What are the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom? We’re doing this video because cities in the United Kingdom are presently in the hearts of many people. We need to say more about the cozy seaside ports and those grand medieval settlements. British cities are generally charming, beautiful, and awesome. In these cities, there’s something for everyone. If you see those cities saturated with history and local charisma from distance, it can be humbling. However, it can sometimes be best to appreciate those cities by stepping back and viewing them from a vantage viewpoint. This video about the 10 most beautiful cities in the UK presents another opportunity to analyze the UK cities. However, it’s tough to can conduct a generally acceptable ranking of the cities United Kingdom cities.
10. Cardiff, Wales
Cardiff represents more than just the seat of government of Wales. This capital city is an expression of the potential of a big city to retain its natural beauty. Hence, it has to be mentioned as early as now in this account. The attraction of this town started during the Industrial Revolution when it was a humble worldwide port of coal.
Among the attractions of this town are delightful boutiques of the Victorian era, the grand Cardiff Castle in the city center, and Cardiff Bay. The city lacks nothing in terms of arts, live music, shows, and modernist architecture. It’s good to see how these have developed from what used to be a mere dockyard less than ten centuries ago. The Bay and Castle are another way to tell the story of the United Kingdom, especially the Welsh strips of the rich account spanning millenniums.

Since we are discussing St Davids, the smallest city in the UK, we are going to make our comments so brief even though there’s a lot to talk about in this city. St Davids is located amid the rolling hills of West Wales. The city in size is smaller than many towns in the UK that haven’t been granted city status.
However, it’s a midget of charm and awesomeness defined by its stone walls and buildings, exotic cathedral, lively markets, and lush greenery. The afternoon tea in the green gardens of the pubs is a norm in St Davids with its mesmeric landscape you can view from atop the hills.

Cross over to Scotland in search of the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom if you’d ever find many cities before its beloved capital city, Edinburgh. This is a breathtaking array of Gothic buildings wearing a modernist twist. Arts, beauty, and sceneries are in no short supply in this gorgeous city.
The landscape of Edinburgh is enriched with dainty stores and bustling markets. And as you wander through winding streets, you can marvel and gaze at the jaw-dropping landmarks, such as the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Edinburgh Castle. Residents of this picturesque city always look forward to welcoming tourists during the annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the largest arts festival in the world held in summer.
9. Belfast, Northern Ireland
From Wales to Scotland, and now out of Scotland we’ll go to the fourth country in the Kingdom, Northern Ireland. Belfast, the capital city of Ireland, deserves a slot here.

Poorest Towns in England - South Kirkby
Why is South Kirkby so poor? South Kirkby appeared in one of our recent videos about the poorest towns in the UK. It’s in the 10th position on that list. But we have one challenge that we want to address now. We struggled to decide which of the facts about South Kirkby to keep out and which ones to add to the discussion. Interestingly, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to be analyzing the poor towns in England one after the other. Thus, we believe some of those facts left out in that video can be included in this one dedicated to South Kirby as one of the poorest towns in England. We don’t intend to make this video a run-down but an attention grabber.
South Kirkby in Perspective
South Kirkby is a town in the City of Wakefield in West Yorkshire This town is governed locally by the administration of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council. South Kirby forms half of its civil parish. It’s often considered alongside Elmsall when ranked regarding factors indicating or contributing to poverty. Note, therefore, that most of what will be said about South Kirkby applies also to Elmsall.
The towns whose motto is “Friendship, Unity & Progress” appears to have forgotten or to be giving less attention to the third word, ‘progress’ in its motto. And if at all it’s making progress, it’s only toward poverty. You’re likely going to see rejections and denials of the facts we’re about to unfold about this town. We expect that the town council and individual stakeholders there may be inclined to defend their town and action in governing the town; we understand.
Why We Focus on Kirkby
Sincerely, we came across Kirkby when we realized that it’s more prominent than its size on the crime data record for the UK. We were tempted to add it to the list of the most dangerous or crime-ridden towns. But that’s a discussion for another day. Yet, we love to tell you what has been discovered by various bodies researching crime rates in South Kirkby and Moorthorpe.
The average crime rate for 2021 in the town was 119 crimes per 1,000 people. When this is placed side-by-side with West Yorkshire’s overall crime rate, it fares so poorly, even though the overage of that county is bad at 113 crimes per 1000 residents. Yet, the rate in Kirkby and Moorthorpe is 5 percent higher. The same source indicates that for the whole of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, South Kirkby and Moorthorpe is the 51st most dangerous small town. And when placed in the context of all the cities, towns, and villages, it is the 372nd most dangerous.
Take the month of September 2021, for instance, for shoplifting. South Kirkby and Moorthorpe had the highest rate among small towns in West Yorkshire, with 32 crimes reported. And the rate was 2.8 shopliftings per 1,000 inhabitants. Another rampant crime was bicycle theft in this town, as little as it is. The rate of this was more conspicuous in August 2021 when it was named the most dangerous small town in West Yorkshire for bicycle theft. It recorded 2 incidents giving a rate of 0.17 thefts per 1,000 residents.
But more worrisome is possession of arms in South Kirkby and Moorthorpe. In November 2021, it received 3 reports of possession of weapons. This makes it the most dangerous small town that possesses weapons in West Yorkshire that month.
Still on crime; the most common crimes, however, in South Kirkby and Moorthorpe up till now are violence and sexual offenses. The small town reported 585 offenses in 2021. Given that rate, 50 of such offenses were committed in 1,000 residents.

