Ancient City of Tikal (mini documentary)

In December 2021, I took a 5-day trip to Guatemala for the purpose of filming these magnificent ruins that hold such a special place in Mesoamerican history. I had previously studied the Mayans in my SPAN 403 course at the University of Louisville, but I wanted to personally visit the capital of the ancient civilization and provide an informative backdrop on what this place is truly about. I hope you enjoy this video.

Exploring TIKAL, The Most Impressive Mayan Ruins In Guatemala

The EPIC view of Tikal really took our breath away. We spent the day exploring the most beautiful Maya ruins in Guatemala. Tikal National Park is home to over 60.000 buildings of which only a fraction has been excavated. The temples are situated in the middle of the jungle. The surroundings really give it an impressive atmosphere. As we were walking in the jungle between the temples, we came across a bunch of wildlife, which was a really cool extra. We highly recommend to visit Tikal, as it is such an amazing site to explore. You can hire a guide at the entrance to give you a tour. We recommend staying on the beautiful island of Flores, where you can easily book a tour to visit the temples of Tikal.

Climbing Tikal Ruins in Guatemala

Exploring Tikal Ruins in Guatemala has always been on the top of my list. Not only is the Guatemalan jungle in Peten beautiful, but having the opportunity to walk amongst the archeology of Tikal Ruins to see, feel and just imagine what it was like to live during its peak, is an unforgettable experience.

More information here

In Feb 2018, using LiDAR sensing technology, scientists were able to virtually remove the jungle canopy and discovered that the already massive Mayan city of Tikal was actually part of a megalopolis. This discovery, which we are so lucky to be a part of and watch, has changed everything we know of the Mayan Civilization today. Maybe we will even be able to figure out what happened to them.

Tikal is the largest UNESCO site in the America’s and was the first to contain both natural and archaeological certifications. The natural biosphere surrounding Tikal is 756 km squared, and the ruins up until Feb covered 16km squared.

Interested in finding out more about Tikal? Check out this article which contains more detailed information about Tikal, UNESCO rules, how to get there, and my personal experience.

Did you know that they can only re-store and reveal 1/3 of every building according to UNESCO rules?

Interested in taking the 4:00 am tour? I mean…its pretty awesome to watch the jungle wake up from the top of the tallest pre-Columbian structure, am I right? Staying at one of the lodges on site can make the wake up call so much easier.

Guatemala: Tikal Temple 4 Sunrise Tour in the ancient Mayan Ruins in the Jungle of Central America

Our last stop in Guatemala was the Unesco world heritage site and Mayan Ruins of Tikal which is a national park. Visiting Tikal for the sunrise tour can be tricky because you need to buy your tickets before at the main gate which does not open until later in the morning. If you don't buy them ahead of time, you will not be admitted. You can also buy them at various banks around the country ahead of time.
We got up and hurriedly walked about 20 minutes from the Tikal Inn which was one of two accommodations inside the park. Along the way we dodged harmless tarantulas using our headlamps and flashlights. We climbed the long stairs in the dark to the top of Temple IV which faces eastward and listened to the sounds of the jungle provided by a variety of birds and prehistoric sounding howler monkeys. The dawn can often be cloudy so be aware that you may not actually see the rising sun. After the sun had risen, we tromped back down the stairway and had a brief guided tour of the complex which included the Mundo Perdido and the accropolis with the jaguar temple and stellas. We headed back to the Tikal Inn which had a pool and restaurant for the rest of the afternoon to catch up on our sleep watch spider monkeys and birds as we rested for our trip to Belize the next day.

Mayan Ruins in Tikal Guatemala

Our primary goal in visiting Guatemala was to see the Mayan temples in Tikal. It is located in a national park in a remote part of Guatemala near Belize. It was spectacular. Just in case all mayhem breaks out on 21 December 2012 at the end of the Mayan calendar, we said a prayer to the Mayan Sun God on the altar of Temple 2.

Climbing the Best Ruins in Central America: Guatemala’s Tikal on our Vanlife Tour

One of our favorite ruins, Tikal. Guatemala amazed us with amazing nature, wildlife and culture.

The price of visiting Tikal is 150Q or around $19USD each.

Tikal is a no pet day, like most ruins.

Wandering Tikal make sure to bring sunscreen and a snack. Most of the hikes are under jungle cover but climbing the ruins is in direct sunlight. They sell snacks and water but they’re quite expensive.

The animals alone in Tikal are worth the ticket price. Seeing monkeys, coatis, toucans, and other colorful birds is a top highlight. So much better than a zoo, treading quietly to find them then watching as they carry on their day is an incredible experience.

TIKAL Mayan Jungle Ruins | SEE IT ON YOUR OWN | Transport ONLY from FLORES | Guatemala TRAVEL VLOG

Tikal, a vast site with Mayan Ruins in the jungle of Guatemala. You can visit WITHOUT paying for a guided tour, but how easy is it? In this video, we stick to our backpacking nature and decided to visit Tikal without paying for a guided tour.

We arranged a transport ONLY option from Flores island, that would take us in the daytime to and from the site. It can only be seen for sunrise and sunset with a guide which is much more money. In the daytime it was not too busy, but difficult to navigate the twisty and turning paths. So we did get a bit lost!

In this video of Tikal, without a tour we find our way to the main jungle ruins and guide you with information and thoughts along the way.

If you are visiting Chichen Itza, or are undecided of which one to go for. WATCH THIS! As we have been to both we discuss some similarities and differences of the Mayan Jungle Ruins.

Join as we learn how to navigate this world, with a backpack on and camera set to record. Our day to day experiences, the highs and the lows. REAL backpacking, hostels, transport.

Bocawina Rainforest Resort & Adventures - Tikal Ruins Guatemala

n the heart of the Guatemalan jungle, surrounded by lush vegetation, lies one of the major sites of Mayan civilization - Tikal. The ceremonial centre contains superb temples and palaces, and public squares accessed by means of ramps. The ruined city reflects the cultural evolution of Mayan society from hunter gathering to farming, with an elaborate religious, artistic and scientific culture. There are over 3,000 separate buildings dating from 600 BC to AD 900, including temples, residences, religious monuments decorated with hieroglyphic inscriptions and tombs. Altought archaeological work started around 80 years ago, it's estimated that still 80% of the ruins remain unexcavated, making Tikal one of the most promissour sites to decipher some of the unknown Mayan secrets.

Tikal National Park protects some 22,100 ha of rainforest, with over 2,000 plant species identified in the park area and with over fifty-four species of mammals, including the howler monkey, spider monkey, giant anteater, nine-banded armadillo, coati, kinkajou, tayra, paca, puma, margay, ocelot, jaguarundi and the mighty jaguar!
