My adrenaline was through the roof and my heart was exploding with joy. I got to pet, walk and sit with lions and and cheetah in Livingstone, Zambia. It was absolutely terrifying and incredibly amazing at the same time. These are such powerful and majestic animals, and this whole experience was a 'once in a lifetime'. I went with the Makuni Big 5 Safaris, and they were the best.

We Walked with CHEETAHS and LIONS in South Africa!
In this vlog we walked with CHEETAHS and LIONS in South Africa, Matteo basically gets a bath from a cheetah, as we pet them and play with them! We went to Big Cat Experiences located in Limpopo, about 2 hours from Johannesburg, and not too far from Mabula Game Reserve. All of their experiences are tailored around the welfare and conservation of their animals, allowing you to enjoy an unforgettable experience as you join them in their natural habitat for a thrilling adventure!

Johannesburg: Lion & Safari Park is a conservation enclosure for lions, cheetahs, hyena, wild dogs and various antelope. It is located in the Cradle of Humankind in the North West province of South Africa. The Lion & Safari Park was originally a wildlife conservation enclosure for lions located in the Gauteng province in South Africa. In 2016, the park relocated to new premises of 600 hectare (ca. 1,500 acre) in the Cradle of Humankind in the North West province. The park is situated north of Lanseria Airport within driving distance of Johannesburg and Pretoria. It has a large variety of predators and large herbivores indigenous to Africa. The Lion & Safari Park is home to over 80 lions including the rare white lions and many other carnivores such as South African cheetah, Cape wild dog, hyena and spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, and a wide variety of antelope which roam freely in the antelope area. The antelope area, containing giraffe, warthog, blesbok, gnu, impala, gemsbok, and zebra, is in a separate area away from the lions and other carnivores. In addition to the animal enclosures the new park has a childrens play area, restaurants, conference facilities and a retail centre within five small domes. Guests are also able to hand-feed giraffes, ostriches and antelope. Twice a day the park also offers Lion walks and Cheetah walks in which clients, in the company of a park employee, follow the animal for a short walk within the park. [wikipedia // Google]

The safari company called Mukuni Big 5 Safaris is based out of the Zambia, Africa. The small country in central Africa were one may find the border of Zimbabwe as well as Botswana and Namibia. You can experience walking cheetahs, Lyons, and elephants, all with the Mukuni Big Five safaris.
To actually be able to see these animals up close was a dream for me. Ever since I was a little kid I would always dreamed about meeting cheetahs and real life. It wasn't until I started living in Ethiopia and visited Africa that I would find out that this was actually possible. The city where one may visit is called living things Zambia home of the popular Victoria Falls.
There are actually other attractions as well that one may experience in addition to walking with cheetahs. Some of these experiences include safaris, bungee jumping, walking on the edge of the cliff of the waterfalls and swimming in the doubles pool,. I would like to give a special shout out to my Mukuni Big Five Safaris and Jolly boys in Zambia (hostel in Zambia).
This experience was sponsored by both of these companies and they were exceptional. There are tons of outdoor activities to experience in the city including white water rafting and other special events as well.

A Word of Warning
I would like to point out that I’m fully aware of the horrors in South African petting zoos and so-called “Lion Encounters” & Cheetah Walks (the country South Africa, not the region).
Laws are very different in other countries. Namibia, e.g. does not even allow the breeding of wild animals and Zimbabwe and Botswana also have much stricter rules.
The program I’m describing is in Zimbabwe, near Victoria Falls, and is the original “Lion Encounter”. It is run by an organization that tries to repatriate captive-bred lions back into the wild and the Lion Encounter for tourists is a side program, done under very strict rules as I am describing in the article.
Sadly, the South African canned hunting industry quickly saw the potential of these activities and turned them into profit schemes that would also provide an ever continuing flow of aging animals to be abused for canned hunting.
“Canned hunting” means, a wild animal is put in a small enclosure, so any amateur, wannabee trophy hunter can shoot it from a close and safe distance - and then pose with a picture.
Absolutely despicable and horrific, but unfortunately rampant in South Africa (and I LOVE that country otherwise!).
So please do not support Lion Encounters, Cheetah Walks or Petting Zoos in South Africa.
Fortunately, there are also a lot of efforts by animal activists to educate the public, most notably in the documentary “Blood Lions” - with the result, however, that every program is now branded bad, usually without any fact checking or distinction.
I’m very careful when I write about animal programs and so far have only recommended 2 in all of Africa:
Na’ankuse in Namibia (also actively supported by Angelina Jolie)
and this program in Victoria Falls.
Unlike its greedy counterparts, this program, together with ALERT is aimed at replenishing the dying wild lion population by training captive bred lions to hunt again and survive in the wild.
Numerous top media organizations have reported on them - most notably:
CNN
BBC
ITV's Lion Country
Animal Planet's Roaring with Pride
In fact, the BBC was so sceptical initially that they investigated this program for a full year before they agreed to film it - and now they will return in the coming year when the first group of lions is released into the wild.
I very much appreciate feedback, especially when it concerns the well-being of animals and I’m always eager to learn something new. So whenever you do have solid facts and proof, first hand knowledge - not a link to some blog or forum - but real provable facts specific to the programs I’m writing about - I’m always interested to hear!
What I do not tolerate and will delete in the comments section are baseless accusations, rumors and links to unverified blogs or forums. Those are not facts, but insinuations and often slander - and I will not partake in that.
