered charity - has been formed to construct, own and maintain a replacement Baldwin 2-4-2 - also named LYN of course - for operation on the renascent Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. This is your chance to become member of the club to build the new locomotive and to ensure that LYN is completed in as short a time as possible - less than three years! The resurgent Lynton & Barnstaple Railway intends to increase the length of line and services, to reconstruct most of the original railway, linking Lynton to Barnstaple again. As part of this the Railway needs to obtain appropriate locomotives and rolling stock. LYN is the most suitable of the original locomotives for the line in the short to medium term, being efficient, flexible and comfortable - very necessary given the exposed location of the railway. Planning for the design and construction of the new Baldwin has been progressing steadily using original drawings and details with the inclusion of modern requirements. The intention is to complete construction by 2012 - and earlier if possible. We are building a new locomotive which will have all the appearance of the original - in the condition that it returned from a rebuild at Eastleigh works in 1929. However, we are intending to provide an efficient, easy-to-maintain and powerful engine that is fit for very many years service in the 21st Century. So, for example, there will be roller bearings for the wheels, coupling and connecting rods, higher boiler pressure, welded tanks (with dummy rivets!) and various other improvements. In this way, we will put the LYN back into the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. At its opening in May 1898, the legendary narrow-gauge Lynton & Barnstaple Railway in North Devon was equipped with three Manning Wardle 2-6-2 tank engines. Two months later they were joined by a Baldwin 2-4-2 and all four locomotives were named after three-letter Devon rivers. The Baldwin was named 'LYN' but was commonly referred to by the staff as 'the Yankee'. When the Southern Railway took over the line in 1923, they also gave LYN a number: E (For Eastleigh - the Southern shed Pilton was attached to) 762. The original LYN was built to a unique design, ordered and delivered in a very short time by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia and worked on the line until closure. After the auction sale it was reduced to scrap very quickly with only the nameplates surviving. Despite a few teething problems, LYN was a popular and distinctive engine that was also the most powerful on the line - on occasion pulling five-coach trains, one more than normally allowed. Please note that I am not connected to this project in anyway and so this is an unofficial video. However, I am a keen supporter (financially) of this project and as the 762 Club do not have any promotional video on YouTube, felt I would contribute by producing this in hope it may help with the new build project.
