Cotswolds, England: Village Charm - Rick Steves’ Europe Travel Guide - Travel Bite

More info about travel to the Cotswolds: As with many fairy-tale regions in Europe, the present-day beauty of England's Cotswolds was the result of an economic disaster — in this case, the collapse of the wool industry. The fine Cotswold towns fell into a time warp, creating a rustic charm that is the basis of today's new prosperity from tourism.

The Most Beautiful ENGLISH villages in the COTSWOLDS - Part 1

Some of the most beautiful English villages can be found in the Cotswolds. This guide shows you Englands prettiest villages and historical properties from this beautiful part of England.

Our 2 part guide, starts in Castle Combe, voted the prettiest village in England a number of times. Hardly changed since the 16 hundreds, this sleepy village is also famous for being the backdrop in a number of films, including Steven Spielberg's War Horse and the 1967 classic Dr Dolittle.

Walking down by the river By Brook, the weaver's cottages are the highlight. Home to the local weavers back in the 15th century, they were highly skilled craftsmen men and women and held high status in the village.
Castle Combe

Bibury is not to be missed on any trip to the Cotswolds. Possibly the most beautiful chocolate box village in the Cotswolds and noted as such by William Morris when he visited. The Arlington Row is the highlight of the visit and again seen in movies like Stardust and Bridget Jones Diary. It can get very busy here so suggest you come early morning or late afternoon when the tour buses have passed.

Bibury

Burford has a sweeping long high street with delightful shops, antiques and tearooms. The 15th-century parish church of St. John Baptist is a magnificently preserved example and should not be missed whilst in the town.

The Ultimate COTSWOLD Village - Early Morning WALK in Cotswolds Heaven || Duntisbourne Abbots

Duntisbourne Abbots is a village that forms part of the Cotswold District. The village is Saxon in origin. The Cotswolds, in general, were inhabited during the Roman occupation of Britain, and it's plausible that there was a settlement in or around Duntisbourne Abbots during this period. Duntisbourne Abbots has a mix of Cotswold stone houses (some dating back to the 17th century). St Peter's Church was built in the 12th century on the site of an earlier Saxon church. The tower dates from Norman times.

Kingham is a pretty Cotswold village in the peaceful Evenlode valley with some elegant stone and thatch cottages mostly dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Cotswolds village is popular with the rich and famous.

Kingham is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when the name is recorded as Caningeham.

The village is unique amongst Cotswold villages, because it is served by a main line railway station to London (1.5 hours away).

In 2006 the readers of Country Life magazine voted Kingham 'England's Favourite Village'.

Beautiful Cotswold villages. A walk from Upper to Lower Slaughter.

☕️
????
????
????

This text is an edited version of the captions (enable CC) in the video. This morning we are walking from Upper Slaughter to Lower Slaughter. Upper Slaughter is a small village in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. The main town of the Cotswold district is Cirencester, a 30 minute car drive away. Travelling from London by car is about 140 km and would take over two hours. Public transport from London would take around three hours, by train, then a bus ride and then a 30 minute walk. In 2011 the population here was recorded at 177 people. As there are so few houses the property market in the village is small. There have been 12 houses sold in the last five years. Those house sales averaged at £1,613,561 per property. Which is £1,332,561 above the UK national average (April 2022). Weather; average temperature is as low as 1°C around December to January, climbing up to a maximum average around 22°C from June to August. The name Slaughter may sound ghoulish, but originates from an Old English term “slothre”, meaning wet land or a muddy place. The village was built on the banks of the River Eye, a small river branching from the River Windrush. Lower Slaughter is also on the River Eye, only a two km walk away. Excavations in the area revealed there could have been a small Roman settlement here. The first records of Upper Slaughter are of its Manor, in the Domesday Book (1086). The manor is recorded as being in the possession of powerful Norman nobleman; Roger de Lacy. During the 12th century Upper Slaughter was the site of an adulterine castle. Adulterine castles were castles built without royal approval. They were mainly built during the Anarchy, a civil war between 1139 and 1154. The castle at Upper Slaughter was built of earth and timber. A mound on the north side of the village marks the remains of the castle. The church we saw earlier dates back to the 12th century. The church underwent restoration work in 1877, but retained some of its Saxon features. There is a gabled Manor House in the village dating from the 15th century, after much neglect it was restored in the 19th century, it is now a private residence. Next door to this building is the 17th century hotel; Lords Of The Manor Hotel. Upper Slaughter is known as a Double Thankful Village, meaning the village lost no men in the armed forces during World War I and II. In 1944 a German bomber dropped 2000 incendiary bombs on the village. Buildings were damaged, but there were no fatalities or injuries. The BBC series Father Brown (2013–2022) has been filmed here, as well as the Charles Dickens BBC mini-series Our Mutual Friend (1998). We are now heading into Lower Slaughter, from the west end of the village. We pass-by the water mill in a few seconds. A mill has been recorded here all the way back to the 11th century. The current 19th century water mill is open five days a week as a museum. You can learn more about bread making and the workings of the mill. The mill was last used to grind flour for bread in 1958. As well as the water mill, the local inn and manor house support the village’s main trade of tourism. Both Upper and Lower Slaughter are very attractive villages. Most of the homes here are 16th and 17th century, built from Cotswold limestone. There are more modern residences that have been built the other side of the old village. These homes put the average house price in the area at £468,750. There have only been two house sales recorded in the last five years. Access and parking to both villages can be hard. The roads and lanes are narrow, meaning vehicles like tour buses can not enter. Parts of the 2020 film adaptation of Jane Austin’s Emma were filmed here.

