Seoul Walk: Bongeunsa Station to Seonjeongneung Station

This walk starts among a cluster of famous and popular sites in the Gangnam District of southern Seoul, including a 1300-year-old Buddhist temple, then follows a straight path along a road that transitions into a relatively average and mundane Seoul neighborhood.
Bongeunsa-ro is a street that runs parallel to the larger and more well-known Teheranno a block to the south. A plot of land that stretches between the two streets where both streets meet the busy Yeongdong-daero is home to the World Trade Center Seoul, a complex comprised of two branches of the Intercontinental Hotel chain, three office towers (Parnas, Trade, and ASEM), the City Air Terminal, the COEX Convention and Exhibition Center, the Oakwood Premiere managed residences, and the Starfield COEX Mall. And just across Bongeunsa-ro, north of the WTC complex, sits Bongeunsa Temple, a 1300-year-old counter to the modernity that surrounds it.
We begin our walk at Gate 7 of Bongeunsa Station, a stop on Seoul Subway Line 9. The escalator takes us to a set of doors that open onto ASEM Plaza, were we find a handful of cafes and restaurants, and two entrances to the Starfield COEX Mall. The base of ASEM Tower can be seen above, just beyond the fruit and vegetable tree.
We head west out of the gate and climb a set of stairs that take us to the WTC complex, where we get a better view of ASEM Tower and the COEX before moving onto the sidewalk alongside Bongeunsa-ro. This carries us by Bongeunsa Temple across the street, of which we get but a glimpse as we pass. Then we see the COEX Intercontinental before crossing Teheran-ro 87-gil, as road that connects with Teheranno to the south, and putting the WTC complex in our rear view.
It's here that our walk enters into the mundane (just the sort of area through which I enjoy walking the most). The average Gangnam neighborhood is a mix of commercial and residential: office buildings, store fronts, small three- or four-floor apartment buildings (called villas in Korea), large box apartments, a smattering of love motels and large hotels. These are the kinds of buildings that comprise the rest of our walk as we pass Samseong Jungang Station and wrap up at Seonjeongneung Station.
One thing of note in the area, though mostly out of sight. is the namesake of our walk's terminus: Seonjeonneung. This is a park which is the site of the tombs of two kings and one queen from the Joseon Dynasty (1392 - 1897). We can get a glimpse of the trees of Seonjeongneung at the ends of the side streets just before we reach the end of the walk (20:44, 21:47, 24:38). There is only one entrance to the park, located on the south side. When planning a visit, Gate 10 of Seolleung Station (named for one of the tombs) on Teheranno is a short walk from the entrance. There's a small entrance fee, but it's a calm, relaxing green space to take a break from the bustle of the city.

밀림 한 가운데 불쑥 솟아있는 거대한 바위산 시기리야. 입구를 지나 걷다보면 시기리야가 한눈에 들어온다. 그리고 문득 이런 생각이 든다. ‘어떻게 저 위에 도시가 세워졌을까?’ “시기리야는 카사파 왕에 의해 만들어진 곳이에요. 그리고 카사파 왕이 저 위에 숨어있던 곳이기도 하죠. 그래서 보러왔어요” 아버지를 살해하고 왕이 된 카사파왕은 동생의 복수가 두려워 높이 370미터에 이르는 저 거대한 바위산 위로 숨어 든다. 가는 길에는 당시에 그려진 벽화가 있다. 그 벽화를 보기 위해 올라가는데 이곳도 촬영불가란다. “사진 찍으면 안 돼요” 총 21명의 여인상이 그려져 있다는데 찍지 못한다. “1600년 전에 카사파 왕에 의해 만들어졌다는데 그 여인들의 그림은 정말 아름다웠어요” 사자 산 이라는 뜻을 가진 시기리야. 이름에 걸맞게 입구에서는 거대한 사자 발이 위엄 넘치게 뻗쳐있다. “시기리야는 사자의 양쪽 발 사이로 올라가는데 마치 사자의 입 속으로 들어가는 느낌을 받게 했다고 합니다” 내가 찾은 날은 사람이 너무 많아 1시간 반을 기다려 올라갈 수 있었다. 가파른 계단을 올라가며 발아래를 보니 어질어질하다. 스리파다에 이어 또 다시 오른다. 살 빠지는 소리가 들리는 스리랑카 여행이다. 드디어 눈앞에 1600년 전 세워진 고대 도시가 펼쳐진다. 지금은 왕궁터 밖에 남아있지 않지만 상상했던 것보다 훨씬 넓어 보인다. 이 위에서 세상을 내려다보며 왕은 어떤 생각을 했을까? “정상에 서니 마치 세상을 지배하는 느낌이에요. 지평선에 둘러싸여 있어서 정말 아름다워요. 여러분들도 여기 와서 꼭 보셔야 해요”
