A GREEN SAHARA? - සහරා කාන්තාරයේ සැගවුණු රහසක් හෙළිවෙයි

The Sahara desert is known today as a vast, arid plain that is exposed to punishing temperatures and little rainfall.
But just a few thousand years ago it was grassy and dotted with lakes.
One archaeologist is now suggesting that humans triggered the desert's dramatic transformation, claiming that crop farmers set off a chain of events that pushed the area to its current dry and barren state.
The Sahara's luscious green pastures began to dry up around the time that humans moved into the area 8,000 years ago, bringing agriculture with them.
Within 1,000 years it had morphed into the arid desert seen today.
Dr David Wright of Seoul National University has claimed that crop farmers provoked this change.
His research suggests that as human communities spread through the region they warped the landscape to accommodate crops and livestock.
Crop farmers grew species of plants that left the Saharan soil exposed.
They also brought livestock that ate the vegetation, further uncovering the soil.
As sunlight reflected off the exposed soil it warmed the Saharan air.
As more farmers moved into the region, more soil was uncovered, leading to further warming of the air.
This reduced rainfall and created weather conditions ideal for scrub vegetation.
Eventually rainfall virtually vanished, killing off much of the Sahara's plantlife and leaving behind only a few hardy desert plants, Dr Wright claims.

Sharing his name with the ruler of Prussia from 1740-1786, the highly acclaimed horse has a muscular build, striking black features and flowing mane.
The beautiful stallion is owned by Pinnacle Friesians where he stands at stud in the Ozark Mountains in the US.
With a Facebook fan page of more than 12,500 followers and a blog to his name, the stunning stallion has amassed quite a hefty fan following.
So popular is the horse that an online gallery featuring artwork of him has been created.
A breathtaking video shot recently shows Frederik galloping freely, with his long black mane billowing in the wind.

The mountain lion goes by many names, including cougar, catamount, panther, red tiger, deer tiger, and puma. This cat can be found throughout much of South and North America.
The mountain lion used to be found all over the United States, but now is primarily seen in the western U.S. An endangered subspecies of mountain lion also remains in Florida. These felines are comfortable in many different habitats and, aside from humans, have the widest geographic range of any land mammal in the Western Hemisphere.
In North America, mountain lions eat mainly deer, but they also eat smaller animals, such as mice and rabbits. These cats have a poor sense of smell, but have excellent vision and hearing that help them hunt in the early morning and evening hours. Their powerful hind legs enable them to jump as far as 40 to 45 feet (12 to 13 meters).

Up until August 2006, the tallest known tree in the world was a 369-foot California redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) nicknamed ‘Stratosphere Giant’, located somewhere in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park in California. To give you some idea about its massive size, that’s twice the height of the Statue of Liberty, minus the foundation.
But the Giant lost its status when two naturalists, Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor, stumbled upon group of trees in California’s Redwood National Park that were taller than any they’d ever seen before. They made preliminary measurements using professional laser equipment based on goniometry, and found not one, not two, but three trees that were taller than the Stratosphere Giant.
The tallest of the lot, named Hyperion, was found to be a good 10ft taller than the Giant, standing at a whopping a 379 ft. When Atkins and Taylor announced their discovery, a team of scientists led by Humboldt State University ecologist Steve Sillett arrived at the park to measure it again in September 2006. They were aiming for more accuracy, so they actually used a tape this time. They actually climbed to its very top and dropped the tape to the ground. The epic stunt was filmed for National Geographic.

According to some of the locals, Baobab trees were planted in Hollywood Between 1930 - 1940 but no one seems to know how they originated in Hollywood. One theory is that seeds or seedlings could have been obtained from Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens in Miami. Doctor David Fairchild was the first to discover the Baobab in West Africa circa 1927 and trees were planted at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens in the late 1930’s. Other locals believe that the Wray family, founders of Flamingo Gardens in Davie Florida may have planted the trees.
It is reported, but I have not yet confirmed, that a Baobab tree still stands in Dania at the intersection of US1 and Griffin Road. Somehow this Baobab survived removal by the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood Airport runway expansion. It is commonly agreed that Commodore Auylan Harcourt Brook an advertising executive who promoted Florida Tourism circa 1920’s planted a Banyan Tree at that location and the tree grew to reach a height of 160 feet. He also planted the Baobab tree that survives today on the site.
Baobab trees can be found growing in Coral Gables, Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens and you can also find one at Yesteryear Village at the South Florida Fairgrounds in West Palm Beach. It is unclear as of this writing if the Baobab Tree at Yesteryear Village was donated by a landowner in Loxahatchee, Florida. Twenty seven years is not a joke. In 27 years, almost three decades, the face of the world could change drastically. In these years, a kid grows up into a man/woman and many more things can happen during the period.
Imagine if someone dedicates 27 years of his life in just digging up a pond. Astonishing, isn't it? What more can we say about Shyam Lal, a native of Saja Pahad village in Chhattisgarh's Koriya district, who spent 27 years of his life digging up the parched land of his village to find a pond out of it.
Finally, his long-drawn lonely battle to find water succeeded after 27 years. When Shyam first started his journey of digging up the pond he was just 15 years old.
Today, the man hailed as a hero by his village men and even local politicians and officials is 42. But Shyam has no qualms of losing so many precious years of his life just digging up a pond. Rather he is ecstatic that his firm belief to find water in a forest land nearby his dry village proved to be right.
As a teenager Shyam decided to undertake the task after he saw his village people badly struggling for water to quench their thirst and that of the animals. No government officials did anything about the matter.
So, one day, the tribal boy decided to take up a spade and dig for water in a nearby forest area. His initiative was not initially approved by his fellow villagers. They thought he has gone crazy to take up such a herculean task.
But, the boy was a determined one. Although it took 27 years, none the less Shyam succeeded in his one-man mission. The villager gave Saja Pahad a 15-feet deep pond, spread across one-acre of land, full of water. AUS $
