Abandoned places in NJ. Pine Barrens

There are hundreds pins marking historical or abandoned places on my map. Part of them is already explored or even filmed, but most has not yet been discovered.

For today’s journey I chose few locations in Pine Barrens what I have never explored before. Join me to visit these secluded places. As usual, before the trip I had never known what might be found and what awaited me. Of course, I had to exclude some posted locations. Regrettably, but the most of attractive and mysterious places in NJ, as a rule, are surrounded by “No trespassing” signs.

First location is Estellville glassworks ruins. Shameful, but haven't never been here before. The site is an early 19th century glass factory that was built between 1825-1826 and was in operation from 1826-1877. The glassworks factory flourished during the mid-1800's and produced both hollow ware (like bottles) and window glass.

Second pin on the map. Didn’t manage to recognize what was there. Well, let’s see in person.

About third abandoned place for today I learned from a subscriber. Some old rusting cars on rails. Not sure if they have any historical significance, but I was nearby and decided to take a look.

Last location was Hermann Ghost Town. The second-largest glass factory in the Pine Barrens was built in 1873 to produce shaded hollow ware and Christmas decorations. Factory workers lived in the small town of 70 homes, but now it’s tricky enough to find last disappearing traces of it. Only several foundations and glass furnace remains may be found in the woods along Mullica River.

Abandoned house in the woods of New Jersey. Shocking finds!

#Abandoned #Haunted #House #Exploration #abandonedhouse

A couple days ago I was exploring forests in New Jersey using Google maps and accidentally noted the roof of a collapsed building in the woods.

Today I went there to explore the location. What I found was unexpected and stunning. Shocking finds were discovered on the location - an abandoned house destroyed by fire, neglected boats, cars, truck, pool...
Have no idea what happened to family lived here but, sure, I found remains of tragedy.

Abandoned 1700's Paper Mill & Ghost Town NJ Pine Barrens Harrisville

This area is off limits but you can view from outside the fence and there is n area across the street closer to the dam that you can view and explore. Please make sure you park over by the dam in the parking lot otherwise you will get a ticket.

Harrisville was a small production community that was settled from around 1795 to 1914, located about 6 miles northwest of New Gretna in the New Jersey Pine Barrens by Basto Villiage and Bass River. It is best known for producing paper under the Harris family's ownership in the mid 1800's. It was abandoned and then burned down in 1914 leaving only ruins. It is a part of the history of the Pine Barrens and New Jersey. Only the decayed ruins of this town exist today.

PINE BARRENS: Sparse Southern New Jersey (Including Batsto Village)

The Pine Barrens is one of the few rural areas in the dense state of New Jersey. Since the terrain doesn't allow for large urban development like in the New York and Philadelphia metros, the towns are smaller, quieter, and there are even some ghost towns. It's also a unique ecosystem that only exists at certain parts of the Atlantic coast. This tour will take you to the communities of Egg Harbor City and Hammonton, two nearby townships, and then to the most famous ghost town in the state: Batsto Village.

Hiking the Pine Barrens: Abandoned, Roadside and Historic

Hiking the Pine Barrens: Abandoned, Roadside and Historic

The New Jersey Pine Barrens, also known as the Pinelands or simply the Pines, is the largest remaining example of the Atlantic coastal pine barrens ecosystem, stretching across more than seven counties of New Jersey. Two other large, contiguous examples of this ecosystem remain in the northeastern United States: the Long Island Central Pine Barrens, and the Massachusetts Coastal Pine Barrens. The name pine barrens refers to the area's sandy, acidic, nutrient-poor soil. Although European settlers could not cultivate their familiar crops there, the unique ecology of the Pine Barrens supports a diverse spectrum of plant life, including orchids and carnivorous plants. The area is also notable for its populations of rare pygmy pitch pines and other plant species that depend on the frequent fires of the Pine Barrens to reproduce. The sand that composes much of the area's soil is referred to by the locals as sugar sand.

The Pine Barrens remains mostly rural and undisturbed despite its proximity to the sprawling metropolitan cities of Philadelphia and New York City, in the center of the very densely populated Boston-Washington Corridor on the Eastern Seaboard. The heavily traveled Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway traverse sections of the eastern and southern Pine Barrens, respectively. The Pine Barrens territory helps recharge the 17-trillion-US-gallon Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer containing some of the purest water in the United States. As a result of all these factors, in 1978 Congress passed legislation to designate 1.1 million acres of the Pine Barrens as the Pinelands National Reserve to preserve its ecology. A decade later, it was designated by the United Nations as an International Biosphere Reserve. Development in the Pinelands National Reserve is strictly controlled by an independent state/federal agency, the New Jersey Pinelands Commission.

The Pinelands Reserve contains the Wharton, Brendan T. Byrne, Penn, and Bass River state forests. The reserve also includes two National Wild and Scenic Rivers: the Maurice and the Great Egg Harbor.
