How DID a railway end up running through the middle of a football ground? And what is it like if you turn up for their biggest match of the season? I travelled to the small town of Čierny Balog, in the pine forests of central Slovakia, to experience the magic for myself...

Čierny Hron Railway (Slovakia) - Dobroč to Šánske
The Čierny Hron Railway is a narrow gauge railway in the Slovak Ore Mountains, it was originally built to transport wood from the forests in the area. By the middle of the 20th century the network had grown to a total length of 132 km. During the period 1927 to 1962, passenger trains ran between Čierny Balog and Hronec. The line finally was closed to all traffic in 1982; fortunately the tourist potential of the line has since been recognised, culminating in it being granted national heritage status allowing enthusiasts to carry out necessary repair work for the line to re-open in 1992 as a heritage railway. The system now extends for over 17 km serving Chvatimech, Hronec, Čierny Balog, Vydrovo and Dobroč, although on this visit trains were not running between Šánske and Chvatimech due to ongoing track repairs.
An unusual feature of this railway is that it passes between the grandstand and the football pitch at the TJ Tatran Čierny Balog football club stadium. For this trip a delightful little steam Locomotive “Joy U34.904” was provided to haul our train.

Track Level, Forward View - Čierny Hron Railway (Slovakia) – Dobroč to Šánske
See the Čierny Hron Railway from an unusual view point. I was having difficulty finding a place to mount a camera on the little steam locomotive that was to haul our train along part of the Čierny Hron Railway. The lamp bracket was too wide for the mount I was using and time was running out, so I clamped the camera to a step under the cab.

Jízda parního vlaku z Čierneho Balogu na Šánske a zpět. Vlak táhla parní lokomotiva Reşiţa U46.903. Video vzniklo během oslav 40. let znovuobnovení Čirnohronské železnice, které se konaly v Balogu a na Sv. Jánu.

Schwarzgranbahn - Čiernohronská železnica 2019 - Teil 2
Vom 17. August bis zum 22. August 2019 besuchten wir das verbliebene Schmalspurbahnnetz der Schwarzgranbahn (Čiernohronská železnica) rund um Čierny Balog in der Slowakei.
Von den ehemals 132 km Waldbahnstrecke mit der Spurweite von 760 mm sind heute noch (oder wieder) ca. 13 km auf 3 Streckenästen in Betrieb. Ursprünglich diente die Waldbahn natürlich der Holzabfuhr, seit 1992 verkehrt sie als Museumseisenbahn.
Im zweiten Video geht es um den Streckenabschnitt Čierny Balog nach Dobroč. Als kleines Highlight gibt es zum Schluss des Videos die legendäre Fahrt während des Fussballspiels in Jánošovka.

Das Eisenbahnmuseum in Cierny Barlog erreicht man vom Bahnhof Chvatimech, von wo man ihn in 12 km mit mit der 760 mm Schmalspurbahn auf eigener, 16 km langen Strecke, erreicht.
Das Museum unterhält auch einen netten Picknickplatz, wo wir rustikal bewirtet wurden, auch mit Musik.
Ich lese gerade auf Wikipedia, dass man die Strecke bis 2025 elektrifizieren will. Dann ist es mir dem Charme der Strecke leider vorbei. Ich habe meine meisten Informationen von Wikipedia, da man die offiziellen Seiten der Museen mangels Sprachkenntnis nicht lesen kann, oder aber die von mir gesuchten Informationen sind nicht vorhanden.
To the Cierny Barlog Railway Museum you have to change at the railway station Chvatimech. The whole track of the 760 mm narrow gauge railway has 16 km. It is 12 km to the museum.