Early Morning Walk || Exploring Bagendon, COTSWOLDS Hidden Gem

Bagendon is an archaeological site located near Cirencester in the Cotswolds District of Gloucestershire, England. It is an Iron Age hillfort that dates back to the 1st century BCE. The hillfort is situated on a hill overlooking the Churn Valley and covers an area of approximately 16 hectares.

Bagendon was an important settlement during the Iron Age and was occupied by the Dobunni tribe, who were a Celtic people. The hillfort was fortified with defensive earthworks, including ramparts and ditches, which would have provided protection to the inhabitants.

Excavations at Bagendon have revealed evidence of roundhouses, storage pits, and other structures, indicating that it was a thriving community. The site has also yielded a significant number of artifacts, such as pottery, coins, and metalwork, providing insights into the daily lives of the people who lived there.

One of the notable features of Bagendon is its proximity to the Roman town of Corinium - modern-day Cirencester (Capital of the Cotswolds). The hillfort may have served as a precursor to the Roman settlement and could have had strategic importance in the region.

Today, Bagendon is an important archaeological site and is managed by English Heritage. Visitors can explore the site and learn about its history through information panels and guided tours. It offers a glimpse into the Iron Age past of the area and the cultural and social aspects of the people who inhabited it.

Four Villages in the Cotswolds, UK, Bibury, Malmesbury, Tetbury, Lacock

We are taking you on a visit to four of the beautiful villages of the Cotswolds in England. Come along for a wonderful day trip to:

