Territory

Guam is a U.S. island territory in Micronesia, in the Western Pacific. It's distinguished by tropical beaches, Chamorro villages, and ancient latte-stone pillars.

Guam’s WWII significance is on view at the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, whose sites include Asan Beach, a former battlefield. The island’s Spanish colonial heritage is evident in Fort Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, atop a bluff in Umatac.

Haganta, Guam Island 4K View #Haganta #Guam #Tour #travel #traveling #usa #america #island

Hagåtña Chamorro pronunciation formerly in English: Agana, in Spanish: Agaña is the capital village of the United States territory of Guam. From the 18th through mid-20th century, it was Guam's population center, but today it is the second smallest of the island's 19 villages in both area and population. However, it remains one of the island's major commercial districts in addition to being the seat of government.
______________________________

HISTORY
__________________
Hagåtña was a prominent village before Guam's colonization by the Spanish. In 1668, the first Spanish missionary, Padre San Vitores arrived on the island. The family of Chief Kepuha donated land in Hagåtña enabling San Vitores to build the first church (Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica) on Guam.

Under Spanish rule, much of the indigenous population of Guam and other Mariana Islands was forced to relocate to the city. The remains of buildings from the Spanish administration can be seen in the Plaza de España located beside the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Agana. The remains of the Spanish Governor's Palace is here and is closer to the Department of Education than the Cathedral.

After Guam was ceded by Spain to the United States in the Spanish–American War of 1898, 'Agana' remained the seat of government under U.S. Naval Administration. By 1940, the city's population had grown to about 10,000 containing nearly half of the island's residents. Villages had been established nearby for immigrants from the Caroline Islands.

Guam was captured by Japanese forces on December 8, 1941. The Japanese, renamed Guam Ōmiya-jima (ja.: 大宮島) or Great Shrine Island, and Agana Akashi (ja.: 明石) or Red or Bright Stone. During Guam's 1944 liberation from the Japanese during World War II, the city was heavily damaged by U.S. naval bombardment. Many former residents settled in other parts of Guam after the war. As part of Guam's reconstruction plan, the U.S. Navy constructed new straight city streets that passed through existing lots and created many plots of land with multiple owners. This has hindered the development of the city to the present day. In December 1944 Guam was the scene of the Agana race riot, between black and white servicemen stationed on the island.

Today, despite a resident population of only 1,100 (less than 1% of Guam's total), the city remains the seat of the territorial government. Its historic sites are major attractions for visitors. Hagåtña is served by Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport in Tamuning and Barrigada.

Culture
_________________________

As Guam's historic population and administrative center, many traditional celebrations take place in Hagåtña. On December 8, Santa Marian Kamalen, Patroness of the Mariana Islands, is honored with a procession in which a statue of the patroness is pulled on a cart amid the prayers of thousands of the island's Catholics.[7] Guam's most celebrated patriotic holiday, Liberation Day, is on July 21. The annual Liberation Day Parade takes place on Marine Corps Drive in Hagåtña. In addition to the historic sites at the Plaza de España and the Basilica, Latte Stone Park and the Chamorro Village shopping area offer further information about the island's history and culture.

0:46 Location - Where is Guam? We're a little island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, within the vicinity of Australia, Hawaii, the Philippine Islands, and Japan. It's very easy to travel from here to other parts of Southeast Asia.

1:34 Size - 30 miles long, about 210 sq. miles. As of 2021, its population is roughly 168,000. From personal experience, you could drive around the entire island in about 2 hours, which means commute from home to workplace is never more than 30-40 minutes.

2:10 Weather - It is consistently humid on Guam. Summertime is when the warmer temperatures are felt with highs between 88-91 degrees F and lows between 77-80 degrees F. You WILL sweat so dress light! Cooler temperatures in the 70s occur during the months of November to January/mid-February.

2:50 Religion - Guam is a predominantly Catholic community, but there are other smaller church groups such as Baptist, Mormon, Seventh Day Adventist, Methodist, etc. that exist.

3:09 Schools - There are 27 public Elementary Schools, 8 public Middle Schools, 6 public High Schools, and about 13-14 private schools that house a variety of grade levels. The two college level schools present are the University of Guam and the Guam Community College. Guam colleges are highly recommended if you want to pursue a degree in Marine Biology.

3:38 Military on Guam - There are two main military installations, one being Andersen Air Force Base in Yigo and the other being Naval Base Guam (Big Navy) in Santa Rita. There are other smaller installations around the island like NCTS, Naval Magazine, Naval Hospital, etc. which means many federal job opportunities AND a high turnover cycle for military personnel and families stationed on Guam.

4:15 People - This mini melting pot is home to so many! Ranging from CHamorus, Filipinos, tourists, military, and other Micronesian Islanders, you're bound to meet people from so many backgrounds and ethnicities. DON'T mix up the CHamorus with chods/chauds. A true CHamoru will be very welcoming and hospitable to newcomers while a chod/chaud will be more closed off.

