Today's van conversion video is all about insulation! Our last van build was insulated with spray foam insulation, but for a few different reasons this time around (which we talk about in the video) we've opted for wool insulation by Havelock Wool for our van build.

While we haven't lived in the van with wool insulation yet so we can't fully review how it performs, we can say that it's super safe and easy to install! A little tedious due to all the nooks and crannies of the van, but definitely not impossible.

We installed the insulation in our Sprinter van conversion over the course of 3 days since we weren't in a hurry, but it could easily be done in one day if you're pressed for time and ready to get started with van life ASAP.

** As stated in our last video, we are partnering with Havelock Wool for this van build. For information about our partnerships and affiliates, please read more about our standards regarding who we choose to partner with on our website here: **

❄️How to *ACTUALLY* Insulate Campervan for WINTER VANLIFE ❄️

Vanlife can really suck during the freezing winter months and the scolding hot summer days, especially if you aren't properly insulated!

Curious about spray foam? Make sure to check out Ida & Tobias, and their video all about the spray foam process:

Another incredible #vanlife channel to binge is that of Greg Virgoe. He does 2 big deep dives into the insulation process, and it's definitely worth checking out!

Van Life 101: Living in a Van How to Insulate a Van

There is a lot of information out there on Youtube about how to insulate a van, but very little of it is based on real research and long-term experience with real cold. After 15 years of living in a van--6 of those years in Anchorage, Alaska--I know and understand serious cold and the value of insulation. In this video I lay out in simple and clear terms the conclusions I've reached. In the next video I'll actually install the insulation.

My deepest and most sincere thanks go to my good friend Terry who worked right beside me and guided me through this whole process. He had the patience to convince me to do things the right way as opposed to the fast and easy way.

The Ultimate Van Build Journey:
In Season 1 of the van build, we stripped off the old DPD stickers, rust-proofed the entire van, painted it our favorite matte grey color, redesigned the cab, planned our van's design / layout, created our epic water tanks, built our custom panorama roof windows, installed new wheels, & installed an insulated floor! PHEW! Building a home is something else!

Then Season 2 of the van build rolled around, and with our workshop's renovation behind us, it got TECHNICAL! We built a 47 degree solar tilt (1kW of solar power!), made custom seat bases & installed our custom seats, we took security to the NEXT level, breaking down our 12 incredible layers of security, wired everything our tech-dependent home will need, created the BEST insulation we've ever seen in a campervan (check out our video on campervan insulation & cold camping insulation), installed our own custom security cameras, framed the ceiling, AND created our peak-a-boo curtains. WOW!! We are beyond ready to be off grid in this Ducato van home! ❤️

???? Who are we?
We’re Ladi (from Czechia) & Margaret (from USA) and we love eBikes, campervans, & cats. In 2020 our van life lifestyle flipped upside down, & we needed to stop traveling in our camper to lockdown in eastern Czech Republic due to the pandemic. With no travel plans and some new time on our hands, we decided to sell our old van, start an electric bike business, begin a youtube channel, build our ultimate dream campervan, renovate a junkyard into a tiny house homestead, plan a container & apartment unit, and… well, some other smaller projects in-between ????.

What we thought would only be 6 months of “stillness” has become 2 years of innovation, progress, and so much fun, and most of that is thanks to YOU. Although we’re excited to be back on the road and traveling the world again soon, we’re so thankful to lay a foundation here in Central Europe & bring you with us on this crazy journey. Thank you for supporting us and being part of this incredible community!

Finishing up INSULATION #diy #vanconversion #vanlife

Van Conversion FRAMING & INSULATION (Polyiso, Spray, Havelock in Ford Transit) | VAN BUILD #5

Insulation is very controversial in the van community. After much research, we decided on a combination of insulation materials - our goal to find a balance in regards to cost and effectiveness. We don’t want to compromise quality but also want to keep our build within a reasonable budget.

Make sure to watch our next episode where we finish insulating the van with Havelock wool and use free materials to finish the ceiling and wall:

SOUND DEADENING MATERIAL & DUCT INSULATION:
We decided NOT to use a sound deadening product such as Rattletrap or MAT66:

1) The purpose of a sound deadener in a van is to dampen road noise and reduce vibrations in the metal panels. Our van came with 3 pieces of this type of material already applied to the center panels of the roof. We’ve seen vanlifers cover their entire van with sound deadening material even though it’s got a diminishing return on value once you exceed a certain coverage percentage. Before buying our van, we planned to use this type of material because it seems like every van build we watched used it but once we actually had our van, we didn’t find it to be very loud at all when we drove it. Even when we tapped on the panels of our van, most areas didn’t seem to vibrate or rattle much.

2) When we researched popular sound deadeners, we found that costs seemed to range from approximately $1.50-2.50 per square foot. We decided this is an expense we can forgo.

3) During our search, we ran across alternative products: Frost King Duct Self Adhesive Foil & Foam Insulation and E-Z Cool Car Insulation. While they aren’t traditional sound deadeners, their properties seem to provide some of the same noise and vibration reduction as Rattletrap and similar products, especially the Frost King, PLUS they provide insulation and can be used as a vapor barrier and blocker of thermal conduction. They also seem to be lighter weight than Rattletrap. For the area above our bed platform where our mattress will go, we needed to be able to preserve as much space as possible in order for the mattress to fit and for us to be able to sleep sideways. We don’t have a lot of space to spare for insulation or extra materials. We needed something that will insulate but not hog too much space. We chose Frost King. Duct insulation is not something we see commonly used in van builds. This type of insulation is designed for HVAC ducts and water pipes to decrease heat loss, prevent sweating or dripping from cold pipes, and to cushion and reduce vibrations. It also has an R-value of 2, is a much cheaper option than most sound deadening materials at around $1/sq ft, and is only about ⅛” thick.

