Come join us for a Slovenian Food Review as eat a delicious meal in Ljubljana, Slovenia at Allegria restaurant trying several different traditional Slovenian dishes including wine, mains and dessert. As like the Bosnian cuisine we tried at Sarajevo 84 this was our very first time to try Slovenian cuisine and we were excited and eager to dig right in. 1) Slovenian carniolan sausage (kranjska klobasa) with sauerkraut cabbage mashed rooty potatoes
2) Slovenian stuffed pasta (Idrijski žlikrofi) with a lamb ragout (similar to goulash)
3) Slovenian dessert (prekmurska gibanica) a puffed pastry from Prekmurje made with eight different layers including raisins, apples, walnuts, seeds, poppy seeds and cottage cheese
4) Slovenian red wine (Refošk red dry - Vina Koper)

Slovenian Food Review - Trying traditional Slovenian dishes in Ljubljana, Slovenia Travel Video Transcript:

Well hello hello and welcome to another food video. Today we're having lunch here in Ljubljana so we figured we need to show you what Slovenian food is all about. Now I've never had Slovenian food before ever because I don't think it is really popular outside of Europe but um Sam brought us to Allegria. He spotted this place yesterday so we are here. We've ordered our wine. We've got our basket of bread so let's get to it.

Sam and I both got the same red wine. And what is the biggest surprise with this? Yes, the local red. Biggest surprise is now that we've had two restaurant meals here in Ljubljana is that they typically serve the red wine chilled.

The food arrived pretty quickly so let me show you my dish first. I ordered the grilled Slovenian sausage (kranjska klobasa) with sauerkraut or cabbage and this kind of like purple-y potato so let's just dig right in. Look it is like a double sausage actually. It looks big. Let's divide it. Big and juicy.

It is a really nice way to be starting our Slovenian cuisine experience. Yeah, and now we're moving on to what Sam ordered.

Sam is going in for the Idrijski žlikrofi I believe it is called.

Yes. We could totally be butchering it. And inside is basically pork, herbs and onions.

And it comes with a lamb ragout. It looks so good. I'm making sure to get a bit of lamb.

This is just so good. Such hearty food. Yeah? Again not spicy at all though. It is just like kind of that comfort savory food. And I really like the pasta. It is actually quite densely stuffed.

Well dessert has arrived. It sure has. Here before us we have a traditional Slovenian dessert (prekmurska gibanica) whose name I cannot pronounce. But I can tell you the ingredients. It is basically kind of like a puffed pastry like with lots of little crispy layers and inside it has apples, cottage cheese, walnuts and sometimes it can have raisins. It also has poppyseed and it has all been dusted with a little bit of icing sugar.

Another very filling meal here in Ljubljana, Slovenia. I have to say.. And in terms of price point that came to 28 Euros so that included two glasses of red wine, two mains and a dessert to share. It is packed outside and it is packed inside so it is a great restaurant. I'd highly recommend coming here in Ljubljana.

This is part of our Travel in Slovenia video series showcasing Slovenian food, Slovenian culture and Slovenian cuisine.

10 Must Try Foods/Drinks in Slovenia

✅Best-Selling travel gear
????Booking.com Deals

Bordered by four countries and with a long, varied history of being a part of different states and empires, Slovenia is today an independent country with a beautiful melody of languages, cultures and cuisines.

Welcome to ThingsToDo CHannel we publish new videos every day, so be sure to subscribe and don't forget to ring the bell to be updated on our latest videos.

Check out these 10 must-try Slovenian foods and drinks that recall the history of its neighbors and its landscapes.

Slovenian craft beer.

If you’re eating Slovenian food, you’ll want to accompany it with Slovenian beer (pivo). Slovenian beer is in the midst of a renaissance. Although mass-produced domestic brands like Lasko and Union still dominate the market, new microbreweries are continually popping up and pumping out a range of quality Slovenian craft beers.

Carniolan Sausage.

For its size, Slovenia packs a mighty punch on the gastronomy scene: there are 23 gastronomic regions and 170 distinct dishes claimed by this small central European country.

Slovenian wine.

Slovenia has been growing grapes and producing wine for thousands of years. The country has over 28,000 vineyards and produces between 80 and 90 million litres of wine every year.

Gibanica.

