A Tourist's Guide to Dili, East Timor/Timor Leste

How to spend 24-hours in Dili, capital of one of the newest countries in the world.

After a short hop aboard Nam Air from Bali, I land in sleepy Dili. The Hotel Timor is a good base to explore the city on foot, where I see the Presidential Palace, the Santa Cruz Massacre Memorial, the port area and a church. I see lots of great statues along the way, too.

Then I catch a taxi to the Christ monument, and make it to the top to admire the view. After a brief stop by Dili Lighthouse, I end my day in Timor Plaza, where I enjoy a cooling beer in a rooftop restaurant.

Top best places to visit in Dili, East Timor
Dili lies on the northern coast of Timor Island, the easternmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands.

Dili is the largest city, chief port and commercial center of East Timor and also is the newest Asian capital.

Although there are not many tourist attractions in town but there are some interesting buildings like:
The Government Palace,

The Presidential Palace,

And the headquarter of the Ministry of Defense.

The most characteristic landmark is the Statue of Jesus that is constructed on a headland to the east of town.
The statue is about 27m tall and stands on a globe of earth and the view from across the bay is spectacular.
Of similar type but less famous is the Statue of John Paul II, located on the western side of the city.

Among the few places of worship, two are note worthy:
Motael Church
And An Nur Mosque.

East Timor is a developing country. It’s not cheap and there is much to be done.
Dili is a safe, charming, lazy little coastal city surrounded by wild nature.
And like in every other seaside city it has:
Several Nice Beaches;
Parks and Monuments;
A Small Port;
A Lighthouse;
A Promenade, a popular hangout for the young;
And the National Stadium.

In Dili you can find fresh fruits, vegetables and fish.

But most of all a lot of nice people!

Visiting Timor Leste - East Timor

East Timor, wonderful experience.

Timor-Leste, or East Timor, a Southeast Asian nation occupying half the island of Timor, is ringed by coral reefs teeming with marine life. Landmarks in the capital, Dili, speak to the country's struggles for independence from Portugal in 1975 and then Indonesia in 2002. The iconic 27m-tall Cristo Rei de Dili statue sits on a hilltop high over the city, with sweeping views of the surrounding bay. (Wiki)

⚡️ For a complete travel guide to Timor Leste?

What do you know about East Timor ( or Timor Leste as it is known over there)?

It is the newest country in the Southeast Asian bloc, gaining independence in 2002, and one of the least traveled country in Asia with only 60,000 travelers last year. To put that into perspective, Indonesia, its close neighbor had over 1.32 million arrivals last year.

Due to these facts, I decided to embark on a journey into this unknown land and traveled around the country for 10 days in July 2018. I got to see untouched nature unlike anything I have seen before, one of the smiliest people out there, and best of all, a country untouched by over-tourism. During my trip, I also saw poverty, unmaintained infrastructure, and a fire incident in the city. The trip was one hell of a rollercoaster ride that pushes me to the limit, to say the least. There is a long way to go for Timor Leste to become a prominent destination for travelers, but there is also an untapped potential that awaits those who seek real adventurers. If you are looking for a real adventure, you will surely find it here.

I hope you enjoy this video and I hope I was able to convey the beauty, and the life of the people in Timor Leste through this 3 minutes video.

Timor Leste (East Timor)

One of the last undiscovered destinations in the world! Timor Leste is a spectacular, pristine and engaging adventure travel destination.

Cristo Rei in Dili, Timor-Leste

Cristo Rei in Dili, Timor-Leste
Cristo Rei of Dili is a 27-metre-high statue of Jesus located atop a globe in Dili, East Timor. The statue was designed by Mochamad Syailillah, who is better known as Bolil. The statue was officially unveiled by Suharto in 1996 as gift from the Indonesian government to the people of East Timor, which was at the time still a province. The statue is one of the main tourist attractions in East Timor.

The statue, and the globe on which it rests, are situated at the end of the Fatucama peninsula, facing out to the ocean and can be reached by climbing some 500 steps.

East Timor is the one of the most Christian countries in the world, with 99.1% of the population subscribing to the faith. Meanwhile its neighbor next door, Indonesia, is the most populated Muslim country on Earth. While this religious intermingling has caused a few incidences of violence over the years, it also begat a compassionate yet awkward gift exchange.

This 89-foot statue of Cristo Rei was constructed in 1996 as a present from Indonesia to East Timor. Indonesian President Suharto wanted to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Indonesia annexing East Timor by half-apologizing to the East Timorese people for Indonesia’s occupation of the country. To please the Catholic majority, Suharto, a Muslim, built a giant statue of Jesus standing atop a globe, accessible by a 590-step staircase. The statue was built in the Indonesian city of Bandung, where nearly all of the workers carving the face of Jesus into copper were Muslim.

Despite three months of construction and a cost of 5 billion rupiah (around $559,000), the Indonesian government failed to appease the majority of East Timorese people. Part of the reasoning for this is that Suharto angled the statue to be facing the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, which caused controversy amongst the recipients of the gift.

The ploy had little effect on staving off the East Timorese independence movement, which the people won in 2002. But, like its counterpart in Rio De Janeiro, the Christ statue in Dili still stands.

View on Tasitolu, Dili from the mountain Foho Bolalau in rainy season, Timor Leste 03.2016

This area, that not many tourists actually know about, just at the western outskirts of DIli comprises 3 small picturesque lakes surrounded by mountains withing 1 km from the sea. During the rainy season they become more like 1 big lake (rather shallow though) with water coming close to people's houses especially after abundant rains. The area is famous for numerous birds, migratory and indigenous, staying there all year round, living in peace, because local people don't touch them. The mountains around them are topped by several cult monuments which are an object of pilgrimage in days of religious holidays.
The white traditional style chapel just at the main road is a quite famous religious sightseeing as well, but very few people would advance further into the local Tasitolu neighborhood especially without a guide. It's very nice and safe though, a bit dirty maybe but not more than any other living area in Asia.
