Cuba Steam in Paradise 1999 part 5
Central Marcello Salado (428). The locos at this mill were always kept in a clean condition, it is therefore not a great surprise that this mill was chosen as a museum when steam haulage was eliminated from Cuba’s sugar mill systems. The road that runs alongside the railway is good for pacing shots of the Baldwin 2-6-0. Also in steam was a Baldwin 2-6-2ST saddle tank. Sadly not in steam was an Alco 2-8-0 resplendent is red livery recently rebuilt by the famous Argentine locomotive engineer L.D.Parta.

No apology for the six and three quarter minute sequence at Orlando Gonzáles Ramirez (503) of an Alco Cook 2-8-0 struggling along at walking pace into the gathering darkness with a heavy load of cane. The stills photographers had given up long before because of poor light but it was still possible to capture some decent video, especially the glow from the burners. A never to be repeated and never to be forgotten experience.
Central Rafael Freyre (635) was a favourite of many steam enthusiasts visiting Cuba. Hard worked narrow gauge locos and good scenery was worth the long journey to the east of the island. A 30” gauge Baldwin 2-8-0 is seen in action.

Cuba Steam in Paradise - Cuba 1999 Part 1
The phrase ‘Those were the days’ is often over used and the reality does not always live up to the memory. Cuba before the end of steam haulage on sugar mill lines was in many ways ‘Paradise’ An interesting variety of locos some over 100 yeas old, most were well maintained and reliable, all were worked hard, sometimes with heavy trains. The narrow gauge locos seemed to be worked hardest of all resulting in some spectacular sounds. During the cane season the weather was perfect and the night life…
In 1999 I visited 25 mills in Cuba with a small group called ‘Steam in Paradise’ run by Andy Clark and the late Ron Lingley.
Central Rubén Martinez Villena (211) had a Spanish colonial style office building sporting twin domes. Working at this standard gauge mill were a rare for Cuba 2-6-2T tank built, 1904 by Baldwin and a Baldwin 2-8-0 built 1920.
A few miles from R.M.Villena is Central Boris Luis Santa Coloma (212). In use were Alco 2-6-0 built Schenectady Works, USA in 1910 and a Vulcan Iron Works 2-8-0 built 1918. About half way between the mills there is Roble crossing, protected by an elevated interlocking tower. Note the semaphore signals. This clip ends with a few shots of an East German cane cutting machine in action.

Central Ciudad Caracas (404), an Alco Cook moving in the mill yard.
The important town of Santa Clara in the centre of the island. The shops are typical of all over Cuba with very little for sale (except for a surplus of Tupperware pots!). Because of the shortage of new items, broken goods were not thrown away but repaired. Is there a lesson for us all here?
GM Bo-B0 diesel, a TEM-15K Co-Co and a TEM-2TK Co-Co diesel loco, both Russian built and a Budd RDC diesel railcar.
A Baldwin 2-8-0 passes a signal box on stilts near Guareiras station and a locally built Taino railbus.
At Central Reynold Garcia (302) a Vulcan Iron Works 2-6-0 is briefly seen hauling a train of hopper wagons, probably containing raw sugar.
To conclude the video yet another Baldwin 2-8-0 is working on the Central Granma (304) system.

CAI Ecuador, standatd gauge: A derailment occurred on a curve possibly caused by the loco crew 'putting on a show' for the photographers.
CAI Orlando Gonzalez Ramirez commonly called OGR, standard gauge, This mill had a section of line running down the main street of the village.
This video also contains scenes shot in Santa Clara including the busy level crossing.
