Virgin Gorda and The Baths Tour - What to Do on Your Day in Port
This is a quick look at a shore excursion from Tortola to The Baths on Virgin Gorda. We were on the Norwegian Epic out of Port Canaveral, Fl. It was early January, 2017. The name of the tour was Virgin Gorda and The Baths. We purchased this tour onboard for $89 US. I checked NCL's website and they don't list this tour anymore. It has been replaced with Virgin Gorda Baths & Snorkel for $119 US. Our tour did not include snorkeling, but we brought our own gear and went anyway.
The tour starts with a 40 minute boat ride from the island of Tortola, BVI to Virgin Gorda. Then about a 15 minute bus ride to the top of a hill. It takes about 30 minutes to walk down to Devil's Bay and the start of the Caves, which aren't really caves. They are piles of huge boulders. If there were no crowds, it would take about 15 minutes to walk through to the other side. With the crowds, about an hour. The Baths are a really unique looking place. The Baths was formed by granite that eroded into piles of boulders on the beach. Some of them are the size of a bus. It was a lot of fun going on this excursion, but there are a lot of people who also wanted to see it. It was very crowded. And that would be OK if they went one way through the boulders, but they don't. In fact, there are many ways in and out depending on which way you come and how adventurous you are. The snorkeling was average for the Caribbean. Very clear water, but not a lot to see.
If you always wanted to see The Baths (as we did), you really should go, crowds or not.

We stopped in B.V.I. Tortola while sailing aboard the Disney Fantasy Cruise ship and we did the Virgin Gorda Baths Excursion which was definitely not what we expected. Join us on this adventure!

Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!

Exploring Tortola, British Virgin Islands | Top 3 Places to Visit
Come along with us as we spend the day exploring our 3 favorite places on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Tortola, the entrance to the British Virgin Islands, has gorgeous white-sand beaches, incredible restaurants along the water, and some of the best beach bars in the Caribbean.
The three places we visited were:

Things To Do In Tortola

Things To Do In Tortola:Tortola and most of the British Virgin Islands are mountainous, and while they boast verdant-green hills, the climate and vegetation are much drier than many Caribbean isles. In Tortola, cactus and succulents are more common than ferns, and rushing streams and waterfalls are virtually nonexistent. The dry climate of the islands has a beneficial side effect: because of the lack of runoff, the water clarity is dependably higher than many other places in the Caribbean.
For that reason, Tortola and the BVI are a popular destination for divers and snorkelers. The protective effect of the islands surrounding Tortola causes the seas to be calm most of the time, making the region an attractive destination for those prone to motion sickness during small-boat excursions. The steady winds and calm seas also make Tortola and the BVI one of the world's premier yachting regions. Sailing excursions should be at the top of every interested visitor's list.
A visit to Tortola also offers a chance to experience other islands in the BVI chain. These include Norman Island, Jost Van Dyke, Peter Island, Marina Cay and Virgin Gorda. All are within reach for a day trip from Tortola, assuming you have a full day in port. This is not the case on all itineraries, so be sure to check ferry and ship schedules carefully before departing.

What to do in Tortola. We show you the beaches of the BVI
This was our first island hopping experience after moving to St. Thomas. We spent 3 days in Tortola. Since it was the off-season we couldn't find any tours to take us to Virgin Gorda or the baths, so we just spent the time exploring the island. Which turned out to be great. It gave us time to see pretty much the whole island. Follow us around the island and see where we went and where we stayed. Hint- We stayed on a boat, which was a lot of fun. ---------Tips and Gear to Bring------
Pro Tip--- Use a backpack cooler as your carry-on when you travel. Then unpack when you arrive and you have a cooler when you go to the beach. If you don't have to buy $6 beach beers it will pay for itself quickly. Here is the one I use -
I also use Micro Fiber towels that take up half the space as normal beach towels -
We also brought this sand-free blanket with us because it packs super small and we didn't need chairs -
And we brought our own snorkel gear. And good thing we did because it wasn't available to rent at the beaches.

On our Norwegian Escape cruise we went to the Baths at Virgin Gorda, we didn't have much time in port that day so we didn't get to see much of Tortola BVI.

Port Stop Excursion: The Baths on the island of Virgin Gorda
One of the best excursions we’ve taken during our port stops on our cruise a few months ago. I highly recommend seeing this beautiful beach. See the house-sized granite boulders at The Baths on the island of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean.