6:38 Where to stay - This is a broad statement because the bottomline is that you should definitely explore the different areas and villages IN PERSON. From a general description, the noisier, busier parts of Guam would be the villages of Dededo, Tumon, Tamuning, and sometimes east Agana. The quieter areas that are away from the hustle and bustle would be villages like Mangilao, Yona, Talofofo, Inarajan, Asan, Agat, Santa Rita, Umatac, and Merizo.

8:10 Different personal experiences - I'm not going to lie and say everyone has loved Guam; people have either loved their time here or they've hated it. However, it all depends on what YOU make of it. Are you going to stay at home the whole time and miss out on potential experiences and friendships, or are you someone that will explore the island and make an active effort to meet people and discover all the hidden gems Guam has to offer? It's really up to you when you get here.

Visiting a Chamaro village in Guam

Visiting a Chamaro village in Guam

We enjoyed touring Southern Guam with Jenny. We all learned so much from the tour at the Inalahan Cultural Village from making sea salt, rope, coconut candy to beautiful weavings. We even walked on the lathi stones, visited the old Spanish fort and went hiking in the mud.

The Valley of the Latte Adventure Park, Talofofo, Guam. Guam's 76th Liberation Day Celebration

The Valley of the Latte, nestled on the banks of the Talofofo River, represents thousands of years of Chamorro culture and history. The first signs of life have been carbon dated back to 206 BC. Fast-forward to 1944, a young soldier from the Japanese Imperial Army, Soichi Yokoi. Instead of surrendering to American Liberation Forces landing on Guam, he and two of his comrades sought refuge in the Talofofo and Bubulao Valley until their mother country would come and rescue them.

28 years later in 1972 Talofofo Residents Jose Duenas and Manuel Degracia capture one of the last surviving Japanese stragglers Soichi Yokoi and bring him to the Surfside Cafe for interrogation, the present day Valley of the Latte Giftshop.

The repatriation of Yokoi to his home country of Japan was a historic milestone for the island in connection to World War II.

Today, 76 years after the Liberation of Guam, the Talofofo River Valley, has become the iconic location where CHamoru culture and history is brought to life every single day and shared with visitors from Yigo to Japan, California to Korea, and many more throughout the world.

We strive to be the place chosen by the people of Guam to celebrate our culture and share the beauty of our island with all that visit.

We are honored to have our cultural practitioners share and celebrate with us on the land where our ancestors lived and flourished.

We are also honored to have our I Tao Tao Ta, our Military Brothers and Sisters, and all our International Guests share with us in the celebration of our 76th Liberation at the Valley of the Latte.

We have endured a World War and we are now faced with another global challenge wreaking havoc on our people. But we are strong and resilient and will overcome once more, all the challenges placed before us.

We are proud to be a part of the Talofofo and Southern Guam community.

Exploring Guam Fort Agueda

Exploring Guam Fort Agueda
Fort Santa Agueda, on Guam Highway 7 in Hagåtña (formerly Agana), Guam, dates from about 1800, during the 1784-1802 administration of Spanish governor Manuel Moro. It was an uncovered fort with a manposteria (coral stone and lime mortar) parapet, rising about 10 feet (3.0 m) above a sloping hillside. It is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, as the only remaining fortification of the Spanish Era in Hagåtña... Wiki

GUAM 2023 | A Day in Guam | Day 3

#guam #islandlife #travelvlog #guamlife

We took a trip back to Guam after 2 years of being away and had a great time! Here's a look at a day in the island life:

One of the main reasons we had made this recent trip back to Guam was for my sister Courtney’s wedding, so on this day we had a full day planned with her Bridal Shower brunch at the Tsubaki Tower and then her Bachelorette Party later in the evening.

After arriving at the Tsubaki Tower, we opted to get valet because it was too hot for me to find parking and then set up the stroller then walk Mila in the sun, all while in heels. This was the first time I had been to the hotel during the day, so it was definitely a treat to see the gorgeous view from the lobby. Guam definitely loves their buffets, and Tsubaki’s brunch buffet did not disappoint! It was a nice time with the ladies, including Baby Mila.

After brunch, we had made plans to stay in the Tumon area until my sister’s bachelorette party. We had reserved a hotel room at the Holiday Resort where we would prime up and play some games before heading out to the bars. I taught the girls some dice games, which got competitive real quick.

The first stop on Courtney’s wish list was Drop, which was only about a 10 min walk from the hotel. Drop mainly plays house and techno, which is actually one of my favorite genres to dance to. While out and about, I also ran into some of my friends which was so awesome. It’s always nice to see familiar faces! We then transferred over to the W which is basically right next door to Drop, and I ordered bottle service so that we could get a table that was roped off but still right next to the dance floor. It was pretty expensive, but hey anything for the bride-to-be! All in all, it was such a fun night and I’m so happy my sister had a great time with all her friends.