SOFT INSULATION FOR LARGE AREAS:
Fiberglass vs Rock wool vs Havelock sheep wool vs Thinsulate

Fiberglass Insulation: Cheapest option but it absorbs moisture and it material can be a skin and lung irritant, possibly exacerbated by all the vibrations from driving

Rock Wool: Much cheaper than sheep wool or Thinsulate, decent r-value, and a convenient size for filling large areas, but may also have potentially harmful fibers. We read several arguments for and against the safety of rock wool and almost purchased some. But then we had a hard time sourcing it in our area.

Thinsulate: Most expensive option, decent r-value, doesn’t retain moisture, good noise insulation, no irritating fibers. Too expensive for us and a little more challenging to install.

Sheep Wool: Higher r-value, natural, good noise insulation, and very easy to work with. Less expensive than Thinsulate but more expensive than fiberglass and rockwool. Because we had some extra cash from the government COVID stimulus package, we decided to spend a little more and splurge on the wool! (Check out the next episode.)

RIGID FOAM INSULATION:
XPS and Polyiso foam insulation both have a very high r-value. We chose XPS for the floor because it doesn’t compress like other insulations. We chose Polyiso for the ceiling and some wall cavities because we found some free that had been thrown out at a construction site and we couldn’t find any reasons not to use it, especially as we’ll double it up with the sheep wool.

So far, we are very happy with the materials we have chosen. With the traveling we have done, the insulation seems to make quite a difference with keeping the van cool and quiet!

SPRAY FOAM:
We used spray foam only to fill in cracks around the rigid foam insulation and small areas we couldn’t access with sheep wool.

Day 7 VAN CONVERSION, Insulation and Expanding Foam

Hello everyone!
Welcome to our van build series. We will be documenting our journey and showing you how we decided to do our van step by step. Hopefully you'll find this useful.
Our van is a 2014 MWB Mercedes Benz Sprinter.

We have gone out and bought more white insulation boards from Wickes as it is so easy to work with and is cheaper than the Kingspan, it is purely personal choice whatever insulation you choose as every van has a different shape interior and some insulation will fit and work better than others.

Here is the link to the things we used in this video:

White insulation boards:

Expanding foam:

Vanlife: Which insulation is the best?

#vanlife #Sheepswool #insulation

Sheeps wool is the best material for insulating a van, it is the most environmentally friendly as well as providing many other benefits. In this DYI series on converting a van into a camper, rv, adventure mobile I will discuss why I think Sheepswool is the best option while also discussing other popular materials.

I used Isolena wool produced by a nice family run business in Austria called Lehner.

Here is a link to their brochure that has tons of helpful information.

Should You SPRAY FOAM your van? | Insulating Our Tiny Home On Wheels

After getting all of the electrical wiring pulled, windows framed and various other tedious things to complete the foundation of the van we are finally ready for one of the biggest things we have been waiting for - Insulating Our Sprinter Van! We went back and forth on the question of should you spray foam your van or go with regular insulation, sheeps wool, etc. After much research they all seemed to be be fairly close in what they had to offer so we devided to go with getting the spray foam done on the van. Getting the van spray foamed feels like a huge step towards completion.

Why did we choose to spray foam our van? It is rated very high for regulating temperatures, it really firms up the bones of the van and having Frank Barber of Frank’s Spray Foam be able to do it for us was such a help! The biggest thank you to Frank for doing the insulation for us.

Follow along on our Van Build Series to watch as we convert a Mercedes Sprinter 170 4x4 over the next couple of months into a fully off grid van!

Sprinter VAN CONVERSION Insulation ፧ Sprinter Van Build

Hola Amigees!

We went back and forth for several weeks on what we were going to do with insulation. Ultimately what we decided was to use FrothPak spray foam kits and DIY it.

Options we considered:
Foam Board: Inexpensive, semi permanent, squeaky, time consuming to cut and insert.
Wool Insulation: Lower cost, but not inexpensive, Decent R Value, Moisture and Mold Resistant, but costs almost as much to ship as the product does itself.
Denim: Environmentally conscious, Lower Cost, Decent R Value, but not mold or moisture resistant
3M Thinsulate: Lower R Value for Higher Cost, easy to install and stuff in tight spaces
Spray Foam: Best Cost for R Value, Quickest Installation Time, but it's permanent and it will off-gas for several days after installation

We know people have had bad experiences with foam insulation before, but we were willing to take a chance after discussing options among ourselves, doing our own research, and consulting others who have taken different and similar approaches on their builds.

We do not believe there are BAD decisions when it comes to insulation, because everyone's purpose behind their build is wildly different. (Besides maybe using reflectix only, but that's a completely different discussion.)

Full disclaimer: We likely would have gone with Havelock Wool if the cost to ship would have been more reasonable, but we also understand Havelock is a small business and the cost to ship products is a burden that unfortunately they cannot assume on their own.

Life is good.
