Regional Eats: What Foods To Eat in Costa Rica

SUBSCRIBE:

Costa Rica is well known for its lush rainforests, epic surf spots, and three-toed sloths, but its food scene is also worthy of attention. Costa Rica’s rich culinary culture is strongly influenced by the dizzying array of fruits and veggies made possible by the same biodiversity and microclimates that make it a destination for nature lovers.

Regional Eats: Eating Through China's Spicy Sichuan Province

Brother and sister team Danny and Krista Simmons travel to Chengdu and Emei to explore the diverse culinary culture and regional cuisine of the Sichuan province, which is home to one of the most popular styles of Chinese cooking in the US. They dive into the area's deep cultural history through its notoriously spicy food, and gain a deeper appreciation for the people who prepare it. Mapo tofu, kung pao chicken, hot pot, dumplings, and piping hot pork noodle soup are just a few of the dishes you’ll see in this travelogue, along with footage of Chengdu’s panda bear sanctuary, the UNESCO heritage site of Mount Emeishan, and the magnificent people of the Sichuan province. This is part two in the Simmons' series on China, which they produced together in the summer of 2014.

10 Reasons to Move to Costa Rica

10 Reasons to Move to Costa Rica

Our special guests talk about the many greats reasons people from all around the world want to and should move to Costa Rica.

Our special guests were:

Michele Simmons from Playas del Coco - Costa Rica. Hostess at Don Bosco Sailing Tours and owner of Coco Babysitting Services.

Devon C Pickering from Playas del Coco. Owner of Hotel La Puerta del Sol and the Garden Bar in Playas del Coco Guanacaste.

Alain Mouquet from Costa Rica. Real Estate Agent with Remax Los Tres Amigos in Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste Costa Rica.

1 The Pura Vida Lifestyle

What may truly set Costa Rica apart from the rest of Central America is its dedication to the words “pura vida”. Pura vida is more than a phrase, it is a way of life. When locals say “pura vida” it is a reminder to themselves and the rest of the world to relax, let things go, and be grateful for what you have.

2 Happiest People in the World

For the third time in less than a decade, Costa Rica holds the prestigious title of “world’s happiest country,” scoring higher than 139 others on the 2019 Happy Planet Index (HPI).

3 Comfortable Climate Year Round

While there is a distinct wet and dry season in most of the country, temperatures on both coasts average between the high 70s and low 80s year round. Even in the rainy season there is typically some sunshine every day. This comfortable weather allows you to enjoy outdoor activities and nature every day of the year.

4 Amazing Things to Do

Beside having the most impressive wildlife in the world and with unlimited hiking trails, white water rafting, excellent swells for surfers, rivers for kayaking, and standup paddleboarding, Costa Rica is an adventure lovers dream. High adrenaline activities are very popular here including ziplining and bungee jumping. In Costa Rica, even a simple walk on your nearby beach can become an adventure.

5 Real Estate Opportunities

The people living in Costa Rica are warm and welcoming. The cost of living is not very high. And for people who are interested in investing their hard-earned money in real estate here, there is good news – real estate comes at a very affordable price.

6 Friendly Local Culture

Local Costa Ricans, Ticos, are some of the most hospitable, nature-loving, peace-oriented people on earth. They love their country and are welcoming to tourists and expats who love it too. Costa Rica has a 95% literacy rate and nationals are highly educated.

7 Its Proximity to North America

The capital city of San Jose is an airport hub for flights to North America and has inexpensive, direct flights to major cities in the U.S. including Houston, Fort Lauderdale, Boston, and New York. These flights often cost less than national flights across country. This makes it easy to stay close to family, have visitors, and run home to stock up on certain comforts that can’t be found in Central America.

8 The Established Expat Community

Because Costa Rica has been popular among expats for years it has a well-established supportive community in most of the coastal towns as well as in San Jose. These communities have created excellent schools for children, health-focused stores, markets, restaurants and cafes, and other practices like yoga, pilates, and bodywork.

9 Safety in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a safe country to visit for solo travelers. As long as you stay away from isolated areas, don't wave your valuables around, and don't travel alone at night you will be able to avoid the most common dangerous situations

10 Democracy in Costa Rica

Costa Ricans are the result of a peaceful nation with a long democratic tradition. Costa Rica is a peaceful nation, which has always avoided conflict and any military actions. Instead it has a conflict resolution based in negotiation and its efforts have been dedicated to develop social equality.
11 A Healthy Lifestyle

Eating less processed foods and more local fruits and vegetables, being outside with nature every day, and using your body to achieve more tasks are all changes that take place for most people who move to Costa Rica. Many report losing weight because they become much more physically active.

