Malmesbury is a market town and civil parish in the southern Cotswolds in the county of Wiltshire, England. Technology company Dyson is headquartered in Malmesbury, which remains a market town and became prominent in the Middle Ages as a centre for learning focused on and around Malmesbury Abbey, the bulk of which forms a rare survival of the dissolution of the monasteries. Once the site of an Iron Age fort, in the Anglo-Saxon period it became the site of a monastery famed for its learning and one of Alfred the Great's fortified burhs for defence against the Vikings.
The hilltop contains several freshwater springs, which helped early settlements. It was the site of an Iron Age fort, and in the Anglo-Saxon period it had a monastery famed as a centre of learning. The town is listed in the Burghal Hidage as one of Alfred the Great's defended burhs assessed at 1200 hides, its Iron Age defences helping to provide protection against Viking attack. The town was described in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a borough. Also within the Domesday Book it is reported to be within the Hundred (county division) of Cicementone. Alfred's grandson, Æthelstan, the first king of England, was buried in Malmesbury Abbey in 939.
The Abbey was founded in 675 by Maildubh, Mailduf or Maelduib, an Irishman. The town came to be named after Maildubh; the name Malmesbury is a combination of Maildubh and burh, meaning Maildubh's fortification. After his death around 700, St Aldhelm became the first abbot and built the first church organ in England, which was described as a mighty instrument with innumerable tones, blown with bellows, and enclosed in a gilded case. Having founded other churches in the area, including at Bradford on Avon, he died in 709 and was canonised. The Abbey's architecture is listed in the highest category and it is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Across the River Avon's Sherston branch via the footpath by 18 Gloucester Street (leading south-west) is a depression called Daniels Well, and a farm beyond it is named after this. This derives from a monk called Daniel named after an earlier Daniel of Winchester. This former bishop, on losing his sight, lived at the abbey briefly until death in 745 and was educated there. The later monk is said to have submerged himself in the cold water every day for decades to quell fiery passions.
The Abbey was the site of an early attempt at human flight in 1010, when, as noted by historian William of Malmesbury, the monk Eilmer of Malmesbury flew a primitive hang glider from a tower. Eilmer flew over 180 metres before landing, breaking both legs.
By the time of the Norman invasion in 1066, Malmesbury was one of the most significant towns in England. It is listed first (thus most important) in the Wiltshire section of the Domesday Book. King Henry I's chancellor, Roger of Salisbury, seized the monastery under his bishopric in 1118, and held it for 20 years. Renowned as a great builder, he rebuilt the wooden town walls wholly in stone rather than wood, constructing the short-lived Malmesbury Castle at the same time.
By the Middle Ages, the north of the town was heavily developed as a religious centre, resulting in the construction of the third Abbey on the site, the 12th-century Malmesbury Abbey, which had a spire 7 metres (23ft) taller than the 123 metres (404ft) one of Salisbury Cathedral. In 1220 this resulted in the construction of the Abbey guest house, which is now The Old Bell hotel and claims to be the oldest hotel in England. The Abbey's spire collapsed in either the late 15th or early 16th century. Under his English Reformation, King Henry VIII, sold the substantial land, but retaining a minor choice portion, to a local clothier William Stumpe. The extant part of the Abbey is now the parish church; the remains containing a parvise which still holds some fine examples of books from the former Abbey library.
Malmesbury natives are sometimes nicknamed Jackdaws, originating from the avian colony of these that inhabit the Abbey walls and roof.

We visit Malmesbury in The Cotswolds England to see what this lovely Cotswold market town is like, and to visit the famous Malmesbury abbey and walk the historic town streets. If you are looking to travel for a Cotswolds holiday then Malmesbury is a must visit place,
Malmesbury is a market town in Wiltshire, England. It's nestled quite nicely in the Cotswolds on the top of a (very steep!) hill. It's famous for being the town where King Athelstan the first king of England is buried. You can visit his tomb in Malmesbury Abbey (as you can see in this video).
It's our first visit to Malmesbury and we 'enjoy' a stroll uphill towards the Abbey, passing the Smoking Dog pub and other shops, hotels and restaurants that are situated in the town centre. We visit the Market Square and Market Cross which is a historic grade II listed structure and worth looking at if you visit here.
The town is home to the tomb of King Athelstan in the Abbey where he is buried. It's definitely worth a visit to the Abbey to enjoy a quiet wander, and to have tea and cake in the Abbey gardens courtesy of the lovely cafe there.
This town is a must visit for anyone looking for a day trip or holiday in the Cotswolds, England.

