Corsham Court is an English country house in a park designed by Capability Brown. It is in the town of Corsham, 3 miles (5 km) west of Chippenham, Wiltshire, and is notable for its fine art collection, based on the nucleus of paintings inherited in 1757 by Paul Methuen from his uncle, Sir Paul Methuen, the diplomat. It is currently the home of the present Baron Methuen, James Methuen-Campbell, the eighth generation of the Methuens to live there.
Corsham was a royal manor in the days of the Saxon kings, reputed to have been a seat of Ethelred the Unready. After William the Conqueror, the manor continued to be passed down through the generations in the royal family. It often formed part of the dower of the Queens of England during the late 14th and early 15th centuries, becoming known as Corsham Reginae. During the 16th century, the manor went to two of Henry VIII's wives, namely Catherine of Aragon until 1536, and Katherine Parr until 1548.
During the reign of Elizabeth I the estate passed out of the royal family; the present house was built in 1582 by Thomas Smythe. The owner of Corsham Court in the mid-seventeenth century was the commander of the Parliamentarian New Model Army in Wiltshire; his wife, Lady Margaret Hungerford, built what came to be known as the Hungerford Almshouses in the centre of town.
An entrance archway was built to the south of the house c. 1700–20. The arch, in baroque style. is flanked by massive ashlar piers with ball finials.

It has been suggested that the town had been known as Corsham Regis due to its reputed association with Anglo-Saxon Ethelred of Wessex and this name remains as that of one of the local primary school.

If you're a fan of Poldark (who isn't?), you need to visit Great Chalfield Manor which is a National Trust property. And when it comes to quintessential English villages/towns, you will instantly fall in love with Bradford on Avon and Castle Combe. Did you know that Castle Combe has the most romantic hotel too? If you want to book a very special stay, I think The Manor House is perfect. Makes you think of the film The Holiday. I can already picture Amanda and Graham.

Chippenham is a historic market town in Wiltshire, England, 13 miles east of Bath and 96 miles west of London. Chippenham was established on a crossing of the River Avon and some form of settlement is believed to have existed there since before Roman times. Chippenham was a royal vill, and probably a royal hunting lodge, under Alfred the Great. The primary school, King's Lodge School, gets its name from this tradition.
Chippenham continued to grow when the Great Western Railway arrived in 1841. The town of Chippenham is now a commuter town. Chippenham is twinned with La Flèche in France and Friedberg in Germany. The town's motto is Unity and Loyalty.
Chippenham is in western Wiltshire, at a prominent crossing of the River Avon, between the Marlborough Downs to the east, the southern Cotswolds to the north and west and Salisbury Plain to the southeast. The town of Chippenham is surrounded by sparsely populated countryside and there are several woodlands in or very near the town, such as Bird's Marsh, Vincients Wood and Briars Wood.
Suburbs include Cepen Park (North & South), Hardenhuish, Monkton, Lowden, Pewsham, Primrose Hill, Englands, Frogwell, Derriads, The Folly, Redland, Queens Crescent, Lackham, Fenway Park, and Hill Rise, loosely corresponding to local government wards. Chippenham lies 4 miles south of the M4 motorway, which links the town to Bristol, Swindon, South Wales and London.
Chippenham railway station is on the Great Western Main Line and is served by services between London Paddington and the West Country via Bristol Temple Meads or Swindon, and is famous for its railway arches and other buildings engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel as part of the Great Western Railway development. Historically a market town, Chippenham's economy has since changed to that of a commuter town with residents travelling to workplaces in Bath, Bristol, Swindon and even London (almost 100 miles to the east).
Surrounding the town are a number of stone-built villages, including Lacock (National Trust), Biddestone, Bremhill, and Castle Combe. The great house and art treasures of Longleat, Bowood House, Lacock Abbey, Sheldon Manor and Corsham Court are within easy reach. Chippenham Museum and Heritage Centre is in the town centre and tells the story of the market town.

Corsham is a historic market town and civil parish in west Wiltshire, England. It is at the south-western edge of the Cotswolds, just off the A4 national route, which was formerly the main turnpike road from London to Bristol, 28 miles (45 km) southwest of Swindon, 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Bristol, 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Bath and 4 miles (6 km) southwest of Chippenham. Corsham is close to the county borders with Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
Corsham was historically a centre for agriculture and later, the wool industry, and remains a focus for quarrying Bath Stone. It contains several notable historic buildings, such as the stately home of Corsham Court. During the Second World War and the Cold War, it became a major administrative and manufacturing centre for the Ministry of Defence, with numerous establishments both above ground and in the old quarry tunnels. The early 21st century saw growth in Corsham's role in the film industry. The parish includes the villages of Gastard and Neston, which is at the gates of the Neston Park estate.
Corsham appears to derive its name from Cosa's hām, ham being Old English for homestead, or village. The town is referred in the Domesday book as Cosseham; the letter 'R' appears to have entered the name later under Norman influence (possibly caused by the recording of local pronunciation), when the town is reported to have been in the possession of the Earl of Cornwall. Corsham is recorded as Coseham in 1001, as Cosseha in 1086, and at Cosham as late as 1611 (on John Speed's map of Wiltshire). The Corsham area belonged to the King in Saxon times, the area at the time also had a large forest which was cleared to make way for further expansion.
Corsham's small town centre includes the Martingate Centre, a late 20th-century retail development, which also houses offices and a small teaching facility for Wiltshire College, a further education institution. The stately home of Corsham Court can also be found in the town centre. Standing on a former Saxon Royal Manor, it is based on an Elizabethan manor home from 1582. Since 1745, it has been part of the Methuen estate. The house has an extensive collection of Old Masters, rooms furnished by Robert Adam and Thomas Chippendale, and parks landscaped by Capability Brown and Humphry Repton. The house is open to the public all year round excluding December and is famed locally for its peacocks, which freely wander about the streets. The owner of Corsham Court in the mid-seventeenth century was the commander of the Parliamentarian New Model Army in Wiltshire; his wife built what came to be known as the Hungerford Almshouses in the centre of town. Corsham is the site of the disused entrance to Tunnel Quarry, which used to be visible off Pockeridge Drive.
Pickwick Manor was noted by architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner as an unusually impressive example of a late 17th century manor house, having remnants of a 14th-century wing. Beechfield is a late Georgian house in Middlewick Lane. It was extended in the early 1970s to provide additional accommodation. Gurneys House is another building of historical significance which now provides hotel accommodation and a restaurant. It also caters for special events such as weddings.
Middlewick House was occupied by Camilla Parker Bowles (now The Duchess of Cornwall) and her first husband between 1986 and 1995, when it was bought by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd. Pickwick has the Two Pigs, a real ale pub which is a Grade II listed building. Hartham Park is a Georgian estate that includes a rare stické court.
Corsham is connected to Bradford on Avon by the B3109 road, to Melksham by the B3353, and to Chippenham and Bath by the A4 Bath Road, a former turnpike from London to Bristol. CORSHAM, Wiltshire: A Quiet Historical Town Centre Full of Charm
Corsham is situated in the county of Wiltshire sitting between its larger neighbours of Bath and Chippenham. The geographic position of Corsham is in the South West region, the town also borders the Cotswolds. Corsham has no train station, so for my journey here I caught a bus from Chippenham.
The town is small and easy to walk around as the terrain is flat. Corsham has plenty of Georgian buildings on show. The main attraction is Corsham Court, which is open to the public a few days a week.