The slower-paced lifestyle and immersion in nature help one to fully relax which is incredibly health beneficial. Not to mention, outside of the city there is much less pollution and toxic fumes than cities in North America.

12 The Stable Government and Economy

Costa Rica abolished its army in 1950 and has kept its spot as one of the most stable democracies in the world since then. It is the only country in Latin America to make the list.
The economy is also experiencing steady growth with greater foreign investments as well as tourism which bodes well for those looking to

COSTA RICA VIDEO FAQ’S:

COSTA RICA FAQ’S:

Home Builders in Costa Rica

So, if you have decided to build a home in Uvita, Dominical, Ojochal or the surrounding areas of Perez Zeledon /San Isidro, there are various factors to consider above and beyond just finding a builder in the town of Uvita, and Central Pacific Zone. That’s the easy part. Having the General contractor and/or builder in Uvita, Dominical, or even Ojochal who is geared towards quality, and warranties their work is another matter.
Finding an honest and capable building contractor in the Southern Pacidic Zone which encompasses Dominical, Uvita and Ojochal presents its own unique set of challenges.
Foreigners, whether from The United States or Europe, have historically been seen as potential targets for fraud and general dishonesty in a variety of areas. Building a home in Costa Rica, specifically the Southern Pacific Zone (DOMINICAL, UVITA, OJOCHAL) is a daunting task and should inspire the informed decision to use real qualified professionals. The alternative has a historically unpleasant narrative.

Finding those who are not ethically challenged, and are truly capable of offering you turnkey services with a new, well built home are not easy to come by.

There are three possible outcomes when using those local builders in Uvita and Dominical and its neighbour to the South, Ojochal.
Local builders have either historically cut corners with material, abandoned a job outright, or have begun crying “poverty” when they’ve run out of funds to finish a build.
Which was underbid just to obtain the job.
The result typically is a mediocre, substandard home which then will generate a lifetime of problems. Why not build a home with a 2year warranty using a high end builder in Uvita and the Southern Pacific Zone?
We at GreenBuilt Costa Rica, working in Uvita and Ojochal, as well as the mountain outskirts of San Isidro, offer a far better and more comprehensive solution to the unique challenges presented when contemplating the decision to relocate and or invest in rental income property in the Southern Pacific Zone. We’ve got you covered from Quepos to Uvita, then 15 minutes south to Ojochal.
We are always in compliance with all building standards in this seismically active country, as established by the Association of Engineers and Architects of Costa Rica.
Compliance in Uvita doesn’t just end with building codes.
Compliance must now extend to the legal and taxation issues for Hacienda and Tributacion in Dominical and Uvita. It is a must if you’re going to invest in property which produces substantial rental income in the Southern Pacific Zone. Banking regulations have changed and non-compliance brings substantial penalties. Why not let our Legal and Accounting team ensure legal tax compliance, and by extension, your peace of mind? Shouldn’t your substantial investment in Uvita and Dominical be protected?
The areas of Dominical, Ojochal, and Uvita are nature sensitive.
All construction should consider the natural characteristics of each specific build site found in Uvita and Dominical, such as the direction of rain and winds, sun movement over the course of the year, temperature and erosion control. The finished product must be a functional structure that complements the natural beauty of the surroundings, creating a sustainable footprint in exchange for the privilege of living in harmony with nature. We can talk about solar panel systems as well
At Green Built Costa Rica, working in Uvita, Ojochal and Dominical, we address the smallest of design details integrating functionality with aesthetics. The results consider real life conditions where the structure will be built, while incorporating modern and tropical design concepts that are in compliance with all building standards of the country, and specifically the Southern pacific Zone.
For seismic code compliance and quality standards, we add materials that improve the landscape using Morejon Stone, slab, gravel, granite, Coralina Stone, among other products. Should the customer prefer, we can use imported materials direct from Bali, Indonesia and custom fabricate unique details.
Green Built Costa Rica’s construction in Costa Rica, specifically in the Southern Pacific Zone, goes way beyond the average or typical build, delivering an outstanding product so you can sleep well at night. You will rest assured knowing that your investment was built using products that will maintain your satisfaction over the coming decades.