West Kirby is a town on the north-west corner of the Wirral Peninsula in Merseyside, England, at the mouth of the River Dee. To the north-east lies Hoylake, to the east Grange and Newton, and to the south-east Caldy.
The old village lay around St. Bridget's Church, but the town today is centred on West Kirby railway station, which is about 1 km away. The town has a Victorian promenade, flanked by the West Kirby Marine Lake that permits boats to sail even at low tide. The original wall was built to create the lake in 1899 but suffered a catastrophic leak in 1985. A new lake was constructed on the site which is wider than previously and allows better sporting opportunities. The Hoylake and West Kirby War Memorial is a notable local landmark, designed in 1922 by the British sculptor Charles Sargeant Jagger, who was responsible for a number of war memorials around the world, including the Royal Artillery Memorial at Hyde Park Corner in London.
West Kirby was a township and parish within the Wirral Hundred. It became part of Hoylake West Kirby civil parish and Hoylake Urban District in 1894. The population was 148 in 1801, 435 in 1851 and 4,542 in 1901. On 1 April 1974, West Kirby was absorbed into the newly created Metropolitan Borough of Wirral as part of local government reorganisation in England and Wales. At that point, West Kirby ceased to be in Cheshire for administrative purposes and became part of the new administrative county of Merseyside.
West Kirby lies at the north-western corner of the Wirral Peninsula. West Kirby is situated on the eastern side of the mouth of the Dee Estuary, and approximately 8 mi (13 km) west of Liverpool. Hilbre Island is approximately 1 mi (1.6 km) offshore from West Kirby, at the mouth of the Dee Estuary. St Bridget's Church is West Kirby's Church of England parish church, and the chancel of the present church dates from around 1320. St Andrew's Church is West Kirby's second Church of England church, originally built as a chapel of ease for St Bridget's, gaining its own parish in 1920. St Agnes' Church is the local Roman Catholic church.[11] West Kirby also has a United Reformed church, which dates to 1890, and a Methodist church which dates to 1904.
The town itself contains Ashton Park and a starting point of the Wirral Way, which follows the trackbed of the former Birkenhead Railway branch line from Hooton. Sandlea Park lies in the centre of the town, a short walk from the railway station. Coronation Gardens is located between the southern end of the promenade between South Parade and Banks Road. There are various other small parks and bowling greens situated around the town. Another popular activity is to walk out to the islands of Little Eye, Middle Eye and Hilbre Island at low tide. The promenade, beach and the walk to the war memorial allow an excellent panoramic view of part of the North Wales coastline.
Grange Road, the main thoroughfare of West Kirby, is situated on the A540 road. The B5141, starting at the Dee Lane junction with Grange Road, joins West Kirby with Caldy via Banks Road, Sandy Lane and Caldy Road. West Kirby railway station is the western terminus of Merseyrail's Wirral line, with return services to Liverpool, Southport, Ormskirk, Liverpool Airport and Chester.

