If You're Foreign Don't Walk The Streets Here ???????? (#105)

If you're one of the rare souls who decides to take a trip to Guyana, the least visited country in the Americas, chances are your first stop will be Georgetown, the capital city. With a population of only around 200,000, it looks and feels almost like a small town. But this city is no joke. With the newfound oil wealth driving prices up, crime is starting to skyrocket. Although everyone in Guyana suffers from theft, American oil workers and Chinese merchants in particular are hunted in the streets by muggers. I was no oil worker, but I was assumed to be one.

Wow, People in Guyana Are Fun! (#104)

For a very long time, I had looked at the map of South America and wondered about those 3 tiny countries at the top -- the countries that no one knew even existed. One of those countries, Guyana, actually had a huge immigrant population in New York, where I'm from. It was the only English speaking country in South America, they said. It was a country of unspoiled natural beauty, they also said. With the world slowly reopening again, I knew I had to go. Guyana is not rich, but with it's recent discovery of oil, that will be changing very soon. But I was there for the people.

10 Things to Do in Guyana

Get more Tips here!
Guyana is one of those destinations you wouldn't think as first on the list. However, this Caribbean country will surprised you for sure. Have a look of the things you can do there.

1) Spot the local wildlife
Not only the landscapes are beautiful, the fauna of Guyana is impressive. You should go there and it will surprise you with unique animals such as an anteater, a giant river otters, a harpy eagle, cock-of-the rock birds, black caymans and even a jaguar.

2) Go hiking
Althought the weather is very hot and wet, it's still a must do in Guyana. You can go to the Dolomites. Sometimes it has hard paths that will test your resistance. But in the end it will worth it. After a long day of hiking, you can always reward you with a nice meal, right?

3) Go on a boat ride
The best way to move around Guyana is by boat. If you go to the Rupununi rivers you won't regret it at all. Its local flora and fauna will amaze you as well as the beautiful landscapes that will surround you all the way, and make you feel alive.

4) Explore Georgetown
It's capital is a place you shouldn't miss. I's a colorful city full of local markets such as Bourda and Starbroek Market. Also, St. George’s Cathedral is one of the top Guyana tourist attractions and a must see. Plus a lot of more places to see. So, don't forget about it.

5) Walk through the forest
Well, taking into account its big jungle, of course, we recomendo you to go there and explore it. For sure, it will be kind of a new feeling for you. Inside the jungle birdwatching is a must do. But don't forget about the insects and muddy ground. Go prepared or don't go. We warned you...

6) Don't forget the canopy of Iwokrama
The Iwokrama Rainforest is a great way to appreciate the nature. You'll find a series of suspension bridges hoisted 30 meters above the forest floor from where where you could take the best pictures ever. The starting point is located at about 1 km from the lodge, via a walk in the forest and a staircase of around 160 steps.

7) Go to Kaieteur Falls
These are nothing like the Iguazu Falls or the Victoria Falls which are already wonderful. These falls will blow your mind with their spectacular views. The easiest way to go there is to taking a small plane in Georgetown, or you can always do a 5-day overland journey up river and go hiking.

8) Try the local food
Guyana melts different cultures in its food, such as Caribbean, Indian... and that will only get you licking your plate because of this absolutely delicious food full of tropical fruit and vegetables. However, keep in mind that the word “bake” in fact means fried dough of bread so that you won't have any misunderstanding

9) Sleep in hammocks
This is how most of the indigenous communities sleep and you should try it too. This experience is like being one to one with nature, alone in the dark, in harmony with the environment. It's one of the most special sensations that you can experience. Just do it!

10) Go to Rewa
Located in the North Rupununi region of Guyana, you must take an hour and 15 minutes flight on a 13 seater and a one hour boat ride along the Rupununi River, because it's completely isolated: no cars; no phone and no internet connection. But this is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Guyana to appreciate the wild nature and outdoor activities.

Would you ever thought you could do all of these in Guyana?

Why Guyana, Suriname & Belize Part of the Caribbean?

Though Guyana, Suriname, and Belize are geographically located in South and Central America respectively, they are all considered to be Caribbean countries. Buy why?

