Visiting France's Most Dangerous City...

We booked tickets to Marseille only to discover afterwards it's poor reputation for crime and safety. This made us incredibly nervous and the more we researched the more bad we found. After hours of research, I was nearly dreading our trip, but like anywhere we go, we wanted to give Marseille a chance and treat it with caution.

We left Marseille feeling fulfilled, inspired, and sad to go so soon. Going in with such low expectations left us feeling quite appreciative of everything there is to see. The city is old with modern and impressively progressive features and overall the city is a multicultural hub. To us, the city was flowing with art, creativity, and music. People were fashionably dressed, expressive, and incredibly kind to us (even though we don’t speak a word of French).

It’s always important for us to go into places with an open mind, ready to form our own opinions apart from those on the internet. Like any city Marseille has its bad areas, but we are so grateful these didn’t deter us from experiencing everything she has to offer.

Howdy! We're Jenna & Andrew and we create travel vlogs. With this channel we hope to do more than just the typical bucket list. We set out to better understand the culture, language, and most importantly the people of the places we travel to. Our channel is designed to give a unique perspective and knowledge of each country, and our honest and true experience.

Blois Chateau, Loire, France travel video

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
The French city of Blois in the Loire Valley has one of the largest and most interesting of the châteaux of the Loire Valley, built up in a variety of architectural styles over its 700 year period. It was home to many of the kings and queens of France. And there is also a very friendly pedestrian center to the town.
Because so many powerful kings lived here and were associated with the château, it was built up over the centuries in a variety of architectural styles. This one building exhibits the medieval and the Renaissance and then the French classic style later of François Mansart.
The historic center is 800 meters wide, very easy to walk around in. The ancient Old Town is built upon a steep slope, crowned by the historical castle at one end of the ridge, and by the cathedral at the other. As a result there are numerous staircase streets running up the hills.
The old part of town next to the château is a healthy and vibrant neighborhood with shops and cafés scattered and residences in the blocks behind.
The main street of the Old Town is rue Saint-Lubin which leads right into the major square, Place Louis XII.

CURIOSITIES ON BOLOGNA:

If the Torre degli Asinelli is the highest leaning medieval tower in the world, the leanest tower is its neighbor, the Garisenda tower, leaning 4 degrees against the 3.97 degrees of the Tower of Pisa.

Some of the most illustrious intellectuals of the past studied in Bologna, including: Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarca, Tommaso Becket, Paracelsus, Erasmus of Rotterdam, Niccolò Copernico and, in the musical field, Mozart, Verdi, Rossini, Wagner and Puccini.

Did you know who chose the colors of the Italian flag? Luigi Zamboni, an Italian patriot, who said: We join the white and red, the colors of our Bologna, with green, as a sign of the hope that all the Italian people will follow the national revolution we started..

Another travel tip if you are passionate about painting: visit the Basilica of San Martino, which over the centuries has been decorated by the greatest artists, who have made it a sort of art gallery.

The frieze L’incanto di Medea, a work by the Carracci at Palazzo Fava, is considered the first modern nude in the history of art.

It takes as many as 23 people to ring, in the “Bolognese style”, the bell mounted on top of the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Pietro. In the “Bolognese style” means in a cadenced way and with a complete rotation of the bell. The bell weighs 65 quintals!

Bologna was the only European city to absolve the Knights Templar, who were tortured and tried in all other major European cities.

The Italian Academy of Cuisine, together with the Tortellino Confraternity, has deposited the official size of tagliatelle in the medieval Palazzo della Mercanzia, which contains a golden sample of the tagliatelle, where the engraved inscription reads: 8 millimetres, size of the tagliatelle, 1972”. 8 millimeters corresponds to 12,270 parts of the height of the Asinelli Tower.

The Basilica of San Domenico, which was the court of the Inquisition, houses the tomb of Rolandino de' Passaggeri, a famous glossator. The glossators were jurists who, to make the ancient texts of Roman law clearer, added notes in the margins, called glossas. They were so respected in the city that their tombs, a unique case in Italy, were placed outdoors, in areas where they could be seen by everyone. Other examples can be found in Piazza Malpighi (Accursio, Odofredo and Rolandino de' Romanzi).

On the porticoes of Bologna: the porticoes in the thirteenth century were made of wood, and today it is still possible to observe them in their original guise in Casa Isolani in Strada Maggiore, Casa Grassi in via Marsala, Casa Azzoguidi in via San Nicolò and Casa Ramponesi in Via del Carro. The primacy of the largest portico goes to the fourteenth-century one of Santa Maria dei Servi in Strada Maggiore; the primacy of tallest is that of the Archdiocese building, in Via Altabella, with its almost 10 meters in height; the lowest is that of via Begatto, although each portico had to have the minimum height of a man on horseback. The longest arcades in the world are those of San Luca.

On the gates of Bologna:
- Porta San Vitale is known as the Porta per Ravenna, because a fundamental axis of the road to the ancient imperial capital started from here; it should be remembered that for centuries Bologna was part of the ecclesiastical province of the archdiocese of Ravenna.
- Porta Galliera could be called Porta della Rocca Ostile, due to its proximity to the Rocca di Galliera built several times and repeatedly demolished.
- Porta Lame is the Porta delle Acque, due to the presence of marshes and the port. In 1334 it was equipped with 2 drawbridges.
- Porta Saragozza could be called Sacred door or Pilgrims' door as it leads to the portico of San Luca.