Let’s start this by informing you that in this list of the poorest towns in the UK, there are as many as 7 of them in England. This is understandable. England’s dominance of the United Kingdom cannot and shouldn’t be limited to positive stories. If England has the richest towns and cities in the country, it should also have the poorest. And as usual, the towns in Northern Ireland remain in the middle, even in this too—not the richest, not the poorest. So you can’t find them here. 10. South Kirkby, England
This town in the City of Wakefield in West Yorkshire is under the local government administration by South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council. We beamed our searchlight on South Kirkby to ascertain the reason for the soaring rate of crime in this town and we discovered that it’s poverty. This town is an economically deprived area, according to the latest statistics from the Indices of Multiple Deprivation. It can be hard to get a job in this town.
It’s found that South Kirkby has 20 percent fewer Higher and Intermediate administrative, managerial, or professional households than the national average. More so, the percentage of those claiming benefits in this town is higher than the average which suggests that many people are likely underemployed or on a low salary. No wonder it has some serious issues with crime.
9. Newport, Wales
Let’s get it straight here and lock it in. We are referring to the town of Newport, which is a parish on the Pembrokeshire coast in West Wales. This community which is also an electoral ward is an ancient port of Parrog at the mouth of the River Nevern in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
The latest of the Welsh Index of Multiple deprivation statistics which is released once 5 five years shows that Newport is one of the 10 poorest parts of Wales. Of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods, 23 in Newport now rank as some of the most deprived in Wales. This is 24 percent of the authority. That is the biggest percentage of any in the United Kingdom. Pillgwenlly, a red-light district of Pill is in big problems with drugs. Life is also miserable in other areas of the town like Tredegar Park, Bettws, and Ringland.
8. Hastings, England
The next is a large seaside town and borough located in East Sussex on the south coast of England. Hastings is 39 kilometers east of the county town of Lewes and 85 kilometers southeast of London. This town which got its name from the Battle of Hastings which took place in 1066, 13 kilometers northwest of Senlac Hill, is now one of the poorest in the United Kingdom.
In order to remove this town from the list of the most deprived in England, millions of pounds have been spent on the town. It, however, has nothing to justify that investment. People in this town are living from hand to mouth. In many cases, they can’t afford the things normally taken for granted such as heating and fuel. The town has to depend on nongovernmental charity organizations to enjoy the necessities of life.

Poorest Cities in the UK – Nottingham
Why is Nottingham so poor? Oh, my Nottingham! So we wish to exclaim. Alas! Salvos being fired from both sides of the divide hasn’t given us a cause for exultation in Nottingham. Can you count the number of times Nottingham has been named the poorest city in the UK within 7 years? There is definitely some requiring attention in and about this city. Oh you who dislike Nottingham, please know that you haven’t found support in this video. And you enthusiastic admirers of this city, we’re not out here now to increase your fan base. As usual, we would look at the available facts regardless of fervent rebuffs of figures by the city officials, and serve you nothing but the truth.

Let's peep into what available data reveals about Nottingham's situation. We start with figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Nottingham’s gross disposable household income (GDHI) is the lowest in the UK. According to the last available figures, the average yearly after-tax earnings in the city is 12,445 pounds. With that amount, residents of Nottingham resident's earnings are over 7,000 pounds less than the national average. Those who consider this alone will be justified in their assertion that Nottingham is one of the poorest cities.
The employment rate also doesn’t bode well for the city. According to the last available figures, only 57 percent of all Nottingham’s 16 to 64-year-olds are at work. This is the lowest employment rate of all major cities in the United Kingdom. This is one of the reasons the city is the poorest of 179 areas across the country. But when you look at the overall scores, Nottingham isn’t just at the bottom, it’s so far behind the rest.
As expected, this breeds crime, the rate of which has increased across the region. We all know that there’s a close link between deprivation and poverty and crime. While explaining his decision to establish the Nottingham School of Boxing in the city, Marcellus Baz, of Sneinton, a repentant gang member said that he saw there were many areas of deprivation in the city and he wanted to get the youth there to work.
Council’s Rejection
This appears to be a kind of indictment of the city council. We, therefore, understand it keeps rejecting the ranking giving a lot of reasons. Well, this is not an isolated response. This has always been the position of Nottingham’s council. One of the reasons given by the council is that it has many affluent suburbs that aren’t captured in the figures as part of the city's official boundaries. For that reason, the results, they said, have been skewed by geography. The council further states that based on its own calculation, the figure that would truly represent the city’s situation is 16,000 pounds per person once affluent suburbs like West Bridgford and Beeston have been included.
The council believes that Nottingham would move up to the 56th position of the UK districts if the places where people have more disposable income are included in the city figures. It claims that more than half of the people employed in Nottingham City live in surrounding districts.
Also, the city council always blamed the unusually high student in the city for the low ranking. As usual, the council says the city’s apparent poor economic performance is a result of 46,000 students who are less likely to be in full-time or well-paid forms of employment. According to the council, the figures of these people have diluted those of the individuals in well-paid and highly-skilled jobs who live in more prosperous adjoining boroughs.