00:14 Bibury,
04:03 Malmesbury,
06:39 Tetbury, and
09:28 Lacock

A short drive in the countryside soon brings us to Bibury. The main attraction here is this splendid row of stone cottages that dates back to the 14th century, in a picturesque setting next to the River Coln, and the open meadow in front.
Bibury is a small village in a rural setting, with the oval outline showing the location of that row of stone cottages called Arlington Row.
We'll be showing you many views of that beautiful sight and also taking you to the famous trout farm in the heart of Bibury, with its water features and lush landscaping.
The small Coln River is a tributary of the Thames and makes an idyllic setting for the stone houses and the pretty flower gardens of the village, with several bridges for cars and pedestrians connecting the two sides of town.
Arlington Row is one of England's most iconic and photographed sites, so famous, the picture has been on the UK passport for a decade. Originally built in the 14th century as a monastic wool storehouse, it was converted in the 17th century into a row of cottages for weavers, who supplied cloth for the two mills in the area, which made this village very prosperous from the wool trade.
This complex of old stone buildings is occupied by tenants who rent their homes from the National Trust.
One of these homes, at number nine, is a holiday cottage that you can rent. However, you do have to rent it for a minimum of three nights. It's got two bedrooms on two floors and can house up to three guests, with a private garden at the rear.
That will lead you to one of England's oldest working trout farms, originally founded in 1902.
It has 15 acres of beautiful farmland and springs, with a trout hatchery that produces over 6 million trout every year.
As usual, the best times to come are shoulder season, either April and May, or September and October, when the weather is quite nice, and the crowds are minimal.
Bibury is the first of our four Cotswold villages that we're visiting on a daytrip from the city of Bath. We're traveling in a small van with our driver-guide provided by Mad Max tours.
Continuing along now through the pretty countryside of Wiltshire, heading for the Cotswold town of Malmesbury. The charming High Street is bursting with an array of independent retailers and eateries, and the town has occasional festivals for music, history and the arts.
The 15th-century Market Cross is one of the country's best preserved, right next to the arch of Birdcage Walk that leads us into the Abbey grounds. This church is always the main focus of any visit to this charming little town.
The church is so old that the first King of all England was buried here in the year 941, honored with this monumental statue, but in the 14th century, the remains of King Athelstan were moved from here to an unknown location. The Abbey is still an active parish church.
Next door is the Old Bell, oldest hotel in England, founded in the early 13th century as lodgings for visiting monks. It's a four-star hotel with a high-quality restaurant.
Next, we are heading to the second largest town in the Cotswolds, Tetbury, situated in the area of outstanding natural beauty, surrounded by landscapes of gently rolling hills.
Right away next to the car park we see the historic cobbled lane called Chipping Steps, lined with picturesque stone cottages.
The historic Market House is at the crossroads at the center of town. It was built in 1655 and it's the most famous building in Tetbury, listed as a historic protected property.
Called Long Street, this is where most of the retail action takes place. It is very easy to explore – just walk all the way down one side and then cross over and walk back up the other side. Although it's called Long Street, it's just 300 meters from one end to the other.
The center of Tetbury is especially renowned for its antique shops and independent boutiques. This High Street has been named one of the UK's top 10 favorite streets for shopping by Homes and Antiques Magazine.
We're moving along now to the final stop on our Cotswold daytrip, the little town of Lacock, which dates from the 13th century and is full of traditional half-timbered and stone houses. It's the quintessential English village.
One of the first landmarks we shall come across is this 14th-century Tithe Barn, which is a grade 1 listed historic property.
Lacock was granted market status and developed a thriving wool industry during the Middle Ages. But production of wool ended in the 19th century, depriving the village of its main source of income, which fortunately for us has kept new developments to a minimum, resulting in this historic gem.
You can find more videos about other Cotswold villages in our collection, and also a series of films about the main city of Bath.

Gimbal Walk TV visits Cirencester, the largest Town in The Cotswolds England. We take a walk around Cirencester Town Centre to see what this historic Cotswolds town is like.
Also watch Whitby ????????

Cirencester is a large market town in Gloucestershire, and set in the Cotswolds UK. Situated 80 miles west of London, this town has lots of tourist attractions and beautiful buildings to see if you travel here for a look around.

This is a historic Roman town just minutes away from the beautiful Cotswolds villages, and with a friendly welcome and a terrific market place.

Often referred to as the Capital of the Cotswolds, Cirencester town centre is dominated by the magnificent Parish Church of St John Baptist overlooking Market Square and the town centre streets full of shops, pubs, restaurants and hotels. Cirencester Parish Church of St. John Baptist is the largest parish church in Gloucestershire.

No trip to the Cotswolds would be complete without a visit to Cirencester for a walk around these historic streets to take a look at the history of the town, and to get a bite to eat or a drink in one of the little coffee shops or cafes in the narrow streets or yards here.

We start this Cirencester Tour at The Bathurst Estate and Cirencester Park on Park Lane, which has a fantastically huge wall and hedgerow to block nosey visitors from peeking in!

As we continue our Cirencester walk we head into the town centre and down past the Corinium Museum which is home to many Roman artefacts from the town and surrounding Cotswolds Villages.

The market stalls in market square are selling their goods as we walk past on the way to the Corn Hall Arcade and Indoor Market.

Our route on this Cirencester Walking Tour is Park Lane, Park Street, Black Jack Street, Silver Street, Market Place, Castle Street and Gosditch Street. We also visit Dollar Street.

On the way we see Cirencester Park, Corinium Museum, Cirencester Visitor Information Centre, St John Baptist Church and the war memorial in Market Square, as well as Corn Hall Indoor Market.
