In this video, we explore AlUla, an ancient city located in the northwestern region of Saudi Arabia. AlUla is home to stunning landscapes, rich history, and unique cultural experiences. Our first stop was Maraya, an architectural marvel, consisting of nearly 10,000 mirrors. This mirrored building is the largest of its kind in the world and reflects the stunning desert landscape, creating a breathtaking optical illusion. Next, we will take you to Elephant Rock, a natural wonder that resembles an elephant. This unique rock formation is a popular spot for visitors to take photos and enjoy the stunning views in one of the many sunken lounges. For those looking for an adventure, 4WD driving in AlUla's desert is a must-try. It was certainly a thrill for us driving over sand dunes while taking in the views of the stunning rock formations. After a short visit at the Harrat Viewpoint, our next stop was the Oasis Heritage Trail, where you will experience the traditional oasis lifestyle of the locals. This historic trail dates back over 2,000 years and features stunning palm groves and historic buildings. We also visited the old Mudbrick Village, a fascinating cultural experience that showcases the traditional architecture and way of life of the local people. No visit to AlUla is complete without exploring Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Saudi Arabia's most significant archaeological treasures. You will see ancient tombs carved into the rocky terrain and learn about the Nabataean civilization that once inhabited the area. Finally, we visited the Old Town, which features beautifully preserved buildings and a walking street full of rustic shops, cafes and restaurants, set against a backdrop of the dramatic scenery. We can definitely recommend a visit to AlUla. It is a unique and unforgettable destination that should be on everyone’s bucket list. In this episode of our roadtrip in Saudi Arabia, we leave very early before dawn since we have to be in Al-Ula around 8:30 am. The journey between the oasis of Tayma and Al-Ula is about 237 km. The road is majestic with its lunar scenery which is not without reminding some science fiction movies. The journey will take us about 2h30.
Our arrival at the site of the Winter at Tantora festival was not the easiest.
After a 15-minute drive around Al-Ula, we located the festival site and present ourselves at the visitors' reception desk.
Despite the small number of people, there was a certain amount of disorganization. After 30 minutes, we finally get our passes. We are ready to visit the world's best preserved treasure, as long as we are among the first foreigners to set foot on this site.
Once again we have a busy day at Al-Ula with visits to the historical sites in the area, starting with Hegra, the main city in the south of the Nabataean kingdom, famous for its spectacular monumental tombs. It is also the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saudi Arabia.
Later in the day, we also visited the ancient city of Dadan and the Jabal Ikmah, a mountain where the surrounding populations came to offer their sacrifices to the gods.
Al-Ula is certainly the most impressive destination in Saudi Arabia. In fact, the Saudi authorities are relying heavily on the organization of the Winter at Tantora Festival to attract tourists from all over the world.
For those who wish to visit the site, you will need to contact the officials of the Tantora Winter Festival, which manages access to the main sites of interest in Al-Ula exclusively. Without them, it will be impossible for you to obtain access to the sites. It is best to call and book in advance. Another piece of advice, hotel rooms are scarce in Al-Ula and quite expensive. That's why we slept more than 200 km away from the city of Al Ula!

This is the incredible ancient Kingdom of Hegra (Madain Saleh) in the AlUla region of Saudi Arabia! It truly is spectacular. If you've visited or seen pictures of Petra in Jordan then these images of Hegra may look familiar... And that is because Hegra is a sister-city to Petra which was the capital of the ancient Nabatean Kingdom!
It was fascinating to visit and learn about - and very interesting to visit by bus with so few tourists (less than 15 of us!).

It is arguably the greatest non-religious attraction for tourists visiting Saudi Arabia. This was the second largest city of Nabatean kingdom whose capital was Petra (in today’s Jordan) over 2000 years ago. Its 131 tombs carved into the free standing rock of the Arabian desert is a sight to behold.
Tomb of Lihyan son of Kuza, also known as Qasr Al Farid or “The Lonely Castle”, is a well-known and iconic tomb in Mada’in Salih, Hegra in Saudi Arabia. The structure is said to have been erected in the 1st century CE and is unmatched when it comes to ancient design and architecture. Moreover It was also the first Saudi site to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
And not to miss Jabal AlFil (Elephant Rock), unlike the ornate, hand-carved facades of nearby Hegra’s Nabataean tombs, the trunk and body of this monolithic red sandstone beast were shaped by natural forces — millions of years of wind and water erosion.
The beauty of the unrefined structure is enhanced by a landscape of golden sands, studded with rocky outcops, many of which are equally impressive in size and have interesting shapes and figures.

The most iconic historical site of Saudi Arabia
Madain Saleh is the most iconic historical site of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the first to be listed as a UNESCO Word Heritage, back in 2008. It is located in the north of Madinah Province, in the area of Al-Ula, where many other fascinating archeological sites attest to the thousands of years of human occupation of the area thanks to the underground water available for millennia.
Madain Saleh means the cities of Saleh after the name of the Prophet Saleh who tried to convert the ancient people of Thamud to Islam. But this name started to be used only during the Ottoman occupation of the Hejaz, whereas the people who built this city, the Nabateans, called it Hijra (as it appears in some ancient inscriptions at the site), and the Romans used to call it Hegra. The historical site is still known today in Arabic as Al-Hijr, after which a Surat of the Holy Quran is named.
Mada'in Saleh (مـدائـن صـالـح) (Cities of Saleh), also called Al-Hijr or Hegra, is an archaelogical site located in the Sector of Al-Ula sector, within the Province of Al-Madinah in the Region of the Hejaz, Saudi Arabia. A majority of the vestiges date from the Nabatean Kingdom (1st century AD).The site constitutes the kingdom's southernmost and largest settlement after Petra, its capital. Traces of Lihyanite and Roman occupation before and after the Nabatean rule, respectively, can also be found.
Madain Saleh is a 5000 years old city of people of Thamuds (قومِ ثمود). ALLAH sent Hazrat Saleh A.S to preach them the true path. But they denied.
When ALLAH decided to punish them , He destroyed them by earth quake and lightning.
Thamuds were very strong and brilliant in carving out homes in the mountains.
