Winter Survival Shelter, Stay Warm Overnight With No Fire

How to build a simple emergency winter survival shelter for use in a solo overnight stay in the field. If you end up getting caught out in bad weather while out in the field and have limited resources this style shelter can be made with no tools, and little skill. Just build it small and use as much material as you have energy to gather, the more you get the warmer you will be.
The Arid Scablands can be a tricky place to be when the weather gets bad. Cold winds, low temperatures and steep cliffs and ledges can become hard to navigate at night. In other areas that have an abundance of resources building a shelter can be pretty simple, and there are many videos of building bamboo huts, stick lean-to's shelters, fern and bark huts. We have to be a little creative out here having almost none of those building materials, even firewood is scarce.

How An EMERGENCY Blanket Almost KILLED me! | Winter Camping FAIL!

Emergency blankets. You know all about them right? WRONG! Using one of these in the wrong ways at the wrong time could prove fatal... BELIEVE ME!

*NOTE*: What I describe in this video was NOT an emergency survival situation! The advice given is my own PERSONAL experience for trying to stay COMFORTABLE in the backcountry. In an emergency situation ensure you have the skills and knowledge of what to do and how to properly use your gear (including when to get an emergency blanket RIGHT NEXT TO A PERSON'S SKIN) and listen to experts (which I am NOT).

Vapour barriers can actually be incredibly effective to keep a person both warm AND dry. By limiting the amount of evaporation, you can limit the amount of heat loss, while allowing for more conscious nuanced decisions about personal thermoregulation. My favourite backpacking YouTuber (Jason THEBestBackpacker) talks about this concept at 3:52 in this video: For MORE information on Vapour Barriers Read Andrew Skurka's write up here:

Winter Woodland Wild Camping Tips

Winter wild camping in the woods is great as long as you get the basics right. Camping wild in northern temperate conditions in winter is really just an extension of camping in warmer months. It's all part of one continuum. Temperate winter conditions are nowhere near as harsh as continental cold winter conditions or boreal conditions. But these conditions do require a little more organisation, forethought and self-discipline. This video is a summary of the 21 tips I offer for those who want to wild camp in temperate winter climates. These tips and tricks will keep you warm and comfortable.

Cheap Winter Camping Tip, Keeping Warm inside your Tent

Cheap winter camping tip that has been used by people all over the world for hundreds of years. We apologise ahead of time for the slight disgustingness of this topic ;-) Us humans haven't always had convenient flushing toilets in our cushy homes. In very cold camping situations it can be unsafe to venture outside your shelter to relieve yourself. This is one of the secrets of winter camping particularly when it's snowing and raining. Find yourself a reliable bottle with a wide enough lid and call it your piss bottle. Regardless of how warm your sleep system is, you will lose valuable warmth from your entire body if you're forced to leave your tent in a storm.

Over the next few months we will be making some more snow camping videos that we greatly look forward to sharing with you. This video was filmed in The Walls of Jerusalem National Park in Tasmania.

Survival Tip - How to stay warm at night while camping

The subtitles are hard to read. If you are having difficult reading them I fixed it here:

Do you like winter camping but always get cold? Tired of crawling into a cold sleeping bag? Do you just get cold in general when you are sleeping in a tent or hammock? We may have a solution for you and its something anybody can easily do!

I like to boil water in my Klein Kanteen, seal the lid on as tight as I can, wrap in in a wool scarf of schemag and then bring it into my hammock and sleeping bag with me. I find that if I hit the sack at about 9 pm with a hot water bottle, it stays warm until about 4am inside my sleeping bag.
Does your wife get cold feet while camping? Hook her up with this survival tip! You may score some brownie points!

Be sure you are using a single walled meat canteen and not an insulated canteen. A double walled or insulated canteen could explode if placed over a fire.

If you want a fire starter like the one I wear around my neck and use in this video, support me and buy one through my Wazoo Survival Gear affiliate link!

Don't let the cold keep you indoors — learn how to survive the outdoors at night in comfort in any temperature.

Step 1: Get a good tent
Splurge on a quality tent. A good tent serves as shelter from the wind and rain, and also remains breathable while trapping body heat inside.

Step 2: Make a barrier
Make a barrier between yourself and the ground. This can be as simple as a pile of pine branches or as modern as a foam mattress.

Tip
Avoid air mattresses. The cold ground will cool the air inside.

Step 3: Dress properly
Layer your clothing for maximum insulation and prevention of excess moisture.

Step 4: Eat
Eat before you go to sleep. Don't skip dinner because you're tired or cold. Have a hot meal to fuel your body while you sleep.

Step 5: Put on hat
Put on your winter hat. You want as little exposure to air as possible

Tip
For added warmth, bring along a winter hat with ear flaps.

Step 6: Hunker down
Pull your sleeping bag over your head and ball up as best you can.

Did You Know?
Contrary to popular belief, humans do not lose a majority of body heat through their heads.
