Journey to Kaliningrad (Königsberg) Exclave - Russia's Outpost in Europe

Follow me on Patreon to see more: Patreon:

I'm taking you on a journey to Kaliningrad. Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave located on the Baltic Sea, sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania. It serves as a strategic outpost for Russia in Europe. Formerly part of East Prussia and known as Königsberg, it was annexed by the Soviet Union after World War II. Today, it remains a unique geopolitical entity, distinct from the Russian mainland. It provides Russia with access to the Baltic Sea and a presence in the European Union, which can influence regional dynamics and politics in the Baltic region.

In this video, I visit a number of settlements in Kaliningrad region with traces of German past. It could happen that some members of YOUR family lived in East Prussia before or soon after the annexation of Konigsberg. Write about this in the comments, it's fascinating to read such stories!

Enjoy the video!

RO LIVE: Балтийск. Калининградская область. Россия / Baltiysk - Pillau. Russia [2023]

map of Kaliningrad [ Russia ]

Kaliningrad , Russian: Калининград, IPA: [kəlʲɪnʲɪnˈɡrat]), until 1946 known as Königsberg (German pronunciation: [ˈkøːnɪksbɛʁk]; Russian: Кёнигсберг, tr. Kyonigsberg, IPA: [ˈkʲɵnʲɪɡzbʲɪrk]), is the largest city and the administrative centre of Kaliningrad Oblast, the westernmost oblast of Russia. The city is situated on the Pregolya River, at the head of the Vistula Lagoon on the Baltic Sea, and is the only ice-free port of Russia and the Baltic states on the Baltic Sea. Its population is 489,35 with up to 800,000 residents in the urban agglomeration. Kaliningrad is the second-largest city in the Northwestern Federal District, after Saint Petersburg, the third-largest city in the Baltic region, and the seventh-largest city on the Baltic Sea.

The settlement of modern-day Kaliningrad was founded in 1255 on the site of the ancient Old Prussian settlement Twangste by the Teutonic Knights during the Northern Crusades, and was named Königsberg in honor of King Ottokar II of Bohemia. A Baltic port city, it successively became the capital of the State of the Teutonic Order, the Duchy of Prussia (1525–1701) and East Prussia. Königsberg remained the coronation city of the Prussian monarchy, though the capital was moved to Berlin in 1701. From 1454 to 1455 the city under the name of Królewiec belonged to the Kingdom of Poland, and from 1466 to 1657 it was a Polish fief. Königsberg was the easternmost large city in Germany until World War II. The city was heavily damaged by Allied bombing in 1944 and during the Battle of Königsberg in 1945; it was then captured by the Soviet Union on 9 April 1945. The Potsdam Agreement of 1945 placed it under Soviet administration. The city was renamed to Kaliningrad in 1946 in honor of Soviet revolutionary Mikhail Kalinin. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it is governed as the administrative centre of Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast, an exclave sandwiched between Lithuania and Poland.

As a major transport hub, with sea and river ports, the city is home to the headquarters of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy, and is one of the largest industrial centres in Russia. It was recognized as the best city in Russia in 2012, 2013 and 2014 according to Kommersant's magazine The Firm's Secret, the best city in Russia for business in 2013 according to Forbes, and was ranked fifth in the Urban Environment Quality Index published by Minstroy in 2019. Kaliningrad has been a major internal migration attraction in Russia over the past two decades, and was one of the host cities of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Kaliningrad is at the mouth of the navigable Pregolya River, which empties into the Vistula Lagoon, an inlet of the Baltic Sea.

Sea vessels can access Gdańsk Bay/Bay of Danzig and the Baltic Sea by way of the Vistula Lagoon and the Strait of Baltiysk.

Until around 1900, ships drawing more than 2 meters (6 ft 7 in) of water could not pass the bar and come into town;[citation needed] larger vessels had to anchor at Pillau (now Baltiysk), where cargo was transferred to smaller vessels. In 1901, a ship canal between Königsberg and Pillau, completed at a cost of 13 million German marks,[citation needed] enabled vessels of a 6.5 m (21 ft 4 in) draught to moor alongside the town (see also Ports of the Baltic Sea).

