After 10 years, I have returned to the country that I enjoyed THE LEAST in all of my travels… Brunei. It’s a tiny country on Borneo island, sandwiched in between Malaysia and Indonesia, and I was very nervous to go back. Why? Because my last video there was all about how much I hated it, and I was so worried that I would be thrown in jail by the government, or even yelled at by the locals…. But this time around, I went in with fresh eyes and a new perspective, and I really enjoyed it!!!

I met up with a local Bruneian friend from Instagram named Bryant, and he took me under his wing to show me his version of Brunei. And what we discovered will seriously blow your mind!!

Brunei - Unveiling The Beauty from Above - 2023

Brunei, officially known as the Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace, is a small country located on the northern coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Here are some key facts about Brunei:

Brunei is bordered by the South China Sea to the north and surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak. It has a total land area of approximately 5,765 square kilometers (2,226 square miles).

Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital and largest city of Brunei. It serves as the country's political, economic, and cultural center.

Brunei is an absolute monarchy, ruled by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who has been in power since 1967. The sultan holds absolute authority and is the head of state, head of government, and commander-in-chief of the Brunei Armed Forces.

Islam is the official religion of Brunei, and it plays a significant role in the country's culture and daily life. The majority of the population follows Sunni Islam.

Brunei has a prosperous economy primarily based on its abundant reserves of oil and natural gas. The country is one of the world's largest exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and ranks among the wealthiest nations globally in terms of GDP per capita. The government provides its citizens with generous social welfare benefits due to its oil wealth.
Standard of Living: Brunei has a high standard of living, with its citizens enjoying free education, healthcare, and subsidized housing. The government heavily subsidizes essential goods and services, and there is no personal income tax.

Brunei's culture is influenced by Malay traditions and Islamic practices. The people of Brunei celebrate festivals such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Aidiladha. Traditional arts and crafts, including weaving, silverwork, and woodcarving, are also integral to Bruneian culture.
Environment: Brunei has a diverse ecosystem, including rainforests, mangroves, and coral reefs. It is known for its rich biodiversity and is home to various species of flora and fauna, including the endangered proboscis monkey and green turtles.

Brunei is gradually developing its tourism industry, attracting visitors with its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and historical landmarks. Some popular attractions include the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Kampong Ayer (water village), and Ulu Temburong National Park.

Brunei - Exploring The Sultant's Mosques

SEASON 2 // EPISODE 48 // COUNTRY #38 // BRUNIE

Exploring the mosques of Brunei and finding the palace of the Sultan of Brunei. Come explore and adventure this unique part of Asia with us! :)

The Largest Residential Palace In The World - The Istana Nurul Iman

The official residence of the Sultan of Brunei, The Istana Nurul Iman, is the world's largest residential palace.

The Istana Nurul Iman (The Light of Faith Palace) is considered the world’s largest residential palace in terms of the floor area. It is the official dwelling place of the 29th Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, and also acts as the headquarters of the Brunei government.

The mega palace is located along the pristine shores of the River Brunei, five miles south of Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. Breathtaking views of the place are clear from the adjoining Persiaran Damuan Park. Visitors can enjoy the panoramic view of the profligate palace designated by curved rooftops and the golden dome of the mosque rising above the tall tropical trees on a boat ride on the Brunei River.

The construction of the palace by Ayala Corporation commenced in 1981 and ended in 1984, during the time when Brunei attained full independence from Britain at a cost of $1.4 billion. It contains 1,788 rooms which include 257 restrooms, a mosque accommodating 1,500 people, a ceremonial hall accommodating up to 5,000 visitors, 5 large swimming pools, and an aerated stable holding 200 polo horses. In addition, there is a 110 car garage and parking lot for the Sultan’s 65 custom-made Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Bentleys as well as 165 Rolls Royces, and 37 Bugattis.

BRUNEI IS BEAUTIFUL - PART 1

With HM The Sultan of Brunei in London

A selfie with the His Majesty The Sultan of Brunei.

Once a year or once every 2 years His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei would invite all Bruneians living in and visiting the UK and Ireland to London for an audience and an amazing buffet lunch.

His Majesty would walk around in the room without royal protocol and without his security, he would let everyone approach him, he would sincerely talk to everyone and he would actually listen and converse. Most people would just approach him shake his hand and His Majesty would gladly entertain you, even just for a brief selfie.

Before leaving everyone and I mean EVERYONE would be handed a gift. If you are a student he would also reimburse your transport fare for your effort.

Throughout the past decade the international media made so much effort trying to spread alot of over-exegerated and negative stories about him and Brunei; Brunei is the most peaceful country in southeast asia and has lowest crime rate; fuel and staple food are subsidised, the Sultan is loved and adored by his people. He has the heart and the wellbeing of his people in mind. For us that is all that matters.

Digahayu Kebawah Duli Tuan Patik.

Visiting Brunei Sultan's Palace - The largest residential Palace in the world (Istana Nurul Iman)

Every year during Hari Raya, the Sultan of Brunei opens it's doors for visitors to visit. This video was made before I really got into making videos here on YouTube. I felt that it is a place that you would be interested to see.

I have lived in Brunei for approximately 19 years then moved to Miri which is the neighbouring city of Brunei and is part of Malaysia. I guess many people don't know where Miri actually is. Malaysia is divided into the western side and the eastern side. The royal palace has gone through loads of renovations to modernize the whole place. This hall where the guest visit is huge. It did not look like this when I visited it as a teenager.

Perfect Timing in Brunei - Sultan of Brunei

This is the second time a Head of State has waved at me, but this one was special. My friends and I were standing in front of the Sultan of Brunei's Palace (World's Largest Residence) when we told to get on the sidewalk. We had no idea what was going to happen next. Police bikes roll pass and then a G-Wagon rolls pass with someone waving at us (there's just the three of us on the sidewalk).

Brunei Darussalam - Heritage

Imagine cities of gold, a 600 year-old monarchy, lavish ceremony, glittering regalia, epic history, treasures unexpected, Imagine the green heart of Borneo, Brunei, a kingdom of unexpected treasures.

Discovering Brunei

Perched in a small corner of Borneo island, 1,500 KM directly south of Hainan province, lies the small but wealthy country of Brunei Darussalem. The 400,000 inhabitants are blessed with some of the largest oil fields in Southeast Asia making it, one of the wealthiest countries (per person) in the world.

The country is made up of two small slivers of land separated a part of eastern Malaysia. It boasts two worthwhile attractions. The capital of Bandar Seri Begawan, with its striking mosques and picturesque water villages, makes for a relaxing days exploration. The city is small and easy to get around on foot, or by using the water taxis that take you out to the stilted villages in the Sungai river. Allow a good few hours to loose yourself in the maze of boardwalk paths that weave through the water villages.

The second must see attraction is the pristine rainforest that has been left untouched, unlike much of the rest of Borneo. The stunning Ulu Temburong National Park is the easiest entry into the forest though you will have to join a tour if you want to avoid complex permits. Most tours go by boat from Bandar and last two days.

Brunei is not a country with much to offer a long term holiday but worth a visit for a short break or while travelling through Borneo.
