I left Accra,Ghana for Dakar, Senegal. Here's WHY.
It's the first week of 2022; what better time to share a story of risk and immense change. While this change didn't happen for me at the beginning of the year, it could be helpful to you if you're considering a similar change in your own life (as most people are at the beginning of each year).
In April 2021, I left my much-loved hometown, Accra, Ghana, for Dakar, Senegal. I share what inspired this move and some of the significant differences between my day-to-day life in Accra vs. Dakar.

I have made it to the West African nation of Liberia (country 178) and I am shocked to see how much it reminds me of home!!! Everything from the country flag to the government system, sports culture, school curriculum, and even the yellow school buses are shockingly similar to the United States, and you will find out why in this video!

WE JUST COMPLETED THE MOST INSANE 10 day road trip across West Africa!! Wow, I cannot believe how many stories we have to tell for the rest of our lives.
I've been traveling with my Spanish buddy Alvaro, who is now 1 country away from visiting every country in the world, and we both agree that this has been one of the most difficult trips of our lives both mentally and physically. It's a logistical nightmare to plan, not to mention the constant corruption and bribery at every police checkpoint and border crossing.
But we did it.
And looking back already, it was an incredible trip and one for the memories. Thank you to everyone who followed our journey along the way! Many more stories to come from Senegal and then onwards to the Middle East and Central Africa!

We grabbed our gopro and hit the streets of downtown Dakar. This video is raw and all filmed on our small inconspicuous gopro, which is a little out of the ordinary for us, but we were able to capture much more real moments this way! We hope you enjoy our video of American's first impressions of Dakar, Senegal.
We had no idea what to expect, but we loved everything about the craziness and madness of downtown Dakar. It's unlike anything we've experienced so far, and although we would probably recommend going with a tour company if you're only in Dakar for a short period of time, if you are adventurous, we think walking the streets of downtown Dakar is the best way to experience the authentic side of Senegal.

Meet Modou, one of the most inspiring people in Senegal!
Nearly every single day, he walks alone in the hot streets of Dakar, dressed in a plastic suit from head to toe.
Why does he do this?
To protest against the severe plastic waste, and urge people to care more for the environment.
He got inspired to do this after serving in the army some 20 years ago. Not only did he protect his fellow citizens, but he also learned about the importance to protect our mother earth.
West Africa, much like other regions of the world (I'm looking at you, South East Asia) have a horrible problem of overconsumption of single-use plastic. Thanks to people like Modou, we can educate the local population about the issues that plastic brings, and force them to alter their lifestyles.

Boutique Hotel Djoloff Dakar, Senegal
Using this hotel was a no-brainer for us since it was the tour operator's choice. Rooms are small (we booked a superior room and I can only imagine what a standard room is like) but chicly decorated, staff friendly, and nice terrace.

I was impressed by Diego the sailmaker's professionalism and savoir faire. Diego has decades of experience, the materials and a family to feed. As well, I like to see and feel where my modest earnings go to. My philosophy is to do what I do best and let others do what they do best. Me I sail, travel and make videos. And meet people as you will see in this episode.