It may surprise you to know that the land this one occupies was once coastal, but the town is most famous for its coal-mining past. It was the site of Frickley Colliery, which was one of the largest deep coal mines in the United Kingdom. A busy market town these days, it has easy access to both Doncaster and Wakefield.
The Warde-Aldams were an important local family that owned many properties both in and around this part of West Yorkshire. We’ve met the name before – they owned Hooton Pagnell Hall and Frickley Hall, both of which we met in the Doncaster series.
Frickley Athletic Football Club are currently members of the Northern Premier League Division One East – the eighth tier of football in England. Ronnie Radford, scorer of the famous long-range goal for non-League Hereford United against First-Division Newcastle United in 1972, in one of the FA Cup's greatest giant-killing acts, was born here.
Frickley Country Park officially opened in September 2009, after a long period of land reclamation, environmental cleaning and landscaping of the former Frickley Colliery site was finished. In the town centre there is a colliery memorial which states on the stone that accompanies a winding wheel - out of these depths this village grows.

Kendal, anciently known as Kirkby in Kendal or Kirkby Kendal, is a market town and civil parish within the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, England. Historically in Westmorland, Kendal is situated about 8 miles (13 km) south-east of Windermere, 19 miles (31 km) north of Lancaster, 23 miles (37 km) north-east of Barrow-in-Furness and 38 miles (61 km) north-west of Skipton. The town of Kendal lies in the valley or dale of the River Kent, from which it derives its name
Kendal today is known largely as a centre for tourism, as the home of Kendal mint cake, and as a producer of pipe tobacco and tobacco snuff. Its buildings, mostly constructed with the local grey limestone, have earned it the nickname Grey Auld Town. Kendal stands on the River Kent, surrounded by low hills. Kendal is near (but not in) the Lake District National Park. When the National Park was formed in 1951 the boundary was deliberately shaped to exclude Kendal. Although a relatively small town, Kendal is an important commercial centre for a wide area thanks to its rural location. Kendal is affectionately referred to as The Gateway to The Lakes.
Kendal railway station is situated on the Windermere Branch Line and gives connections to Windermere railway station to the north, and Oxenholme Lake District railway station (on the West Coast Main Line) and Lancaster railway station to the south. Kendal is around 8 miles (12 km) from the M6 motorway, and is bypassed on the west by the A591 road, linking it to Windermere, Keswick and the A590 leading to Barrow, as well as being the terminus of the A65 road to Kirkby Lonsdale, Skipton and Yorkshire and a destination on the A6 road to Penrith. The Lancaster Canal was built as far as Kendal in 1819, but the northern section was rendered unnavigable by the construction of the M6.

Kirkby Stephen is a civil parish and small market town in Cumbria, in North West England which historically, is part of Westmorland. The town is located on the A685, surrounded by sparsely populated hill country, and about 25 miles (40 km) from the nearest larger towns, Kendal and Penrith. The River Eden rises 6 miles (9.7 km) away in the peat bogs below Hugh Seat and passes by, almost unobserved, on the eastern edge of the town.
Kirkby Stephen has a parish council and is a centre for several smaller villages and parishes in the surrounding area, including Nateby, Ravenstonedale and Mallerstang. A community and council centre in the library, provides information and services on behalf of all the local councils (county, district and parish), and general and local information and facilities.
Kirkby Stephen serves as a base for tourism in the Upper Eden Valley area and for walking tours of the Valley. It is on the line of the Coast to Coast Walk, devised by Alfred Wainwright, Each June there is the Mallerstang Horseshoe and Nine Standards Yomp which takes a strenuous route along the high ground along both sides of the neighbouring dale of Mallerstang, including Wild Boar Fell and the summit of nearby Nine Standards Rigg. The surrounding countryside attracts walkers but the Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team sometimes has to assist those who are not fully prepared for harsh conditions on the fell tops.
It is sometimes said that Faraday Road (parallel with High Street and Market Street) is named in honour of the scientist, Michael Faraday (1791–1867) but it is named after his uncle, Richard Faraday, who was a respected local tradesman. Richard's younger brother, James, was for some time the blacksmith in Outhgill, but his third child, Michael, was born soon after they had moved to London. The Faraday brothers moved from Clapham in the West Riding to the Kirkby Stephen area because the family were all members of the Sandemanian sect, and at that time there was locally one of the few Sandemanian communities with a chapel, which was in the courtyard behind what is now the HSBC bank.
Stenkrith Park is south of the town on the B6259 road to Nateby. The river scenery here marks the change from limestone at the head of the Eden Valley in Mallerstang, to the red sandstone which is characteristic further along the Eden Valley. The main rock, from which most houses in Kirkby Stephen is built, is brockram, composed of fragments of limestone in a cement of red sandstone. The river at Stenkrith has carved this rock into many fantastic shapes, collectively known as the Devil's Grinding Mill or Devil's Hole. This spectacular natural scenery has been supplemented, in recent years, by three (human) additions. The ‘Poetry Path' has 12 stones which were carved by the artist Pip Hall, with poems by Meg Peacock, depicting a year in the life of a hill farmer.
Eden Benchmarks: Beside the river there is a sculpture by Laura White, entitled ‘Passage', one of the ten Eden Benchmarks, a series of sculptures that have been placed at intervals along the River Eden from its source in Mallerstang to the Solway Firth. The Millennium Bridge was opened in 2002, and provides pedestrian access from the park to a walk along the old south Durham railway track.
Kirkby Stephen West station, on the Settle-Carlisle Line, is located over 1 mile (2 km) south west of the town. This railway line kept to the high ground and avoided descending into the valleys wherever possible. A second, older, railway station is also situated in the village. This is Kirkby Stephen East station, situated at the southern edge of the village. Originally a large junction of the South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway and the Eden Valley Railway, the station was re-opened by the Stainmore Railway Company in August 2011 as a heritage centre and operational railway representing the 1950's, and is open to visitors every weekend.

