Not ALONE anymore, Overlanding Zambia // EP. 47
Zambia, the sixth country in Africa we're crossing on our overland tour around the world.
But one thing changed we're not alone anymore, my (Kai) Family is visitng us and will follow us around in Zambia. We put an exciting plan together for the next two weeks, visiting National Parks, driving offroad, wild camping / bush camping and much more. But to get started we first need to pick them up in the capital Lusaka, therefore we need to cross half the country, going from Chipata to Lusaka. Then get the rental Car and practice driving in African on the great east road of Zambia.
The rental company set us up with several challenges including the Not so reliable Toyota Prado…

Zambia! with Ultimate Adventures. Episode 2
Liuwa Plain in western Zambia has one of the oldest conservation histories in Africa, dating back to the late 19th century when the King of Barotseland appointed his people as the custodians of the reserve.
The game is spread out across the plains and takes some driving around to find, but to come upon a vast herd of blue wildebeest, a prowling wild dog, or a pride of dozing lions in this forgotten piece of Africa is especially fitting because of its completely natural and uncommercialised state.
The birdlife is abundant and the very dramatic storms and lightning rising up on the horizon, contrasting with the green and gold grasslands, create spectacular views and fantastic photographic opportunities.
Liuwa’s wildebeest migration is the second largest on the continent. These charismatic animals and the lions who follow them have become world-renowned, landing the park on the New York Times ’52 Top Places to Visit’ list in 2018.
Liuwa is the largest employer in the region with over 95% of its workforce being local residents. Over 200 children have received scholarships, and more than 4,000 local farmers have benefited from skills training and human-wildlife mitigation tools.

The land of the legendary African walking safari, Victoria Falls, the wild Zambezi River, abundant wildlife, and raw wilderness, all in one friendly country.
The Team from Ironman 4x4 Africa traveled with Tour guides, Simon and Dess from Ultimate Adventures to Zambia.
In the first episode, Dirk and Mic meet up with Ultimate Adventures at Kasane in Botswana and travel together to Kabula Lodge next to the Zambezi River.
Situated on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, Western Zambia, Kabula Lodge has been specifically designed to provide affordable, comfortable, and relaxing holiday accommodation for families who love fishing, birding, and the outdoors and who want to enjoy Africa and the bush at its pristine best. Kabula is also a recognised haven for the keen fisherman wanting to catch a trophy Tiger Fish.
Also known as Sioma Falls because these Falls are near the village of Sioma. These beautiful Falls mark the transition point of the Zambezi Rivers’ flow from the Kalahari sand floodplain to basalt dyke – the latter eventually contributing to the magnificent gorges of Victoria Falls.
The horseshoe-shaped Ngonye Falls are mostly impressive because of the sheer volume of water that cascades over the staggered, twenty-meter drop. An interesting aspect is that the river flows underneath the rock on either side of the falls. It is quite remarkable to stand upon them, feeling and hearing the underground flow.

Travelling north to Zambia, the team first pay a visit to Lusaka and then travels to the farming community of Mkushi. Many South African farmers have settled in the area and practice farming on a massive scale.
Overlanding Malawi in the Wet Season // EP.45
We are Overlanding around beautiful Malawi in the wet season, enjoying the people, the roads and the green scenery, not so much the rain!
We continue south avoiding taking the M1 road, instead, we take secondary roads, which are muddy and sometimes challenging.
We stop in Mzuzu to eat Schnitzel, amazing, it tasted like heaven! After doing some groceries, which again we're interrupted by the rain, we continue towards Nkhata Bay. This is one of the most beautiful areas of the lake and we decide to stay at Mayoka Camp as we can use the kayaks for free.
After kayaking in the Malawi lake we move on to a new spot. it will take a bit of time until we find some access to the lake, and in the meantime we would struggle with diesel shortages and cholera outbreaks in the region.
We are blessed with a beautiful place to camp at Lake Malawi, but the weather turns bad once again and we get some really bad storms and lots and lots of rain, which forces us to repair many of the cracks in the car, before damaging it even more.
This is Malawi in the wet season.

In July 2019, we bought a Toyota Land Cruiser LX (1992) to drive through east and (parts of) southern Africa. In about 100 days, we did a 10.000 km round trip through Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia and Malawi.
