*I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. Description of Yogyakarta:

The city of Yogyakarta (simply called Jogja) is known as Neverending Asia for its endless attractions and appeal. It is renowned as a center of education (Kota Pelajar), classical Javanese fine art and culture such as batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry, and puppet shows. Yogyakarta was the Indonesian capital during the Indonesian National Revolution from 1945 to 1949.
A unique combination of ancient temples within its proximity, such as the world famous Borobudur and Prambanan temples, its history, traditions, unique Javanese culture and natural forces make Yogyakarta a very worthwhile place to visit in Indonesia.

Five Cool Facts About Yogyakarta:

1. YOGYA means «suitable, fit, proper», and KARTA, «prosperous, flourishing» (i.e., «a city that is fit to prosper»).

2. Candi Prambanan (temple) or also known as Candi Rara Jonggrang, is a well known ancient Hindu Temple in Indonesia. It is built during the 9th century for Trimurti as an expression that God is the Creator (Brahma), Preserver (Vishnu) and also the Destroyer (Shiva). It is one of the Indonesia UNESCO World Heritage Site, being one of the largest Hindu temple architecture in Southeast Asia.

3. 9th-century Borobudur temple is an Indonesia UNESCO Heritage site and one of the largest Buddhist temple in the world. It was built in three tiers: a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces. Around the circular platforms are 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha.

4. Yogyakarta is the only major city, which still has traditional 'Becak' (rickshaw-style) transport.

5. Yogyakarta has more than just culture though. It is a very lively city and a shopper's delight. The main road, Malioboro Street, is always crowded and famous for its night street food-culture and street vendors. Many tourist shops and hotels are concentrated along this street.

Our visit Jogyakarta and Central Java travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (best restaurants and street food), top museums and the region by day and night. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical tourism brochure or tour.

20 Things to do in Yogyakarta & Central Java Travel Guide (Solo, Semarang) for Foodies in Indonesia Travel Food Lovers Video Transcript:

Hey guys! We're in Indonesia for a week. Yeah, so this is our second time back in Indonesia and this week we're going to be exploring Yogyakarta and Central Java and this video is going to show you some of the top attractions in the region. Can't wait to show you around. Let's go!

For our very first stop in Central Java, we headed to the biggest Buddhist monument in the world and the most popular attraction in the region: Borobudur.

So we are ready for another adventure. Tell us! Yeah, we're heading up to Mount Merapi and there is basically two different ways you can do it. You can hike up but we're going with a jeep. Yeah, it'll be fun. Hop on in.

After a few days in Jogja, we hopped on a train and headed towards Solo, also known as Surakarta. The ride was a little over an hour, and not only was it an inexpensive way to travel, but it was also incredibly scenic. We zoomed past villages and rice fields, and before we knew it, we had arrived.

So right now we're inside Pasar Triwindu which is an antiques market here in Solo and we are seeing some real gems.

So I went shopping for my Batik and I found one I really like. It cost about 30 US dollars and I can't wait to start wearing it. I think the first time I'll try it on is for dinner soon.

So we're starting off with coconut milk pancakes which are called Serabi.

Our next stop in Solo was the Mangkunegaran Palace, which dates back to 1757. Part of the royal family still lives here, so you can’t wander around.

Another way to experience Solo is by doing a tour on a pedibike, also known as a becak.

This trip was all about going in search of food, culture and a little bit of adventure. Over the course of the week we visited ancient temples, browsed through antique markets, ate our fair share of street food, and tackled a rather infamous volcano. In this video we are going to show you 20 things to do in Yogyakarta and Central Java, so let’s get started.

And that’s a wrap for our whirlwind trip to Indonesia. We hope you enjoyed getting a closer look at what Yogyakarta and Central Java have to offer. As always, if you have any other suggestions of things to do and places to visit, feel free to let us know in the comments below. Happy travels!

This is part of our Travel in Indonesia video series showcasing Indonesian food, Indonesian culture and Indonesian cuisine.