Corsham Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Wiltshire, and around nine miles east, and slightly north, of Bath, is the town of Corsham.
The town's name is derived from Old English 'Cossa' and 'hām', meaning 'Cossa's homestead', where Cossa was the name of a Saxon settler. Corsham thrived during the medieval era due to the wool trade. This was aided by the immigration of Flemish weavers from the 14th to 16th century. They settled in various towns in England, including Corsham, as a result of an order by Edward III in 1337 to stop wool exports to Flanders and ban imports of woollen products. The houses seen from around minutes 12 to 14 are known as the 'Flemish Weavers' Houses' as it is reputed that this was the heart of the cottage industry for the wool trade.
Corsham's wool trade declined with the onset of the Industrial Revolution as nearby Wiltshire towns like Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon were able to use their respective rivers to power their textile mills. These in turn were displaced by the larger factories in the north and midlands that were connected to the canal network of Georgian England. Corsham, however, developed an alternative industry in the form of stone quarrying. These were put to use on a number of projects, perhaps most notably at the Box Tunnel. This forms part of Brunel's Great Western Railway Route from London to Bristol (and later to Cornwall and South Wales). Situated beneath Box Hill between Chippenham and Bath, it was the longest railway tunnel in the world at the time of its completion in 1841.
In 1582 Corsham Court was built for Thomas Smythe, a collector of customs duties during the Elizabethan era. This country house is located just off the high street, featured towards the end of the walk. Since the 18th century it has been owned by the Methuen family for eight generations up to the present. It is also home to a number of peacocks which can sometimes be seen roaming freely on the streets of Corsham town centre! (although sadly not in this video)
In 1841 a railway station opened in Corsham. This was situated between Chippenham and Bath on the Great Western Main Line. In 1965 it was closed as part of the Beeching Cuts, which was a controversial move to promote motorway travel by closing over 2,000 railway stations across Britain. Today, public transport to Corsham consists of bus services from Bath, Chippenham, Trowbridge and various local towns and villages. It can also be reached via National Express from London.
Due to the high concentration of 17th and 18th century buildings, Corsham has often been used for location filming for period dramas. Perhaps the most notable example is the BBC adaptation of Poldark where it was used for some of the outdoor town scenes. The series is set in 18th century Cornwall.

Corsham Court has also been used as a period location in productions such as Barry Lyndon (1975), The Remains of the Day (1993), A Respectable Trade (1997) and Wives and Daughters (1999).

The Village Of Box In Wiltshire.
Box is a large village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, about 3 miles (5 km) west of Corsham and 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Bath. Besides the village of Box, the parish includes the villages of Ashley and Box Hill; Hazelbury manor; and the hamlets of Alcombe, Blue Vein, Chapel Plaister, Ditteridge, Henley, Kingsdown, Middlehill and Wadswick. To the east the parish includes much of Rudloe, formerly a hamlet but now a housing estate, and the defence establishments and related businesses on the site of RAF Rudloe Manor.
Occupation here dates back at least to Roman times. The area is known for its fine stone and for centuries Box quarries were famous for their product. Today Box is perhaps better known for its Brunel-designed Box railway tunnel.
Much of Box Village and the surrounding area is a Conservation Area and it falls within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty & West Wiltshire Green Belt.

Covid-19 caused us to cancel our holiday to Sorrento, so to make up for it, as soon as lockdown started to ease, we booked a week in Corsham in September. It was a real tonic to get away and life almost felt normal, apart from having less choice of cafes and restaurants and having to wear a mask every time we wanted to go in a shop! Hope you enjoy our visits to Bradford-on-Avon, Devizes, the Caen Hill Flight, Malmesbury, Chippenham, Bath, Lacock and Towbridge - a real Wiltshire adventure for us!

We have decided to explore Cotswolds being known as one of the most picturesque places in the UK. TBH, we did not pick the best time of the year as it was grey and very cold, but it has its own advantage. There is not many tourist, which we sometimes think is a bonus these day.