Malmesbury Abbey In 4K. Places To Visit In The Cotswolds.
Malmesbury Abbey, at Malmesbury in Wiltshire, England, is a religious house dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. It was one of the few English houses with a continuous history from the 7th century through to the dissolution of the monasteries.
In the later seventh century, the site of the Abbey was chosen by Maildubh, an Irish monk who established a hermitage, teaching local children. Toward the end of his life, in the late seventh century, the area was conquered by the Saxons. Malmesbury Abbey was founded as a Benedictine monastery around 676 by the scholar-poet Aldhelm, a nephew of King Ine of Wessex. The town of Malmesbury grew around the expanding Abbey and under Alfred the Great was made a burh, with an assessment of 12 hides.
In AD 941, King Æthelstan was buried in the Abbey. Æthelstan had died in Gloucester in October 939. The choice of Malmesbury over the New Minster in Winchester indicated that the king remained an outsider to the West Saxon court. A mint was founded at the Abbey around this time.
The Abbey developed an illustrious reputation for academic learning under the rule of abbots such as Aldhelm, John Scotus Eriugena, Alfred of Malmesbury and Aelfric of Eynsham.
The Abbey was the site of an early attempt at human flight when, during the early 11th century, the monk Eilmer of Malmesbury attached wings to his body and flew from a tower. Eilmer flew over 200 yards (200 m) before landing, breaking both legs. He later remarked that the only reason he did not fly further was the lack of a tail on his glider.
The Domesday Book of 1086 says of the Abbey:
In Wiltshire: Highway (11 hides), Dauntsey (10 hides), Somerford Keynes (5 hides), Brinkworth (5 hides), Norton, near Malmesbury (5 hides), Brokenborough with Corston (50 hides), Kemble (30 hides—now in Glos.), Long Newnton (30 hides), Charlton (20 hides), Garsdon (3 hides), Crudwell (40 hides), Bremhill (38 hides), Purton (35 hides); (fn. 127) in Gloucestershire: Littleton - upon - Severn (5 hides); (fn. 128) and in Warwickshire: Newbold Pacey (3 hides). These lands were valued at £188 14s. in all and were assessed as 3 knights' fees.
The 12th-century historian William of Malmesbury was a monk at the Abbey.
The current Abbey was substantially completed by 1180. The 431 feet (131 m) tall spire, and the tower it was built upon, collapsed in a storm around 1500 destroying much of the church, including two-thirds of the nave and the transept.

What are the most miserable towns in the United Kingdom? Many of the towns in the United Kingdom are not doing too badly in terms of basic amenities. The quality of life in those towns is higher even than in places recognized as cities in other countries. Still, it can’t be said that all those towns are having it equally. Assessing the standard of living and quality of life in the UK as a whole, we can describe certain towns in the United Kingdom as miserable. Granted, those towns are not inherently terrible. Yet, the situation there is not acceptable in the light of what we see in other villages, towns, and cities, in the UK. In this video, we shall be discussing the 10 most miserable towns in the UK.
10. Cumbernauld, Scotland
We will start our discussion with a town in Scotland. To give you a hint; this is the first of the three Scottish towns on this list of the 10 most miserable towns in the UK. We are talking about Cumbernauld, a large town in North Lanarkshire with an area of 8.3 square miles or 21.5 square kilometers. Under normal circumstances, it should be a city because of its city-like huge population of 51,000.
It has not shed that horrible description as “Scotland’s most dismal town.” Truly speaking, this town is lacking in anything of the good things you would find in Glasgow or Edinburgh. The center of Cumbernauld has been described as the “Kabul of the North.” This says it all. Whatever you know about Kabul has its miniature in this miserable town.
9. Grimsby, England
The first of the 5 cities in England on this list is Grimsby. Maybe we should stop calling it Great Grimsby. If it were great indeed, this port town and the North East Lincolnshire administrative center on the south bank of the Humber Estuary would have all amenities that would make it rank among the best. But the comments from its residents and one-time visitors indicated that life is miserable in this place that has been voted several times as one of the worst places to live in England.
Therefore, the town of around 100,000 residents is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. Its entire area of 88 square miles (or 230 square kilometers) has been ranked the 18th worst place to live a while ago.
8. Airdrie, Scotland
Back in Scotland; we are now examining Airdrie, a town in North Lanarkshire. It also is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. The town on a plateau with an elevation of 400 feet or 130 meters above sea level is about 12 miles (or 19 kilometers) east of Glasgow city center. During its industrial heyday in the 19th century, coal mining and cotton milling were the major industries, no one could then think of this former industrial town as miserable.
However, the exit of those industries has made life there miserable to extent of being branded the most dismal town in the UK. The PR manager for the town admits it deserves its grim reputation as the worst in Scotland. The town is boring and the buildings are ugly.