Guyana in South America borders Venezuela, Suriname, and Brazil, and Suriname similarly borders Brazil, Guyana, and French Guiana, a French territory. It is even a more extreme case for Belize, which shares its border with only Mexico and Guatemala, and is surrounded by only Spanish-speaking countries.

So why are these countries often grouped together with the Caribbean? And what makes a region the Caribbean begin to begin with? Let’s now tackle this question.

Trying Guyanese STREET FOOD for the FIRST TIME! ???????? First day in GUYANA! Completely UNEXPECTED!

???????? VISIT GUYANA:
???????? DISCOVER GUYANA:
???????? BACKYARD CAFÉ:
???? VISIT MY TRAVEL BLOG:

Back in July of 2022, I explored my 90th country, Guyana, beginning in the capital city, Georgetown. Come with me on my very first day in the country as I get my first taste of Guyanese food and explore the capital!

For this trip, I teamed up with Visit Guyana and Discovery Guyana. Our first adventure together was exploring the Bourda Market, followed by a trip to the famous Backyard Café. Inside the Guyana Shop, I saw items made by local women, including achar, cassareep, crafts, pepper sauces, and more.

The pepper sauces looked amazing. They come in passionfruit, mango, and other flavors. I wanted to buy some. I also saw some cassava bread in packages, green seasoning (for seasoning meats), rubs, sauces, curries, extracts, spices, honey, local wines, and coconut biscuits.

I tried a coconut biscuit, which had a nice crunch and a slight sweetness to it. Lots of dishes here are made with coconut!

They then showed me some Limacol, which is considered a cure-all in Guyana. It’s sort of like Robitussin! Then, we headed into Bourda Market. There were tons of fresh fruit and vegetable vendors selling bananas, massive ripe pears (avocadoes), starfruit, watermelon, pineapple and more.

I loved the juicy and sour starfruit, which they use to make a traditional black cake. They call starfruit “five finger” in Guyana! Next was some fresh pineapple, which was so sweet and tasty! It’s the best pineapple I’ve ever had! I followed that with some amazing papaya.

Bourda is a drive-through market, so there are cars as well as pedestrians. Further on, we saw some okra, Guyanese cherries (which were nice and sour), sweet cassava, turmeric, and bottles of peppers. I tried a bite of a really spicy pepper! Next was a super sweet sapodilla fruit.

Then, we headed to the meat, fish, and poultry section, where the vendors were cleaning tons of fresh fish. It reminded me of the wet markets I’ve visited in parts of Asia. They also had some massive catfish, gray snapper, and more. Further on were different cuts of beef and then the household section of the market.

This market dates back to 1876. Then, we went to get some fried fish and pepper sauce! The fish was nice, and the pepper sauce was spicy with a bit of lime. It wasn’t too heavy. I loved it! It had some real heat to it!

Next was some fresh coconut water with cask-aged rum. It was so delicious! Then, we drove 10 minutes to the Backyard Café, which is reservation-only. They grow herbs all over the grounds. There’s a bar and a table outside, as well as an indoor section.

I watched them make rum and punch with passionfruit, lime, vodka, rum, gin, and ice. It was the best rum & punch of my life! I loved the sourness and the refreshing taste!

Next, we started making egg balls. They started by rolling out the cassava dough, which they cover a boiled egg with. Then, they drip it in a turmeric-rich batter and drop it in the hot oil. They fry until they’re golden brown! You eat them with a delicious sauce containing mango, garlic, vinegar, salt, and wiri wiri pepper.

The crunch of the coating was incredible, and the cassava inside was creamy. The mango sauce was fantastic! It was an amazing Guyanese street food! We followed that with some sorrel, which is a refreshing cinnamon and pimiento drink typically eaten at Christmas.

Then, they made the pepperpot with beef, cassareep (a byproduct of cassava), garlic, ginger, thyme, cinnamon, and more. It’s the national dish and you eat it with coconut bread. It was incredible. It had a syrupy thickness and the meat was unbelievably tender and tasty. It fell apart in my mouth!
