Even though Providence is often overlooked as larger nearby urban epicenters like New York City and Boston are more often associated with tourism, it's still an excellent city to visit. It's a city that's got a lot going for it. Not only is it the state capital and largest city in Rhode Island, but it's also the third-largest city in New England.

At one time, it was a major hub for both industry and organized criminal activity, but over the years, the city has experienced a bit of a renaissance of sorts. These days the addition of parks, museums, restaurants, bars, clubs, and a variety of other attractions have helped the city to reconnect with it's roots while paving a way forward to the future. The Providence of today bears very little semblance to the one of a hundred years ago, but even so, it's done a good job at preserving its history and architecture in such a way that it still holds some of its original charm and soul.

The majority of Providence's attractions can be found in four distinct neighborhoods. Downcity encompasses the core of the downtown region as well as Waterplace Park, Capitol Hill, and Providence Place Mall.

Federal Hill is a neighborhood due west of downtown and runs along Atwells Avenue. There you will find a vibrant nightlife scene and some of the best Italian cuisines in the city.

College Hill, or The East Side as it is sometimes called, features some of the city's oldest and historically significant homes and architecture. It's also home of Brown University as well as the Rhode Island School of Design. The area is also known for its eclectic shops, restaurants, and lively urban culture.

South Providence has developed a pretty nasty reputation over the decades. It's a neighborhood that has historically been impoverished and crime-laden, but just like any urban setting, as long as you navigate the neighborhood with a little bit of caution, you'll find that it's a great place to go to get away from all of the hustle and bustle of downtown. There are plenty of restaurants, hair salons, banks, pharmacies, supermarkets, and libraries in this area, and downtown is just a quick 15-minute drive away.

In this video, we'll be taking a look at some of the attractions and sights worth checking out next time you're in town. Providence might not be a New York or LA, but it still offers many attractions and destinations worth exploring and visiting.

A walking tour of Federal Hill in Providence, Rhode Island

For more than a century, Federal Hill has been the center of Italian-American culture in Rhode Island. Known locally as The Hill, this culinary hub is home to some of the most storied dining establishments in the Northeast. Atwells Avenue is the main drag. It starts at Broadway, across the street from the Hilton Providence, and continues across Route 6 before merging with Manton Avenue.

The majority of the destination restaurants and specialty stores in Federal Hill are located along Atwells, between Bradford and America Streets. The basil, mozzarella and tomato colors of the Italian flag are painted into this bustling thoroughfare, which is closed to motor vehicles on Friday and Saturday evenings during the summer for Al Fresco on the Hill. There are also some notable bakeries and pizzerias along Spruce, which overlooks the Huntington Expressway.

map of Rhode Island

Rhode Island (/ˌroʊd -/ (audio speaker iconlisten), like road), officially the State of Rhode Island, is a state in the New England region of the Northeastern United States. It is the smallest U.S. state by area and the seventh-least populous, with slightly fewer than 1.1 million residents as of 2020,[9] but it is the second-most densely populated after New Jersey. It takes its name from the eponymous island, though most of its land area is on the mainland. Rhode Island borders Connecticut to the west, Massachusetts to the north and east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south via Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound; it also shares a small maritime border with New York. Providence is its capital and most populous city.

Native Americans lived around Narragansett Bay for thousands of years before English settlers began arriving in the early 17th century. Rhode Island was unique among the Thirteen British Colonies for being founded by a refugee, Roger Williams, who fled religious persecution from the Massachusetts Bay Colony to establish a haven for religious liberty. He founded Providence in 1636 on land purchased from local tribes, creating the first settlement in North America with an explicitly secular government. The Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations subsequently became a destination for religious and political dissenters and social outcasts, earning it the moniker Rogue's Island.

Reflecting its status as a hub of relative tolerance and free thought, Rhode Island was the first colony to call for a Continental Congress in 1774 and the first to renounce its allegiance to the British Crown on May 4, 1776. After the American Revolution, during which it was heavily occupied and contested, Rhode Island became the fourth state to ratify the Articles of Confederation on February 9, 1778. Favoring a weaker central government, it boycotted the 1787 convention that drafted the United States Constitution, which it initially refused to ratify; it was the last of the original 13 states to do so, on May 29, 1790.

Formerly named the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations since the colonial era, in November 2020 the state's voters approved an amendment to the state constitution formally dropping and Providence Plantations from its full name. Its official nickname is the Ocean State, a reference to its 400 miles (640 km) of coastline and the large bays and inlets that comprise about 14% of its total area. Rhode Island is divided into five counties but it has no county governments. The entire state is divided into municipalities, which handle all local government affairs.

There are 39 cities and towns in Rhode Island. Major population centers today result from historical factors; development took place predominantly along the Blackstone, Seekonk, and Providence Rivers with the advent of the water-powered mill. Providence is the base of a large metropolitan area.

The state's 18 largest municipalities ranked by population are :

Providence (180,393)
Warwick (82,672)
Cranston (80,387)
Pawtucket (72,001)
East Providence (47,600)
Woonsocket (41,759)
Coventry (34,933)
Cumberland (34,927)
North Providence (32,511)
South Kingstown (30,788)
Johnston (29,332)
West Warwick (28,626)
North Kingstown (26,160)
Newport (24,942)
Westerly (22,567)
Bristol (22,290)
Lincoln (21,863)
Smithfield (21,767)
Some of Rhode Island's cities and towns are further partitioned into villages, in common with many other New England states. Notable villages include Kingston in the town of South Kingstown, which houses the University of Rhode Island; Wickford in the town of North Kingstown, the site of an annual international art festival; and Wakefield where the Town Hall is for the Town of South Kingstown.