What are the most beautiful towns to visit in England? The United Kingdom is obsessed with beautiful surroundings and countryside. England is attempting to blaze the trail and lead the other parts of the Kingdom. Yes, many of the most beautiful towns in the world are in England. Just anyone will have a hard time selecting the most beautiful towns in England to visit. However, we will attempt to list 12 of these based on certain yardsticks that all or most of us can agree upon. Some of these towns are coastal, rural, or castle towns. What we’re sure of is that almost everyone will find one or two of these beautiful towns attractive enough to see something lovely there during the next vacation.
12. Burford, Oxfordshire
Our starting point is Burford, a town on the River Windrush in the West Oxfordshire district of Oxfordshire. Tucked in the Cotswold Hills, Burford is often called the 'gateway' to the Cotswolds, and for good reasons.
This town derives its name from the Old English words ‘burh’ which can mean a ‘fortified town,’ ‘a hilltown and ford,’ and ‘the crossing of a river.’ That connotative meaning draws some mental picture, not so? Burford has been listed among the most picturesque towns in England, with its medieval bridge and stone houses together with the attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages.
11. Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire
Tewkesbury, a medieval market town and civil parish is the next. The Gloucestershire northern town has a significant history in the Wars of the Roses. Located at the confluence of the River Severn and the River Avon, the town is on the border with Worcestershire.
This town with a character all of its own is one of the few places in the Cotswold with buildings of black and white half-timbered. It’s a town to visit by those who love spending time on riverbanks.
10. Painswick, Gloucestershire
We still have good places to visit in Gloucestershire. This time it’s the beautiful town of Painswick. Mainly constructed of locally quarried Cotswold stone, the small town is known for the local Rococo Garden.
This is a budget-friendly town where you can explore a lot during your visit. That’s why we consider it one of the most beautiful towns in England to visit. You have a variety of attractive things to see such that you may be tempted to extend your vacation. Painswick Beacon, for example, is an apt place to go cycling and hiking.
9. Bakewell, Derbyshire
This market town and civil parish is a lovely place in England to visit by anyone who appreciates its local Bakewell pudding. There is no shortage of bakeries dispensing this delicious pudding. However, you can feel some difference if you buy your Bakewell Pudding while visiting the Old Original Bakewell Pudding shop. You can delightfully sample this delicious dessert of pastry with jam and frangipane and top it with toasted almonds.
Its market which is held every Monday is also a must-try if you’re in the town so that you can have something like unique plants, giftware, homeware, fashion items to tools, and carpets to take home.
8. Sandwich, Kent
We come across a Kent location on this our list. The historic town of Sandwich which is also a civil parish in the Dover District of Kent lies on the River Stour. It’s a cool place to visit as one of the Cinque Ports. You can still see many of the original medieval buildings in Sandwich.
Visitors to Sandwich can enjoy nature reserves where two world-class golf courses, namely Royal St George's and Prince's are situated. There are educational and cultural events to witness in this town with Bird Observatory and Nature Reserves which play home to varieties of birds, flora and fauna.

Four Villages in the Cotswolds, UK, Bibury, Malmesbury, Tetbury, Lacock
We are taking you on a visit to four of the beautiful villages of the Cotswolds in England. Come along for a wonderful day trip to:

