A video of our day in the beautiful village of Sanary-sur-Mer located in the Var department on the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur). Sanary is a popular but quiet coastal resort which features a colorful harbor, many narrow streets in its old town and a lively market that takes place every Wednesday. When walking around the port of Sanary, you can't miss the famous Provencal boats, also called pointus, which are Latin sail and oar boats. Don't forget to climb the Tour de Sanary to admire the breathtaking view it offers over the village and the harbor!

Hidden Gems of the South of France: Sanary-sur-Mer and the Île des Embiez
Join us on our trip to France where we travel to some of the hidden gems in the South of France including Sanary-sur-Mer and the Île des Embiez.
In Episode 12 of our Eurotrip 2020 series, we feature highlights of our trip around the South of France starting with a visit to the lovely town of Aix-en-Provence. The main highlight here for us was the hike up the Montagne Sainte-Victoire. The views were phenomenal, and a natural wonder not to miss in the Aix-en-Provence area!
Afterwards, we head to the sea-side town of Sanary-sur-Mer, located right on the Côte d'Azur, to visit a friend and to finally put up our feet and relax a bit! During our time here, we visit the Île des Embiez, a spectacular place to relax on a beach or to hike around the island. We absolutely loved it!
On our last day in Sanary-sur-Mer we went on a dolphin boat cruise in the morning, followed by an afternoon boat cruise to Calanques National Park. We were blown away by the shear beauty and uniqueness of the Calanques and admit it was one of our highlights during our entire visit to the Côte d'Azur!

Villefranche-sur-Mer, a prestigious city on the Côte d'Azur, offers you as soon as you arrive, whether by the ledges, the sea or the train, a grandiose panorama.
Located 4 km from Nice and 12 km from Monaco, at the foot of a vast amphitheater of hills, it was founded in 1295 and has kept many vestiges of its origin.
Maritime city with a privileged location welcoming the most beautiful units but also a small fishing port... its gastronomy is quite naturally based on fish directly supplied by local fishermen.
History :
The bay of Villefranche has been frequented since Antiquity by Greek and Roman sailors. They use it as an anchorage and give it the name of Olivula Portus. However, the site is the victim of repeated barbaric attacks. In the ninth century, Saracen pirates held a fortress on the site of Villefranche-sur-Mer25. The inhabitants forsake the seaside and take refuge on the heights; they founded another village there, Montolivo.Villefranche Foundation
In 1295, Charles II of Anjou, Count of Provence, understood the strategic importance of this site, located on the borders of his territory. In order to encourage the inhabitants to return to populate the seaside, he granted them a tax exemption. The village is thus baptized Villa Franca.

Sanary-sur-Mer ist ein Geheimtipp seit mehr als 100 Jahren und hat eine etwas bewegtere Geschichte: Nach 1933 holte Rene Schickele seine verfolgten Freunde - Bertolt Brecht, Lion Feuchtwanger, die Brüder Mann, Erwin Piscator, Ernst Toller, Franz Werfel und viele andere.
So wurde Sanary zum Refugium einer aus Nazi-Deutschland vertriebenen Elite. Das ging nur bis 1940 gut, denn Viele, die nicht rechtzeitig in die USA ausgewandert waren, wurden dann von der Vichy-Regierung in den berüchtigten Lagern, z.B. in Les Milles in der Nähe von Aix-en-Provençe, interniert.
Einigen, den Feuchtwangers, Werfels sowie Heinrich und Golo Mann gelang eine abenteuerliche Flucht über die Pyrenäen. Die 1944, vor der Landung der Alliierten, gesprengte Villa «La Tranquille» der Manns wurde wieder aufgebaut.

Sanary-sur-Mer and Toulon, France
Sanary works its lazy charm on visitors with a pretty harbour, large, lively street markets and the Old Town's cobbled, pedestrianized backstreets.
It is a place for strolling around, relaxing deliciously in the provençal sun, and using it as a starting point for a boat trip to the Calanques.
Sanary is a significant diving centre with a rich history of this sport and offers all the other marine pastimes, including sailing and fishing.

Sanary-sur-Mer est une station balnéaire située en région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Elle est réputée pour son port avec ses voiliers provençaux qui sont également appelés « Pointus » et classés « monument historique ».
Le Gros-Cerveau est une montagne située dans les hauts de Sanary-sur-Mer. Elle culmine à 446 mètres d'altitude et offre des points de vue sur la Méditerranée et les villes aux alentours tels que Toulon, Sanary-sur-Mer, Bandol et jusqu'aux îles au large de Marseille.
Six-Fours-les-Plages se trouve entre les communes d'Ollioules, Sanary-sur-Mer et La Seyne-sur-Mer. L’île du Gaou marque l'extrémité sud-ouest de la commune et constituent des réserves naturelles précieuses et une destination touristique prisée.

Sanary-sur-Mer (Occitan: Sant Nari), popularly known as Sanary, is a commune in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Southeastern France. In 2018, it had a population of 16,696. Sanary-sur-Mer is located in coastal Provence on the Mediterranean Sea, 13 km (8.1 mi) west of Toulon and 49 km (30 mi) southeast of Marseille. It can be reached from Paris by TGV in less than four hours. In high season there are direct flights to nearby Toulon–Hyères Airport from London, Oslo, Brussels and Rotterdam.
