Akaroa is a cute little french town 1 hours drive from Christchurch, new Zealand in the banks peninsula! We see hector dolphins in Akaroa (Akaroa dolphins) we also see the Akaroa alpacas at a farm called sharrama alapcas Akaroa. Akaroa has to be one of my fav plcaes in the south island of new Zealand

The Giants House in Akaroa/Banks Peninsula, New Zealand
Akaroa and the Banks Peninsula is only a short approximately 1.5 hour drive away from Christchurch. Akaroa is known as the most French town in New Zealand given that the beautiful, charming, harbour-side town was the only French settlement in NZ.
Banks Peninsula was originally an island formed by two volcanic cones. It has two dominant craters which form Lyttelton and Akaroa Harbours.
On the way to Akaroa we stopped off at Montgomery Park Scenic Reserve along Summit Road to check out a massive totara tree, believed to be about 2,000 years old, as well as a scenic viewpoint over Akaroa Harbour.
The Giants House, Akaroa is only about a 20 mins drive away from the ancient totara. The entire landscape is brimming with flowers throughout the manicured gardens and it's filled with fantastical mosaic sculptures too. This quirky, colourful and delightful place is the creation of artist and horticulturalist, Josie Martin.

For lunch we ate at the beachside restaurant, Harbar. Friendly staff, great food and an unobstructed view of Akaroa Harbour, we were totally on holiday mood.

Akaroa, New Zealand | 4K Walking Tour
Akaroa is a small town on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand, situated within a harbour of the same name. The name Akaroa is Kāi Tahu Māori for Long Harbour, which would be spelled Whangaroa in standard Māori. The area was also named Port Louis-Philippe by French settlers after the reigning French king Louis Philippe I.
The town is set on a sheltered harbour and is overlooked and surrounded by the remnants of a miocene volcano. Akaroa is entirely dependent upon rainfall on the hills.
Akaroa is a popular resort town. Many Hector's dolphins may be found within the harbour, and 'swim with the dolphins' boat tours are a major tourist attraction.

New Zealand has a lot of quirky towns (in a good way) but we were told to expect a very different vibe in Akaroa. So rather than just go straight to Christchurch we decided at least an afternoon exploring Akaroa and a night at the local campgrounds would be needed. Is Akaroa the most French spot in NZ? Haha it would appear so! Such a cool place to explore.
Speaking of exploring - Castle Hill might look like a bunch of ancient ruins from drunk castles, but they're actually limestone formations from 30+ million years ago.
2 particularly random and unique NZ locations to explore that we absolutely loved! Including the odd and lonely stay out at Porter Lodge as well!

Our exploration of Akaroa brings us to the Giant’s House in Akaroa – a garden full of mosaic sculptures and water features. It’s the most colourful New Zealand garden you’ll ever see!
After the Akaroa Giants House we venture to the Akaroa Lighthouse. It’s a lighthouse that unusually sits in the middle of the harbour rather than at the end of it.

Campervan Travels Across New Zealand - Pt 2: East Coast of South Island: Dunedin Akaroa Christchurch
I leave the upper fiords of Fiordland National Park and head south to the oceanic banks of the South Island of New Zealand. I spot native seals and sea lions resting in the sand dunes, get acquainted with the natural topography of the land, and just cruise along the coastline looking for the rare yellow-eyed penguins.

Akaroa is located on the Banks Peninsula, 40km southeast of Christchurch, New Zealand. This place has a beautiful landscape formed by the erosion of volcanos.

There are 3 NZMCA campsites in and around Christchurch, we was staying in NZMCA Park Kaiapoi, 15 km away from CBD Christchurch and in NZMCA Park Weedons, 20 km away from Christchurch CBD.

There's a freedom campsite in Akaroa , but you need to be there around lunchtime, otherwise all places are gone. As an alternative you can camp in Wainui, its much cheaper then the campsite in Akaroa (NZ $ 15 pp)

Akaroa New Zealand The South Island
Akaroa is a town on the Banks Peninsula, southeast of Christchurch, New Zealand. Akaroa Beach is on the eastern shore of Akaroa Harbour, where rare Hector’s dolphins swim. The Akaroa Museum includes 3 heritage buildings and chronicles the town’s development, especially its 19th-century British and French colonial history.