A short drive in the countryside soon brings us to Bibury. The main attraction here is this splendid row of stone cottages that dates back to the 14th century, in a picturesque setting next to the River Coln, and the open meadow in front.
Bibury is a small village in a rural setting, with the oval outline showing the location of that row of stone cottages called Arlington Row.
We'll be showing you many views of that beautiful sight and also taking you to the famous trout farm in the heart of Bibury, with its water features and lush landscaping.
The small Coln River is a tributary of the Thames and makes an idyllic setting for the stone houses and the pretty flower gardens of the village, with several bridges for cars and pedestrians connecting the two sides of town.
Arlington Row is one of England's most iconic and photographed sites, so famous, the picture has been on the UK passport for a decade. Originally built in the 14th century as a monastic wool storehouse, it was converted in the 17th century into a row of cottages for weavers, who supplied cloth for the two mills in the area, which made this village very prosperous from the wool trade.
This complex of old stone buildings is occupied by tenants who rent their homes from the National Trust.
One of these homes, at number nine, is a holiday cottage that you can rent. However, you do have to rent it for a minimum of three nights. It's got two bedrooms on two floors and can house up to three guests, with a private garden at the rear.
That will lead you to one of England's oldest working trout farms, originally founded in 1902.
It has 15 acres of beautiful farmland and springs, with a trout hatchery that produces over 6 million trout every year.
As usual, the best times to come are shoulder season, either April and May, or September and October, when the weather is quite nice, and the crowds are minimal.
Bibury is the first of our four Cotswold villages that we're visiting on a daytrip from the city of Bath. We're traveling in a small van with our driver-guide provided by Mad Max tours.
Continuing along now through the pretty countryside of Wiltshire, heading for the Cotswold town of Malmesbury. The charming High Street is bursting with an array of independent retailers and eateries, and the town has occasional festivals for music, history and the arts.
The 15th-century Market Cross is one of the country's best preserved, right next to the arch of Birdcage Walk that leads us into the Abbey grounds. This church is always the main focus of any visit to this charming little town.
The church is so old that the first King of all England was buried here in the year 941, honored with this monumental statue, but in the 14th century, the remains of King Athelstan were moved from here to an unknown location. The Abbey is still an active parish church.
Next door is the Old Bell, oldest hotel in England, founded in the early 13th century as lodgings for visiting monks. It's a four-star hotel with a high-quality restaurant.
Next, we are heading to the second largest town in the Cotswolds, Tetbury, situated in the area of outstanding natural beauty, surrounded by landscapes of gently rolling hills.
Right away next to the car park we see the historic cobbled lane called Chipping Steps, lined with picturesque stone cottages.
The historic Market House is at the crossroads at the center of town. It was built in 1655 and it's the most famous building in Tetbury, listed as a historic protected property.
Called Long Street, this is where most of the retail action takes place. It is very easy to explore – just walk all the way down one side and then cross over and walk back up the other side. Although it's called Long Street, it's just 300 meters from one end to the other.
The center of Tetbury is especially renowned for its antique shops and independent boutiques. This High Street has been named one of the UK's top 10 favorite streets for shopping by Homes and Antiques Magazine.
We're moving along now to the final stop on our Cotswold daytrip, the little town of Lacock, which dates from the 13th century and is full of traditional half-timbered and stone houses. It's the quintessential English village.
One of the first landmarks we shall come across is this 14th-century Tithe Barn, which is a grade 1 listed historic property.
Lacock was granted market status and developed a thriving wool industry during the Middle Ages. But production of wool ended in the 19th century, depriving the village of its main source of income, which fortunately for us has kept new developments to a minimum, resulting in this historic gem.

Historic market town Malmesbury and its beautiful Abbey

Hello and welcome. I hope you enjoy this video. It is 7:00 in the morning, today we are walking around Malmesbury. Malmesbury is a town in the north of Wiltshire, in south-west of England.
It is quiet now. The High Street will be busy soon as the food market is about to be set-up.
Malmesbury is a 100 mile drive from central London. The nearest train station to Malmesbury is Chippenham. The town with it’s Abbey sits proud at the top of a flat hill. The River Avon splits south just before Malmesbury with the River Avon flowing west and the Tetbury Avon heading north. Malmesbury is believed to be the oldest continually inhabited town in England. During an archeological dig remains of an Iron Age Fort were found indicating people living here as far back as 500 BC. Many of the buildings in the town date back to the 17th and 18th century. The Old Bell Hotel next to the Abbey is the oldest hotel in England, it has been offering food and a restful night to visitors since 1220. The main feature in Malmesbury is the beautiful Abbey. The Abbey was founded in the year 675, by an Irish monk - Saint Máel Dub. The first church organ in England was built here by a Saint called Aldhelm. By 1066 Malmesbury was a well established town of great importance being particularly well known as an encouraging place for learning. In the 11th century a monk named Elmer flew nearly 200 metres from the Abbey tower with self made wings, before crashing to the ground and breaking his legs. The current Abbey was built in the 12th century and originally had a 130 metre tall spire, sadly the spire collapsed during the 15th or 16th century. In 1651, during the English Civil War, Malmesbury was fought over at great length you can still find cannon and gun shot scars on the external stone walls of the Abbey. In the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries the town flourished producing fine silk and lace. Today the main employer in Malmesbury is the Dyson company, with their headquarters on the edge of town. I feel truly fortunate to have been walking around these streets this morning. Thank you for joining me on this early morning walk and finding out a little bit more about the town.
