Most deadly rockfall landslide hits Himachal Pradesh, destroys bridge like a hundred missiles fired

What tragedy struck the town of Batseri, and the tourists visiting it, on 25th July 2021, a Sunday afternoon.

While this has been a huge tragedy that our contributor Sagar witnessed and filmed at Batseri over the weekend, there are take-aways that this sad incident can give the world, to help ensure that such incidents are fewer and far between in the future... There are lessons thatHimalayan tourists and local residents can learn from this tragedy, in order to avoid such incidents.

We definitely need better outreach and disaster management and planning in the Himalaya, on a local and regional level. Had the previous day's warning signs and smaller landslides been heeded, the town of Batseri could have been evacuated and the Batseri-Sangla-Chitkul road closed until further notice. We need to encourage plantation of appropriate species of trees on all bare hillsides that are not naturally bare or covered by grasslands, to bind the soil and slopes better, and act as rock and landslide brakes.

Our contributor Sagar showed tremendous presence of mind to continue to film the rockfall despite being in the direct line of the rocks falling. His room and its windows were also attacked by the rocks.

“The hill top is highly prone to landslides. We have been observing the shooting stones from the hill top for the last two days. Yesterday too, a vehicle was damaged but luckily no one was injured,” said Pradeep Negi, Pradhan, Batseri panchayat. On Sunday, nine tourists were killed when the boulders fell on their Tempo Traveller, while they were heading towards Sangla from Chitkul village.

According to Deputy Commissioner (Kinnaur), Abid Hussain Sadique, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when multiple landslides, triggered by recent rainfall, collapsed a bridge and damaged vehicles on the Batseri-Sangla road. -

A viral video shot by wildfilmsindia contributor Sagar showed boulders rolling downhill, causing the bridge to collapse. The entire bridge collapses as the result of the one of the boulders falling like a missile from above.. We carry this frightening video with due humility for those who lost their lives, in the hope that we can use this for tourism awareness and education in the Himalaya, and for local level awareness and disaster management preparedness.

INCREDIBLE COLLAPSE TRIGGERED BY GLACIER CALVING | South America, Chile

An incredibly large chunk of the Grey Glacier's ice-sheet breaks off and flips over in a spectacular way in Southern Patagonia, Chile. The ice-sheet of the Grey Glacier is currently declining due to increasing temperatures and changes in rainfall. It is part of the 'Southern Patagonian Ice Field', the world's 2nd largest contiguous extrapolar ice field and the largest freshwater reservoir in South America.

The Grey Glacier is famous for insane glacier wall collapses during the summer when large icebergs – often up to 100 feet in height – are breaking off the glacier and collapsing into the water of the 'Lago Grey'. In the right time of the year big blocks of ice break off the glacier and drop into the water. The waves created by such glacier calving events often splash dozens of meters through the air. The glacier itself is about 6 km (3.7 mi) wide and has an average height of over 30 m (100 ft) above the surface of the water.

Thankfully, no-one was injured as boats stay at a safe distance from the glacier (for a good reason).

Glacier calving, also known as ice calving, or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. The sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier or iceberg often causes large waves around the area and can result in a shooter which is a large chunk of the submerged portion of the iceberg surfacing above the water. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. (Find out more here:

Massive rockfall caught on video on Piz Cengalo mountain in Switzerland

Ralf Dujmovits, Salomé von Rotz and Nancy Hansen were climbing the Cassin Route on Piz Badile in Switzerland's Bergell Range when they captured this incredible moment. The unstable north wall of neighboring peak Piz Cengalo was spitting large blocks of rock all morning. In early afternoon, the mountain let go of a huge amount of granite, as seen in this video. But they knew it still wasn't the big event the Swiss geologists and engineers were expecting - that happened two days later. An estimated four million cubic meters of rock came down, causing several deaths, chaos and evacuations of huts and villages.

Yosemite Falls Trail - the SCARY part for me - maybe not you (2015)

Enjoy uncut GoPro Head Strap footage of the SCARY part for me of Yosemite Falls Trail, the six-minute descent to the Upper Fall Overlook (starts at 02:00). If you have acrophobia, this trail might not be for you. I overcame my fears four times now, I think that's enough. While there wasn't much water falling during another California drought, the grueling 2700' climb and descent was still every bit as spectacular. Along on this hike for the first time were my Danish cousins Mads and Tine, and Mads's daughter Anna. Wife Carol is the gal I'm following down to the overlook. I had no idea I was touching her while walking. For those of you critical of my filmmaking, keep in mind Im an amateur just sharing my hike. We were out for a walk when I heard an almighty crack, there had been some slides earlier that day on that spot but the cracks just got louder and bigger so started to video it. Apologies for the quality, I only had a 5 yr old Fujifilm camera with me...