The Wonders of Java - Travel Documentary (Indonesia is not only Bali, Ep. 01)

In this Java Documentary I take you on a road trip across the biggest island of Indonesia with my friends Kiko & Carlotta.
➸ My Indo Travel Planning Kit:

Java is famous for its many natural sights such as volcanos and waterfalls but it is also the most populous island of the country and with that the historic and cultural center of Indonesia. This Java documentary aims to show the diversity of this island covering the historic and religious background, explaining the cultural roots as well as the culinary variety one can find here besides the natural and man made sights.

All music used in this Indonesia Travel Documentary was provided by Epidemic Sound. Use the following link to get a free 30 day trial (free music for your videos with no obligation to sign up after!):

This Java Travel Documentary is the first part of a Documentary Series called „Indonesia is not only Bali“. While many visitors mainly focus on Bali alone, Indonesia with its more than 17,000 islands offers a wealth of incredible destinations each with its unique charm and attractions.

Therefore my plan was to visit a number of different destinations to showcase the diversity of the country to the best of my ability. I’ll be starting my trip off with the largest island, called Java where I’ll be exploring the cities of Jakarta and Yogyakarta to understand the historical and religious background before meeting my friends from Portugal and heading into the nature to see volcanoes, waterfalls and some of the largest jungle temples in the world.

In order to show you the whole diversity of Indonesia we tried to cover the majority of sights in this Java Documentary from the west over the center to the east as well as the volcanos and waterfalls in the center of Java.

You can use this Java Documentary to plan your own trip to Java, on my website you’ll find all essential information needed.

Following I list all places & things to do in Java, Indonesia as seen in this Indonesia Documentary:
- Jakarta
- Yogyakarta
- Borobudur

- Mt. Bromo
- Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video (which can be used as a travel guide):

We begin this journey in Jakarta, the nation’s capital, and one of Asia’s largest cities. The city can feel overwhelming at first sight, but there are some great areas to visit, including museums, historic neighborhoods, and modern shopping malls.

After Jakarta, we travel to Yogyakarta, the cultural heartland of Java. It’s a much more relaxed place to walk around, and provides a more traditional perspective of Indonesia, with music performances (gamelan songs) and shadow puppet theatre. I also visit local farmers in the countryside around the city. Most are growing rice in green paddy fields, and are happy to show you around.

Around Yogyakarta you will find two of Indonesia’s most stunning temples. Borobudur is a Buddhist temple, and easily one of the most impressive historic structures in Asia. Prambanan is of Hindu origin, and its architecture is very different from Borobudur.

Mount Bromo is arguably one of Indonesia’s most famous volcanoes, and it’s actually possible to get up on the ridge, to get a peek into its crater. The next destination is Pangandaran, a peaceful seaside town with some beautiful beaches and powerful waves, and a popular holiday destination.

Semarang is a busy city with some beautiful historic architecture, including the church which was built in Dutch colonial times. The Christian minority still uses this church. After Semarang, we travel to Kawah Ijen, a surreal volcanic crater where miners are collecting blocks of sulfur. In some moments, this place felt apocalyptic.

In the fishing port of Banyuwangi (also the gateway to Bali) you will find some spectacular fishing boats, with bright colors and classic design. The town’s atmosphere is friendly, and it’s nice to walk around visiting some of the markets. The region around Banyuwangi is well suited for agriculture, and is used for cacao, rubber, and coffee production.

In the lush green mountains around Wonosobo, you will find some beautiful tea plantations, that are open to visit. We finish the journey in Surabaya, an important business and trading hub in Indonesia. It might not boast a lot of ‘tourist attractions’, but it’s a nice place to visit. The main mosque is a highlight, where the local Muslim population comes to pray. It provides an interesting view into the main religion in Indonesia, Islam. On Fridays, this area turns into an ‘open air restaurant’, with street food sellers offering their finest dishes.

Yogyakarta Travel Guide | City in Indonesia

Yogyakarta (often called “Jogja”) is a city on the Indonesian island of Java known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage. Its ornate 18th-century royal complex, or kraton, encompasses the still-inhabited Sultan’s Palace. Also within the kraton are numerous open-air pavilions that host classical Javanese dance shows and concerts of gamelan music, characterized by gongs, chimes and plucked string instruments.