Exploring Penang (Georgetown): Things To Do in One Day

After our trip to Langkawi, we headed to Georgetown, in Penang, Malaysia. One day we walked around and did all these things in a single day. More coming on:

Penang, Malaysia is an island just off the coast of the West Coast of Malaysia. It’s one of the most famous areas of Malaysia, especially known for its rich and diverse culture and for its food - many people come to Penang just to eat - as did I. Ying and I arrived to Penang from Langkawi, and we stayed in Penang for about a week, doing some work, and eating out way through the city. One day though, we decided to put on our shoes and go to visit as many of the attractions in the center of the city as we could. So this travel videos is an overview of the top things to do in Georgetown, Penang, but also a travel guide as well. Hope you enjoy to!

To begin the day, I started off with a Penang tourist map and located all the places we wanted to go. Since we were staying close to the Georgetown World Heritage Inc., that’s where we first decided to stop. It’s more of an information center, so after just a few minutes we continued on our way to the Chew Jetty, one of the couple of Chinese docks where homes are built over the water. On the way though, we walked through Lebuh Armenian (one of the most famous streets in Penang), past George Town street art, and also briefly stopped at Cheah Kongsi. The Chew Jetty was a nice place to walk around for a few minutes, there wasn’t a lot to do there, but mostly some small souvenir shops and some nice places to take photos.

We continued walking and passed the Queen Victory Lighthouse and then we continued on to Fort Cornwallis, a British built fort, and the only fort in Malaysia - though as they said it wasn’t ever used for battle. I was a little disappointed visiting Fort Cornwallis in Penang because we paid a pretty big entrance fee, but there really wasn’t anything to see inside - I could have seen it all from the outside. Anyway, we continued on walking around Penang, and then circled back past a cathedral. By this time we were getting quite hungry, so we headed into Little India, and then continued to a famous restaurant called Kapitan for tandoori chicken. I didn’t know they were really famous for their rice biryani, but I got a couple pieces of tandoori chicken and naan, it they were both incredible.

In the afternoon, we first stopped at the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang, and walked around for a few minutes, and then continued on to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, one of Penang’s main attractions and a place I was really looking forward to visiting. Mr. Cheong, an insanely wealthy Chinese business man built the Blue Mansion and it has now been restored and it’s actually open as a hotel, but they also give a couple of guided tours each day. The tour took 45 minutes, and it was beautiful to see. The only thing I wish is that we could have seen a little more of the Blue Mansion, because unfortunately we didn’t get to see much, but mostly listened to the history of the mansion - still it was worth seeing in Penang.

To finish of one day of things to do in Penang, Georgetown, we visited the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and then lastly we went to Khoo Kongsi. For dinner to end this day in Penang, we went to a restaurant to eat dim sum, and a few other Chinese dishes as well.

Thank you for watching this “things to do in Geogetown, Penang” travel video. Hope you enjoyed it, and hope it will give you some ideas for what to do when you visit. More Penang street food videos coming soon!

Immersive Walk in NORMANDY, in the 10 Best Spots in Trouville, Deauville, Honfleur

Hello and welcome to my new Travel Vlog in Normandy,
Thank you for watching this video. Please feel free to subscribe to my channel. Any like, comment or subscription would be of great support.

Today I am listing my favourite spots in Normandy, Calvados, exploring Trouville-Sur-Mer, Honfleur and Deauville, 3 famous harbour town with famous traditional food markets, pedestrian streets and old ports.
They are ideal cities for a day trip from Paris.
The ports and harbors are now home to numerous restaurants and shops, making it the ideal spot to grab lunch and do some relaxing afternoon shopping

00:00 : Intro
00:37 : Trouville-Sur-Mer Main Street
03:51 : Deauville Town Market
08:24 : Deauville Hotel Le Normandie
11:44 : Honfleur Town Market
17:20 : Trouville-Sur-Mer Hotel Les Cures Marines
18:16 : Trouville-Sur-Mer Town Market
22:13 : Deauville Marina Walk
23:38 : Honfleur Marina Walk
27:47 : Trouville-Sur-Mer Rue des Bains
29:09 : Trouville-Sur-Mer Fish Market

Honfleur is especially known for its old port, characterized by its houses with slate-covered frontages, painted frequently by artists. There have been many notable artists, including, Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Johan Jongkind, forming the école de Honfleur (Honfleur school) which contributed to the appearance of the Impressionist movement. The Sainte-Catherine church, which has a bell tower separate from the principal building, is the largest wooden church in France.

Trouville-sur-Mer borders Deauville across the River Touques. This fishing-village on the English Channel became a popular tourist attraction (beach-resort and holiday-destination) in Normandy from the 19th century. Its long sandy beach earned then the nickname of queen of the beaches (Reine des plages) or most beautiful beach in the world.
Close to Paris and easily accessible by train, Trouville (as well as neighbouring Deauville) earned the nickname of 21st Arrondissements of Paris.

Deauville is one of the most prestigious seaside resorts in all of France and the closest beach town from Paris. As the closest seaside resort to Paris, the city and its region of the Côte Fleurie (Flowery Coast) has long been home to French high society's seaside houses and is often referred to as the Parisian riviera.
The Deauville market wakes up under its beautiful half-timbered halls and open air on the Place du Marché (near the Place Morny). It is a real traditional market, full of colors and smells. You can walk around with a basket in your hand, as you please, looking at the stalls full of beautiful multicolored goods. From stall to stall, you can concoct the most delicious menu with excellent products, many of which are brought by local producers, and fill up on local specialties. From the fish directly from the boat, to the shellfish, the poultry, the cheeses, the fruits, the vegetables, the spices, the local ham... everything is fresh, appetizing and appealing. You can also find flowers, linen, clothes, books, hats, costume jewelry, in short, everything you need to have a little fun...
