Unagi (うなぎ) is freshwater eel and it’s a real delicacy in Japan. There are many many restaurant dedicated to serving only unagi, and in Tokyu you have plenty of choices. Thanks to my friend David ( I went to Obana Restaurant (尾花) which is a very highly rated, some say it’s the best, unagi in Tokyo.
What I like about Obana Restaurant (尾花) is that there are no reservations, so it’s first come, first serve, and it’s one of the classic Japanese food restaurants where you have to arrive early and wait in line for a chance to eat this legendary unagi. I arrived about 1 hour early, and already there were 20 people in the line in front of me. The wait was quite interesting, because as I was standing in line, a festival parade came walking right past.
The restaurant is within an old style Japanese building, with tatami floors, and you sit on the floor with a low table. They first steam the eel, and then grill it, and serve it in the lacquered box the traditional Japanese way.
I’ve had unagi before, but nothing compared to this unagi. It was absolutely exquisite, the most buttery perfectly cooked unagi I’ve ever had. Also, I liked how the sauce glaze was not overpowering like it sometimes can be, but it was light and just accented the wonderful eel.
Obana Restaurant (尾花) is not cheap, but the quality you get is mind-blowing.

Scrumptious Unagi (Grilled Eel) Lunch in Tokyo
Today, I discovered a delicious Unagi (freshwater eel) restaurant in Chitose-Karasuyama. It's called Unagi Arai and located 2 minutes by walk from the station.
I really liked it because the Unagi was tasty and fleshy as was the Unagi liver skewer which is not always the case!
It was pricey but I heard last winter that the Unagi prices would increase for lack of eel, so the places I usually go too might have gotten more expensive too... that is something I should check out!

We were wondering the Shibuya district of Tokyo and found a popular restaurant that serves very good Unagi Donburi or Unadon - grilled eel rice bowl.
Amazing Grilled Eel (Unagi) in Nagoya- Hitsumabushi
Unagi is Simon’s favourite seafood in Japan. No exaggeration here. Eel is absolutely delightful. So when we were invited to Nagoya to try Hitsumabushi (which is a great way to have eel), with one of the BIGGEST pieces a restaurant could sell, we were all for it.

GRILLED EEL IN JAPAN ♦ Trying Unagi in Narita!
Today we're trying Grilled Eel in Narita! Called unagi in Japanese, there are many restaurants selling this dish on Nakamachi Street. Which does one choose? Most shops had employees standing at the storefront, warmly inviting passersby inside. Mommy Oh and I were instantly drawn into the shop displaying their food preparation. In the public eye, men were skewering eel and sharpening their knife. We order three items: eel over rice, miso soup with carp, and assorted pickled vegetables. Would you wait 2 hours for the best unagi? Obana in Tokyo, Japan. #unagi #japanesefood #tokyofood
It’s been 3 months but I still think about the unagi from Obana. This was the best grilled freshwater eel that I have ever had. Some extra info if you want to eat here:
For lunch, there are only 2 rounds, each round serves about 20-22 people. By the time I arrived at 10:40 am (50 min before opening), the first round was already full and I had to wait for the second round. To eat in the first round, I highly recommend arriving more than 1 hour early before opening.
For itinerary purposes, please note that it takes 30-40 minutes for them to grill each order of eel and they do not start cooking until you are given a table. I know the wait is long but it was definitely worth it in my opinion.

Unagi, Grilled eel Maekawa 東京駒形 うなぎ 前川
One of Tokyo’s oldest and respected eel restaurants, Maekawa, Soramachi, at Tokyo Sky Tree is introduced in this video.
Maekawa was established 200 years ago. They prepare everything very carefully, serving special eel and sauce.
The restaurant is open from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Plan on spending around 5000 yen per person.
