Sergey Karpukhin's Photography - Suntar-Khayata - Russia

Suntar-Khayata
It looks like just enumeration of some geographical objects, doesn't it? But it is a route of a difficult photo expedition. The Suntar mountain range, stretched out in the areas of the south-east part of Yakutia and the north-west part of the Khabarovsk Territory, first caught my attention few years ago. When you look at the map, you can notice that the Suntar-Khayata stands out among surrounding mountains for its height and iced tops. Besides, it is situated near Kolymskaya road, which makes it possible to visit this area. But the final decision to visit this region I took after watching some photos on Internet, when I was impressed by coloured mountains. This wasn't an expedition on my own, I was accompanied by a friend, Viktor Proskurko from Vladikavkaz. The trip began from shuttling the weight of 180 kilograms upwards the Suntar valley. It lasted for one month, because we had to carry it over 120 kilometres. Nevertheless, the main objective was not power lifting, but creativity - taking pictures, that's why we had lots of stops. Thus we climbed to the Suntar's origines, and then crossed over to the Khabarovsk Territory, where the river Udoma begins. In this part the river is called Nitkan. It turned out to be the most beautiful part of our route. Then, we reached places where water was sufficiently high for river rafting, there we built up the catamaran and sailed down the river 600 kilometres to the first settlement, which is named Yugoryonok. We managed to visit that wonderful place, watched colourful mountains and headed back. During two months we had had only two meetings with the Evenks. Now I have the opportunity to share everything we've seen with those who are interested in our unforgetable journey.

Part 1 of 15 videos of the first solo descent of the Indigirka River, in the far east of Siberia, during a combined kayak- mountaineering expedition. That first day I was paddling down the Suntar River, which mounds into the Indigirka 50 kilometers from my starting point. Then, completely unexpected, something went almost terribly wrong.

This film is a collection of photographs from my expeditions from 1996 -- 2012. Sergey Karpukhin's Photography - Tofalariya - Russia

Tofalariya! Outstanding, wonderful, mysterious mountain country of taiga, lost in the heart the East Sayan. It's a place of wild and severe mountain ranges, created by forces of nature. It's an almost impassable region of taiga, where trees die from old age, and centenary cedars can shelter a traveler from bad weather. It's a land of animal paths and pure rivers and streams. It's easy to come across with a bear, but difficult -- with a man. Only about one thousand people live on the territory of more than 21 thousand square kilometers. Less than a half of them are the Tofalars, descendants of a nomadic nation, who domesticated a wild deer many centuries ago.
Only three small settlements -- Alygdjer, Verhnyaya Gutara and Nerha -- stand apart from the civilization. There are not any roads and you can get there only by aviation or in a sledge during winter. Tofalariya doesn't have strict borders and is a part of Irkutsk region. There are territories of Tuva to the south and of Buryatiya to the east.
This photoexcursion was held in the frameworks of the project Genuine nature, a photogeographical investigation of the remote regions, slightly developed by people.
To get from Nijneudinsk to Verhnyaya Gutara, I had to go 250 kilometres during 24 hours by absolutely impassable road for all cars except soviet Ural. Then I went down the Murkhoi river with a group of tourists from Novosibirsk and Omsk. In Verhnyaya Gutara I managed to rent horses and tried an old method of transport. Unfortunately even horses couldn't pass The Sayan Mountains.
Further the main stage of expedition began -- on my own, without any link with the external world. I had to combine the art of photography and the art of surviving. During one and a half months I had worked in the most remote part of the lost Tofalariya. Within this period of time I became familiar with a rather vast territory, the length of the route formed 200 kilometres, with 80 kilograms of products and equipment. In spite of the bad weather I managed to take lots of photos. The working process was disturbed by rains and insects. In the end of August on one of the passes I was covered by snow. Regular and close meetings with bears became usual attribute of living.
Lots of difficulties hindered working process, but so deep diving in genuine world makes possible to become a part of it.

Sergey Karpukhin's Photography - Podkamennaya Tunguska - Russia

htpp://
Podkamennaya Tunguska
The name of this rather long river is well-known to many Russians. Its also very famous outside of Russia because of Tunguska meteorite. Although nobody has found remains of this meteorite yet, there is a fact that in 1908 in taiga, not far away from Vanara settlement a great explosion happened. You can see the signs of this accident even nowadays. Lots of hypothesis have been offered since then. Undoubtedly the mystery draws strong attention of those, who look for adventures. But the Tunguska is interesting place in itself, even without the meteorite phenomenon. To prove that, I had to take a long voyage down the river. The Podkamennaya Tunguska is a big right inflow of the Yenisei, it runs through the vast territory of Srednesibirskoe Plato. It originates in Irkutsk region, but the main part of it's way lies in Evenkiya. This river is crossed by neither any road, nor any bridge. There are only two big settlements on its banks: Vanavara and Baikit. Its surrounded with endless territories of taiga. My fellow worker Kirill Shapovalov and I went great distance down the river - all the 1700 kilometres - from the beginnings to it's mouth. We spent more than two months, surrounded by taiga, the river and the spirit of this region. As a result we've got intense feelings and great photomaterial.