Gibanica is a layered cake filled with poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, raisins, and ricotta. It’s probably the most popular sweet in Slovenia and is typically eaten for breakfast. The cake originally hails from the Prekmurje region in the country’s far northeast (bordering Hungary), but you’ll find it all over the country.

Slovenian Spirits.

While Slovenians love beer and wine, there’s really only one national drink: schnapps. Called zganje in the local lingo, making the stuff is also a national past-time, and although you can buy factory-made bottles of schnapps in liquor stores and supermarkets, it’s the locally made zganje brewed in someone’s garage that’s usually the best. Thankfully, you don’t have to know anyone to sample some of the finest schnapps in Slovenia, because you can count on all self-respecting bars across the country to stock some of the best local varieties in a wide variety of flavors, including pear, peach, lemon, and blueberry.

Grilled Trout.

Home to many beautiful lakes and countless rivers and mountain streams, Slovenia is a country where fish is often found on menus. The ultimate fish to try in Slovenia is river trout. After a day of outdoor fun, make sure to order a whole grilled trout with some mashed potatoes on the side. If you’re going to have any traditional Slovenian food, let it be grilled trout.

Veal Stew with Lard and Buckwheat Mush.

As a historically rural country with a significant agricultural background, Slovenia loves its stews. There are many different types of stews, their ingredients ranging from vegetables to all types of meats and even actual intestines. This fantastic veal stew with lard and the typical complementary buckwheat mush before heading out for a hike in the Julian Alps in Triglav National Park.

Cheese Dumplings.

Another typical Slovenian food is cheese dumplings. These dumplings contain cottage cheese and are sometimes sprinkled with a little bit of sugar to give it a somewhat sweet taste. Served with sour cream, this is another hearty Slovenian dish—excellent to fill your stomach after an active day of sightseeing.

Steak with Truffles.

Truffles are a much-used ingredient in Istria, the coastal region that extends between Slovenia and northern Croatia. This quaint region is home to extensive old oak forests, which happen to be the perfect habitat for truffles. As it is rather difficult to find good truffles—dogs are specifically trained to find truffles that are buried deep in between the oaks’ roots—they tend to be quite pricey. It’s absolutely worth splurging on a dish that contains truffles, though. They taste, unlike any other mushroom that you’ve ever tasted.

Slovenian Doughnuts: Krofi.

Every culture seems to have its own fried dough and of course, we want to try them all. Krofi are special because they come with a beautiful, bright hint of citrus, thanks to lemon zest. Try krofi that has a layer of apricot jam inside- a favorite Slovenian flavor.

Best Restaurants in Slovenia and fine dining in Ljubljana [a guide to food in Slovenia]

Ljubljana, Slovenia is full of culinary delights from its regional cuisine to Balkan, Mediterranean and Alpine influences. The Slovenian kitchen features delicious meals dish by dish.

Here are a few of my top Slovenian Food tips worth checking out during your culinary adventure around Ljubljana.

It starts with having breakfast at the top of the castle courtyard at Gostilna na gradu, then having lunch at the Open Kitchen concept in the city centre of Ljubljana on a Friday. Each stand is specially selected as being the best at what they do in Slovenia and the options available on the day are always world-class.

For dinner head to Landerik, for fine dining in Ljubljana. This new local restaurant has recently opened in the old part of Ljubljana. What makes Landerik so unique is that everything in the restaurant is locally sourced from Slovenia.

Go for some traditional Slovenian food at Druga Violina, a very special little Gostilna-style restaurant with good food and who are employing several people with special needs.

But the food does not end in Ljubljana. For some of the best restaurants in Slovenia, you should definitely head into the surrounding region. Eat at the organic farm stay Trnulja, where you can try traditional Slovenian food. You will not leave with an empty stomach, that's for sure as a lot of the food is produced at the farm.

Grič restaurant is located in the village of Šentjošt nad Horjulom, and it’s a different type of concept restaurant. Expect the menu to change frequently and always be up for a delicious surprise.

If you enjoy a good glass of wine, which fits nicely with your meal, then the restaurant Repnik won't disappoint you. The local sommelier can recommend you the perfect matching wine to your chosen dish.

We're Colton and Nikki, husband and wife, who didn't want to settle into the default lifestyle and decided to go on a great adventure. After saving for a year and a half, quitting our jobs, selling all of our stuff, and buying a one-way ticket, we're traveling the world to go beyond the norm. We'll explore amazing places, eat a TON of yummy food, and share it all in weekly videos. Follow along with us!