Climate
Kaliningrad has a humid continental climate (Dfb or Cfb, depending on the isotherm chosen for class C climates), with cold, cloudy, (though moderate compared to most of Russia) winters and mild summers with frequent showers and thunderstorms. Average temperatures range from −1.5 to +18.1 °C (29.3 to 64.6 °F) and rainfall varies from 36.0 millimeters (1.42 in)/month to 97.0 millimeters (3.82 in)/month. In general, it has maritime climate (Cfb) influences and therefore damp, variable and mild, with vast temperature differences between July and January. mapa de Kaliningrado , karta rossii

HOW DOES KALININGRAD BECOME RUSSIAN

Hello, today you will find out HOW KALININGRAD BECAME RUSSIAN? Initially, Kaliningrad was called Konigsberg and was part of Germany. The city was founded in the thirteenth century by the Teutonic Knights. Earlier it was part of the territory of Russia, but it was repeatedly selected in other different ways. For example, in the middle of the eighteenth century, when the Seven Years' War ended. The eastern territory of Prussia and the city of Königsberg were accepted into Russia, but soon, under the terms of the peace agreement, they returned. How did the current Kaliningrad become Russian in the end? Everything was decided during the Second World War, when in 1949, Koenigsberg joined the Soviet Union. So the Germans paid dearly to the USSR when they surrendered. Kaliningrad was taken by assault by Soviet soldiers in April. The assault lasted four days, and the troops were led by Marshal Vasilevsky. Soon, the Potsdam Conference took place, during which Koenigsberg was finally annexed to the Soviet Union. Few people know, but initially, when the authorities wanted to give a new name to the city, the choice was between Baltiysk and Slavgrad. As a result, at this time, the famous politician Kalinin dies, after whom this city was named. After the end of the war, all remaining German residents who could not leave the city were deported to Germany. Already from the next year, the mass settlement of the city by Soviet people began. The city was dilapidated after the armed clashes, and some of the indigenous people remained in their homes. Soviet people often helped the Germans who were left to live in difficult conditions after difficult times. The reconstruction of Kaliningrad took a long time, but soon the city was turned by numerous efforts into a unique historical monument. MAP OF KALININGRAD

hello hello my friends. this is a map of kaliningrad. Kaliningrad is the only Russian Baltic Sea port that is ice-free all year round and hence plays an important role in the maintenance of the country's Baltic Fleet. As a semi-exclave of Russia, it is surrounded by Poland, Lithuania, and the Baltic Sea. Its largest river is the Pregolya. It starts as a confluence of the Instruch and the Angrapa and drains into the Baltic Sea through the Vistula Lagoon. Its length under the name of Pregolya is 123 km, and 292 km, including the Angrapa. Kaliningrad Oblast is the westernmost federal subject of Russia. It is a semi-exclave, and is situated on the Baltic Sea. The oblast's largest city and administrative center is the city of Kaliningrad, formerly known as Königsberg. Its port city of Baltiysk is Russia's only port on the Baltic Sea that remains ice-free in winter. Kaliningrad Oblast had a population of roughly 1 million in the Russian Census of 2010..

The oblast is bordered by Poland to the south, Lithuania to the north and east, and the Baltic Sea to the west. It is impossible to travel overland between the oblast and the main contiguous portion of Russia without passing through at least two other countries. The territory was formerly the northern part of the Prussian province of East Prussia, the southern part of which is today part of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Poland. With the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, the territory was annexed as part of the Russian SFSR by the Soviet Union. Following the post-war migration and flight and expulsion of Germans, the territory was populated with mostly Russians.

Notable geographical features include:

Curonian Lagoon (shared with Lithuania)..and the beautiful
Vistula Lagoon (shared with Poland)..thanks for listening. please subscribe for the best maps and for the love of kaliningrad.
