Venice and Its Lagoon

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2012 | Venice, more than any other European city, has an endlessly seductive charm. For centuries, it was nicknamed La Serenissima, The Most Serenely Beautiful One— and for good reason. Along with sampling the sumptuous art treasures of Venice and exploring its back-street wonders, we'll cruise its lagoon, stopping in fiery Murano for glass, pastel Burano for lace, and murky Torcello for a sense of where Venice was born. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #venice

Venice, Italy: A Boat Tour of the Lagoon - Rick Steves’ Europe Travel Guide - Travel Bite

Watch the full episode: Surrounding Venice are a string of low-lying islands, which make a nice escape from the hubbub — especially if you can linger after the tourists return to the city. Regular ferryboats and water taxis connect Venice with nearby lagoon communities like Murano, famous for glass, and Burano, with its lace shops and photogenic Crayola-colored houses. ???????? Venetian Lagoon: travel documentary on the secret of Venice

Do you know what is the secret of the millenarian history of the Republic of Venice? It is its lagoon, which provided shelter, food and goods to Venice to flourish on international trade. In this travel documentary we propose a new way to explore and understand Venice, even without setting foot on the city. Our way is to set base camp in one of its islands: we chose Lido given its proximity and access to the beach. And from there, take advantage of every kind of boat to explore the other islands: Murano, Burano and Torcello are famous and part of every touristic package. But going to Pellestrina, San Lazzaro degli Armeni, Malamocco - or exploring le Vignole and Sant'Erasmo with a kayak - gets you off the beaten path

Venice: City of Dreams

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2012 | After sorting through the monuments of Venice's powerful past, we'll trace its decline from Europe's most powerful city to its most hedonistic one. We'll cruise the Grand Canal, luxuriate in a venerable café, and savor fresh fish canal-side with Venetian friends. Becoming as anonymous as possible in this city of masks, we'll be dazzled by masterpieces of the Venetian Renaissance and get intimate with the city of Casanova...on a gondola in the moonlight. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #venice

Avel Dro in Venice - exploring remote backwaters of the lagoon

My camping dinghy Avel Dro is trailed 1600km across Europe, all the way from Brittany to Venice. There she joins the Vela Raid, an international group of dinghies and small yachts, for a cruise in company in the Venetian lagoon. After the Raid I am joined by a friend, and we continue to explore the Lagoon for a further week.

INTERESTED IN DINGHY CRUISING?

APOLOGIES
For my poor Italian and also for some relatively poor quality video at times. I was using a brand new GoPro Max, as my main GoPro ceased to work. I did not really know how to use the new GoPro, or how good its footage and sound would turn out to be. It was bought to take mast top footage, which I did experiment with briefly, but I was forced to use it as my main boat-mounted camera instead.

AVEL DRO
Do you want a boat like mine?
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994, which I bought in France and then imported into the UK, and more recently returned to France again. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century, hence her single boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. The name Avel Dro is Breton, and basically means a whirlwind.
Length 4.44 m
Sail area 12.2 m²
Beam 1.70 m
Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
Design category C3
François Vivier's website (in English):

Similar dinghies can often be found for sale on the website of the French magazine Le Chasse-Marée:

Or try Le Bon Coin, (where you can buy anything in France):

Note on post-Brexit trade rules. Since January 2021, Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) residents who buy a boat in France or elsewhere in the EU, with the intention of importing it into the UK, should pay VAT and other duties on the import.

Venice and the Venetian Lagoon an amazing place to visit.

We visit Venice City , and the historically beautiful islands Burano , Murano and Torcello. This was a full blown Italian assault on the senses , a memory for lifetime and we hop you enjoy it.

The Campsite at Ca'Savio - was the best Italian site we stayed on and located at the side of the Adriatic Sea meant the added bonus of some sunrise photography.

On Behance page we have a number of image resources from our travels including this venture.

Venice is unique in the world: an architectural tour-de-force built on 118 islands in a lagoon of the Adriatic Sea. Old documents show the city was founded as long ago as 421.
Venice is a living museum. But one of such a kind that it has now reached the status of world heritage.
Will Venice ever disappear under the water? It is a pressing question that is occupying the minds of scientists and decision-makers. Global warming, melting ice caps and subsidence of the land north of the Adriatic are the doom scenario hanging over the desks of future thinkers.

In the palazzo Ca'Rezzonico history bears responsibility to bygone times. Back then Venice was able to develop mainly because of the major food shortages the Byzantine empire was suffering from.
The Rialto archipelago was the centre for striking bargains. Rialto with its famous bridge is a must-see for camera toting visitors and day-trippers.
On the island of Murano close by are the glass factories that think up those beautiful things, and sometimes even make them.

Meet the S.S. La Venezia, our Super Ship on the Venice Lagoon

The S.S. La Venezia debuted in 2020 to bring travelers an unparalleled way to explore Italy's Veneto region. The redesign of the S.S. La Venezia drew influence from the fine Fortuny fabrics displayed prominently onboard. Murano glass, gilded accents and artistic etched elements pay homage to popular Venetian aesthetics of the early 20th century, creating an onboard atmosphere that is at once elegant and nostalgic.

San Marco the patron saint and the horses. The original horses are actually inside the basilica.
The basilica and the oversized clock tower staring at the Doge's palace with the famous bridge of Sighs. The palace was built at the beginning of the 14th century. This is where the Doge, the almighty ruler, arranged the affairs that benefited Venice and the state. But the Doges too knew: whoever climbs high, can fall far. At the end of the 14th century Doge Falier tried to cut the ground from under the aristocracy, the result was he lost his head. From then on the Doges were chosen by the nobility and they were not allowed to leave Venice or even speak to foreign guests in private.

To travel by gondola you need one. Gondolas are made and maintained at Squero di San Trovaso. They saw, plane, mill and paint, that is after all what they do at a gondola shipyard. Gondolas are made of different types of wood, for instance oak, walnut, elm, spruce, larch and lime.
