A Trip To Muir Woods | San Francisco

This week we are extremely excited to bring you to Muir Woods National Monument. We were very excited as we've never seen giant redwoods before and wanted to see them in person. And we can tell you, they are massive and beautiful.

Muir Woods National Monument is a park located about a 30-minutes drive north of San Francisco. It is part of California's Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It is known for its towering old-growth redwood trees. A numerous number of trails wind among the trees. There are different difficulties to some of the trails so be sure to research which trail you should take.

This attraction is a must-see for anyone looking to get up close and personal with some of California's most famous topography, as well as a break from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco's city center.

San Anselmo, California

San Anselmo (Spanish for 'Saint Anselm') is an incorporated town in Marin County, California, United States. San Anselmo is located 1.5 miles west of San Rafael, at an elevation of 46 feet .It is located about 20 miles north of San Francisco. The town is bordered by San Rafael to the east, Fairfax to the west, and Ross to the south. Mount Tamalpais dominates the view to the south. The population was 12,830 at the 2020 census.

The land in and around San Anselmo was mostly pastoral until 1874, when the North Pacific Coast Railroad (NPC) added to its line a spur track from San Anselmo to San Rafael. In 1875, the railroad completed a line from Sausalito to Tomales and north to Cazadero via San Anselmo. For a few years, the town was referred to on railroad maps as Junction, but in 1883 the name San Anselmo came back into use. The San Anselmo post office opened in 1892. Two postal substations were operated: Lansdale, from 1924 to 1962, and Yolanda, from 1924 to 1954.

The San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo
From 1902 until the early 1940s, San Anselmo was part of Marin's Northwestern Pacific (in 1907, investors formed the NWP) Electric Train system. The Miracle Mile's and Center Boulevard's current raised roadbed were the railroad's right of way. Becoming unprofitable as a result of competition from the automobile and the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge, the railway was officially closed on March 1, 1941. The last of the major San Anselmo railroad station buildings was razed in 1963, according to the town's timeline.

The 1913 electric train schedule shows a commute time from San Anselmo to the Sausalito Ferry to the Ferry Building in San Francisco of a mere 58 minutes, including the 32-minute ferry transit.

San Anselmo incorporated on April 9, 1907. Its name came from the Punta de Quintin land grant, which marked the valley as the Canada del Anselmo, or Valley of Anselm, Anselm being the name of a Native American who was buried in the area. San Anselmo was a silent film capital in the early 1900s.

World War II
Sleepy Hollow ammunition storage
During World War II, the Army based a small ammunition storage dump, known as ASP #2, about 2 miles up Butterfield Road from Sir Francis Drake Blvd. The facility was located between the road and San Anselmo Creek and had 23 to 45 men stationed there. There were two batteries composed of four-inch antiaircraft cannon manned by five soldiers on a 24-hour basis. One battery was on Stuyvesant Drive and the other on Oak Springs Hill. During the war, the Sleepy Hollow Country Club, located in the old Hotaling mansion, was still open and provided a pleasant break from grueling guard duty, according to those stationed at the ammo dump.

The average high temperature is 85 °F, in July, and the average low temperature is 41 °F , in January and December. The record high was 111 °F in July 1972, and record low was 18 °F in December 1990. Average rainfall is 47.47 inches , with the rainiest month being January.

All but a sliver of San Anselmo lies within the 28-square-mile Ross Valley Watershed that flows into San Francisco Bay. The principal waterway of the town's portion of the watershed is San Anselmo Creek, a branch of Corte Madera Creek. Two of San Anselmo Creek's tributaries, Sleepy Hollow Creek and Sorich Creek, also flow through the town, as do East Fork Creek and West Fork Creek, Sorich Creek's two tributaries.

There are three main roads running through San Anselmo. Their junction is known locally as the Hub, which lies near the central business district. Sir Francis Drake Boulevard runs north from Ross, turns north-west at the Hub, and then proceeds west to Fairfax. Red Hill Avenue (also called The Miracle Mile) runs west from San Rafael, after 4th Street and 3rd Street merge, and into the Hub where it becomes Center Boulevard. Center Boulevard runs northwest from the Hub to Fairfax and Sir Francis Drake parallels Center Boulevard to Fairfax, offset to the north.

The town's natural skyline is dominated by the hills of Ross Valley. To the north are Red Hill and Grove Hill. To the southwest is Bald Hill. To the east is Moore Hill. In the distance to the south is Mount Tamalpais.

San Anselmo's historic raised railroad bed (now Center Boulevard), acts as a dike, providing some flood protection to the west-side houses, upstream of the business district.

A number of homes on the floodplain (called the Flatlands by the Town) as far back as at least 1920, have been built with raised foundations to accommodate the minor periodic floods.

Most of the downtown antique and boutique stores and restaurants, for which San Anselmo is well known, are along the banks of San Anselmo Creek.

Getting to Stinson Beach!

Getting to Stinson Beach! Just brutal, sort of. We have taken a few trips to beautiful Stinson Beach in Marin County, just north of San Francisco by about an hour's drive. All of the trips we have come from the north where the drive is easy. This trip, however, we drove from San Francisco to Stinson Beach. ????