Kirkby Lonsdale is a small town and civil parish in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria, England, on the River Lune. Historically in Westmorland, it is situated 13 miles south east of Kendal along the A65. Notable buildings include St Mary's Church, a Norman structure with fine carved columns. The view of the River Lune from the churchyard is known as Ruskin's View; it was praised by John Ruskin as One of the loveliest views in England and painted by J.M.W. Turner.
Kirkby Lonsdale developed at a crossing point over the River Lune where several drovers' and packhorse routes converged. It is one of the few Cumbrian towns mentioned in the Domesday Book, where it is described as Cherchibi (village with a church). The earlier church was wholly rebuilt by the Normans, who also erected an artificial mound or motte on nearby glebe land.
A wooden tower or 'keep' would have been built on the top, and the stronghold used as a base to administer power and control over the surrounding area. In later years, the mound was used for cockfighting, hence the current name of Cockpit Hill. In 1093, Ivo de Taillebois (Baron of Kendal) gifted the church at Kirkby Lonsdale to St Mary's Abbey in York, which held it until the Dissolution. Thereupon the Abbey and all its possessions, including St Mary's Church at Kirkby Lonsdale, were granted to Trinity College, Cambridge, which retains patronage to this day.
In 1227, the town gained a market charter and the right to hold an annual fair every September. Every week, stallholders would gather on Market Street to sell their wares, with horse traders in the Horsemarket and pig sellers in Swinemarket. Thursdays were, as now, the scene of great activity as people flocked into the town to buy all manner of goods and merchandise.
The steep incline of Mill Brow with its fast flowing (now culverted) stream was the industrial heart of Kirkby Lonsdale, with several mills using water power for grinding corn, bark and bone, carding wool, manufacturing snuff, making bobbins, fulling cloth and sawing timber.
The Keighley and Kendal Turnpike of 1753 passed through Kirkby Lonsdale and there met a turnpike from Milnthorpe on the coast. In 1818 the two trusts were amalgamated. Kirkby Lonsdale railway station, 2 miles (3 km) away in Lancashire, opened in 1861 and closed to passengers in 1954.
Today, Kirkby Lonsdale bustles with activity, with a weekly market, many local events and traditional shops. The centre is a mix of elegant 18th century buildings and stone cottages huddled around cobbled courtyards and narrow alleyways, with names such as Salt Pie Lane and Jingling Lane.

Black Horse Inn, Kirkby Fleetham - North Yorkshire's Best Pub Stopover?
We believe we have found North Yorkshire's best Motorhome and Campervan pub stop over, perhaps even the best in Britain!
In November, we stay in our campervan at the Black Horse Inn located in Kirkby Fleetham, North Yorkshire which isn't far from the A1 at Leeming Bar and Catterick. This is the best free pub stopover we have stayed at. It even included free electricity and the stay was free so long as you eat/drink in the pub. Can’t say fairer than that.
We had fish and chips and they were exceptional, huge and tasty as well as that we had a delicious breakfast before continuing on our journey.
Let us know if you’ve found a better pub stopover, we think this is very hard to beat! 5/5 from us!
It’s very well placed for the A1 if you’re travelling north or south.
