LAUFENBURG: 1 Village, 2 Countries: Between SWITZERLAND and GERMANY [Travel Guide]

Laufenburg is one of the most beautiful villages of Switzerland… and also of Germany. How is it possible that this village is though part of two countries? Laufenburg was built at the river Rhine and has been under the rule of several powers until it ended up in today’s format. Laufenburg charms with its tranquility, the many alleys and beautiful houses. Both sides are similar, the Swiss one has though visibly more flags, while the German site does not. The two sides of Laufenburg are connected through a bridge, which allows easy switching between the two countries. Today, Laufenburg is part of Baden-Württemberg and the Canton of Aargau. The village was under the French rule, until it was then split, giving the larger part with the centre to the Canton Fricktal, which later merged into today’s canton of Aargau, while the part on the right side of the Rhine was given to the Grand-Duchy of Baden. Today, the village might be split into two countries, but feels like it was one: both sides keep the same name, Laufenburg Switzerland and Laufenburg Germany, people freely switch between both sides and the houses and image in both countries are the same. Laufenburg is perfect to combine with the nearby cities of Zürich and Basel. From Laufenburg, you even can take a train (Deutsche Bahn, that line is mostly on time) to Basel. This is the cheapest way for you to proceed from Laufenburg to Basel. There is another similar Swiss village that is also split into two parts, just further down the Rhine, you may visit Rheinfelden, that carries the same name on both sides of the river.

Luxury, romance and a fairytale atmosphere — that's how we imagine life at the medieval Eltz Castle. But what is it really like to live there? Spoiler: there are 80 rooms, all of which require a little maintenance. DW's Hannah Hummel asks owner Jakob Graf zu Eltz about life at the castle back then and now. The castle resident has even set up his home office there. Would that be something for you, too?

10 Most Beautiful Castles in Switzerland

Switzerland is a small country that sits smack dab in the middle of the Alps, making for 360-degree scenery wherever a person finds themselves. Numerous lakes also add to the picture postcard look of this country, whose most famous citizen may have been the fictional Heidi. From banks to bucolic alpine meadows, Switzerland has it all. An overview of the best places to visit in Switzerland:

Switzerland Tour | Kamiya Jani's 5-Day Itinerary | Curly Tales

The snow-capped mountains, beautiful lakes and impeccable natural beauty. Sigh! If there is one European place every Bollywood buff in India wishes to visit, Switzerland would be it! With many Indian films being shot in this European paradise, I just had to visit this place to satiate the filmy girl in me. Read more about my experience:

While I had been longing to visit this places for years, it only worked out a week before my actual departure. My unapproved leaves got approved, I got a cheap airfare alert and I also had a valid Schengen visa. It was literally the case of - The Mountains Are Calling.

10 Exciting things to do in Switzerland | Travel

Switzerland is a country with a lot to offer, from alpine lakes to dramatic cliff faces and waterfalls to modern cities and flower-filled meadows. The country has an active army, and males are required to complete military service. Women are allowed to serve but not all males do so. There are extensive defensive systems and enough bunkers to withstand a nuclear war. If you've always wanted to visit Switzerland, you've come to the right place. Here are some interesting facts about Switzerland:

Switzerland is officially called the Swiss Confederation. People call it Die Schweiz in German, La Suisse in French, and Svizra in Romansch. In Latin, it's called Confoederatio Helvetica, and the word Helvetia means the Helvetes.

Switzerland's banking laws have evolved over the years, protecting clients' privacy and combating tax evasion. Switzerland also boasts some of the world's greatest inventors, including the Swiss army knife. Famous Swiss inventions include the potato peeler, Absinth, LSD, and edible chocolate.