We always heard that the drive is brutal, and it was, but we took the wrong route to Stinson Beach. What we were not aware of, was that there are two routes coming off of Highway 101 to get to Stinson Beach.

In this video, we share what is the safest route to Stinson Beach, and we also share our day at this beautiful and scenic beach.

Steep Ravine Cabins, Mt Tamalpais State Park

A quick walkthrough of cabin 8 (San Andreas) at Steep Ravine Campground in Mount Tamalpais State Park. I've always wanted to stay at one of these rustic coastal cabins just south of Stinson Beach, but wasn't able to find much information online about what they were like inside, so here's a quick video.

Here's a great overview of Steep Ravine, including a list of my favorite cabins and campgrounds, what to bring for your first trip, how to secure a campsite/cabin reservation, and lots more!

100 Best Hikes in California

Note that I haven't hiked all the great trails in California.
Also note that the order of the hikes in the video is not the ranking. Although I did my best to arrange them in the order of most memorable hikes based on my personal experiences, I really cannot tell which one was the best. They were all amazing and unique experiences.

I regret that I couldn't include any hikes from Death Valley National Park and Channel Island National Park. I visited Death Valley National Park before I started Youtube and I really liked it. I just had no chance to film hiking there. Channel Island National Park is still on my bucket list.

You can see all my videos on the map by clicking here.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It links San Francisco (the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula) to Marin County. The construction of the Golden Gate bridge started in 1933 and ended in 1937. It opened on May 27, 1937.

The Muir Woods National Monument is an old-growth coastal redwood forest. It is a piece of the nine-square-mile Redwood Creek Watershed, located in the shadow of Mt. Tamalpais. Water flows from the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais into Redwood Creek, meeting the Pacific Ocean at Muir Beach.

Muir Woods became a national monument in 1908. The main attraction of Muir Woods are the coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) trees.

Redwoods are known for their height, and are related to the giant sequoia of the Sierra Nevada. While redwoods can grow to nearly 380 feet (115 m), the tallest tree in the Muir Woods is 258 feet (79 m). The Muir Woods National Monument is named after naturalist John Muir. Most of the redwoods in the monument are between 500 and 800 years old. The oldest is at least 1,200 years old.

Sausalito is a city in Marin County, across the Golden Gate Strait from San Francisco. Sausalito is home to several art galleries and festivals. It is also a popular shopping and recreational area, with a boardwalk along the bay and scenic views of Angel Island, Belvedere Tiburon and San Francisco Bay.

The Dipsea Trail - Running the Double Dipsea - Mill Valley - Muir Woods - Stinson Beach Hiking

A trail that is high on the list for many hikers and runners, the Dipseas trail takes you from Mill Valley through the Muir Woods and ending at the ocean in Stinson Beach. With the famous Dipsea stairs, giant redwoods, beach views and flowy trail. I highly recommend adding this one to the list. And for this video I’ll be doing the Double Dipsea. Running the trail as an out and back, for around 15 miles total.

I hope you like it and let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Hidden Panoramic Rope Swings in San Francisco That Are Instagram-Worthy

San Francisco, with its hills, has a ton of Instagram-worthy panoramas. Locals have a crazy tradition of putting up rope swings at the top of these vistas so that as you swing out you feel like you are literally flying into the landscape. It's exhilarating and picture perfect.

Greenbrae, California

Greenbrae is a small unincorporated community in Marin County, California. It is located 1.5 miles south-southeast of downtown San Rafael, at an elevation of 33 feet located adjacent to U.S. Route 101 at the opening of the Ross Valley. Part of Greenbrae is an unincorporated community of the county while the remaining area is inside the city limits of Larkspur. The ZIP code is 94904, and is shared with the neighboring Census-designated place of Kentfield. The community is in area codes 415 and 628.

Predominantly composed of hillside and waterfront terrain, its homes and offices are known for their views of the San Francisco Bay, Corte Madera Creek, and Mount Tamalpais. Brae means a steep bank or hillside in dialects of Scotland and Northern Ireland; Greenbrae translates to green hillside.

Greenbrae's neighborhoods are bordered by downtown Larkspur to the south, Larkspur Landing to the east, the unincorporated area of Kentfield to the west, and the city of San Rafael to the north. Straddling Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, its most frequented points of interest include Marin General Hospital and Bon Air Shopping Center.

It is in the Tamalpais Union High School District. The developer of Greenbrae was Schultz Building Company, which included Niels Schultz and his son Niels Schultz, Jr. In 1946, the area of land was originally 635 acres of farmland and was purchased for development by the Archdiocese of San Francisco.Schultz built more than 1,000 homes, 1,500 apartments and dozens of businesses. When designing the neighborhood they focused on saving the local oak trees, design, housing setbacks, landscaped medians, and open areas.

Many years ago Larkspur annexed Greenbrae, as a result Greenbrae is sometimes referred to as a neighborhood within Larkspur.
