This is most likely the oldest and still in use bridge in Indian sub continet. That's why I used the term oldest but still alive bridge in India. In British Raj English Government wanted to build a new bridge on the same place by demolishing it because GT road reconstruction was going. A canal that originates from holy river Yamuna was also flowing under it and this bridge was on original GT road. Finally British were unable to demolish it changed the course GT road. That's why Original GT road is slightly farther from this old bridge.

पुल का निर्माण 1894 में शुरू हुआ था और 1896 में पूरा हुआ था। यह 18 दिसंबर 1896 को बंगाल और उत्तर पश्चिम रेलवे के जारवाल रोड - बेहरामघाट खंड के उद्घाटन के साथ मीटर गेज ट्रैक के साथ खोला गया था । पुल का नाम लॉर्ड एल्गिन , भारत के गवर्नर-जनरल (21 मार्च 1862 - 20 नवंबर 1863) के नाम पर रखा गया है। एल्गिन ब्रिज के निर्माण से पहले और गोंडा और बाराबंकी के बीच रेलवे के खुलने से ज्यादातर व्यापार नदी मार्ग से होता था, एक बार पुल बनने के बाद नदी का व्यापार बहुत कम हो गया।1987/88 में गेज परिवर्तन के लिए पुल को बंद कर दिया गया था और बाद में 1989/90 में ब्रॉड गेज के साथ फिर से खोला गया थारास्ता। लखनऊ - गोरखपुर रेलवे मेनलाइन के दोहरीकरण के दौरान 2010/11 को एल्गिन ब्रिज के समानांतर एक और पुल का निर्माण किया गया और खोला गया।
The bridge construction started in 1894 & was completed in 1896. It was opened on 18 December 1896 having Meter Gauge track with the opening of Jarwal Road - Behramghat section of the Bengal and North Western Railway.The bridge is named after Lord Elgin, Governor-General of India (21 March 1862 – 20 November 1863). Before construction of Elgin Bridge and opening of railways between Gonda and Barabanki most of the trade was done by the river route, once the bridge was constructed the river trade decreased greatly.The bridge was closed for gauge conversion in 1987/88 and was later re-opened in 1989/90 with broad gauge track. Another bridge was constructed and opened parallel to the Elgin Bridge on 2010/11 during the doubling of the Lucknow - Gorakhpur railway mainline.
