(Saglyk ýoly) Path of health:
As a tourist, you can not (legally) run in the mountains. The border to Iran is cutting the mountains and some areas are forbidden to enter. But never give up. Finally I was told of the Path of health, the „saglyk ýoly“ and I found some information about it: it is situated nearby the mountains and it has been built by the order of the president for the better health of the Turkmen People. It is not a round trip – there are (so far I know) 2 different paths. One is around 5 or 6k (officially – but it seems to me there is a longer range), the other one is around 12k one way. Some links in the internet say it’s 38k in total.
So how to get there? From the hotel to the path of health means more than 20k, so running was not an option. Taxi!

But how to get back? Yeah, taxi. … But wait … how to find a taxi in the desert? Problem is that English-speaking locals are hard to find. The girls at the information desk at our hotel lobby were very helpful.

Seyitdzhemaliddin Mosque, Ashgabat
This medieval mosque was built in the XV century. Unfortunately the building was almost completely destroyed by the Ashgabat earthquake, and today it comes in front of the tourist in a renovated version. The mosque consists of 17 rooms, including a square hall covered with a dome supported by for large arches. The hall walls are divided into three floors. Two wide and deep niches lead to the terrace. Spiral stairs located in the corner of the hall lead to the galleries on the first and third floors and also to the roof. In the yard, from northern side there stands a large ayvan (trestle-bed).

The mosque singularity is in its ornamental finishing. The mosque façade is engraved with an inscription saying that this building was erected under Abul-Kasim Babur, Temurid prince who was ruling in Khorasan (1447- 1457). The main portal arch is decorated with figures of fabulous dragons. According to historians these dragons are painted there as magic creatures, allegedly preserving Dzemal’s House from evil.

Cableway to Iranian Border
From Ashgabat there is a cable car into the mountains that make up the southern border of Turkmenistan with Iran. For 2 Minat (75 cents) once can ride the 3.5k cable car dangling over precarious rock gorges and pits of gazelle bones. The cable car, which cost an estimated US $20 million to construct, takes less than ten minutes to complete. At the summit there are several points that overlook the white city of Ashgabat. From this vantage point the pine tree forests that are being cultivated in the desert sands seems even more unreal, like planting pine trees on the moon. If you were to face towards Iran, you could see small shacks extending across the ridge line where Turkmen guards kept watch. There were no roads to these shacks and I was reminded of the movie Dances with Wolves, where the lone soldier was posted in the wild. These guards, we pondered, must do week long shifts in order to warrant the strenuous and dangerous hike from where the road ends to their precarious perches along the ridge line.
When looking north, the Kopet Dag mountain range, which constitutes the major land mark of the Turkmen-Iranian border, is also the perfect place to view the Health Walk. This structure is, perhaps, the most famous of Turkmenbashi’s pet projects. The health walk is a concrete staircase extending from the outskirts of Ashgabat, up the Kopet Dag mountains and then along the border before cutting sharply west and ending on the highest summit overlooking the city.

Konye-Urgench
Located on the south side of the Amu-Darya River, Old Ürgenç was situated on one of the most important medieval paths: the Silk Road, the crossroad of western and eastern civilisations. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Turkmenistan, lying within a vast zone of protected landscape and containing a large number of well-preserved monuments, dating from the 11th to the 16th centuries. They comprise mosques, the gates of a caravanserai, fortresses, mausoleums and a minaret, and the influence of their architectural style and craftsmanship reached Iran, Afghanistan and the later architecture of the Mogul Empire of 16th-century India.
Kunya Urgench is a municipality of about 30,000 inhabitants in north Turkmenistan, just south from its border with Uzbekistan. It is the site of the ancient town of Ürgenç (Urgench), which contains the ruins of the capital of Khwarazm, a part of the Achaemenid Empire. Its inhabitants deserted the town in the 1700s in order to develop a new settlement, and Kunya-Urgench has remained undisturbed ever since. In 2005, the ruins of Old Urgench were inscribed on the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.

Turkmenistan-Ashgabat (Turkmenbashi Mosque) Part 21

Turkmenbashi Ruhy Mosque, Gypjak village
The Mosque built in honor of Turkmenbashi
Eleven kilometers to the west of Ashgabat there stands the largest mosque in Central Asia and main mosque of Turkmenistan – The Turkmenbashi Ruhy Mosque. Like all other buildings of the period of independence it differs with its immensity and grandiosity.

The mosque was built in 2002-2004 on the initiative of Turkmenbashi and named after him. Its word-for-word translation means “the mosque of Turkmenbashi spirituality” or “the mosque of spirit of Turkmenbashi”. By the way the mosque is located in Gypjak – the Turkmenbashi native village.
The construction of the mosque cost to Turkmenistan $100,000,000. The whole complex is built in white marble by French company Bouygues. The total area occupied by the complex is 18,000,000 m2. The mosque itself is a one-domed building, surrounded by 4 minarets. The height of the mosque is 55 m, and that of the minarets is 91 m to symbolize the year 1991 – when Turkmenistan gained independence. The building is accessible through 9 entries with arches. Around the mosque there are numerous fountains as though the mosque stands on the water and it makes the mosque look very good.
The mosque walls are traditionally decorated with suras from Koran and also phrases from Rukhnama – the book on spirituality and morality written by Turkmenbashi himself. Due to this fact the mosque is not recognized by many Muslims.
Inside the mosque there is a huge praying hall with white columns and richly painted celestial blue dome. The heated floor is covered with a huge hand-made Turkmen carpet. The mosque can accommodate about 10,000 people, but visitors are usually few there. Under the mosque there is an underground garage capable to park over 400 cars.
Near the mosque, there is the Turkmenbashi Mausoleum – more modest in décor and size. Turkmenbashi himself is buried in the central sarcophagus, and around it, there are three more sarcophagi with his mother and two brothers, and one in addition, which is empty – a symbolic sarcophagus with the name of Turkmenbashi’s father, buried in another place.
Turkmenbashi’s mother and both of his brothers are known to die during the earthquake of 1948. As far as Turkmenbashi himself concerns, he had a narrow escape: that very day, he got up early and went outside for a walk.
Opposite the entry to the mausoleum, there is a memorial complex, erected in memory of the people killed by the earthquake of 1948.
The Turkmenbashi Ruhy Mosque is a national asset and pride of the Turkmen people. Its image can also be seen on a national currency – 500-TMT banknote.

Central Asia/Turkmenistan (Highlights 2018) Part 28

Turkmenistan:
Turkmenistan Turkmen: Türkmenistan, formerly known as Turkmenia, is a country in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north and east, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south and southwest, and the Caspian Sea to the west. Ashgabat is the capital and largest city. The population of the country is 5.6 million, the lowest of the Central Asian republics.
Turkmenistan has been at the crossroads of civilizations for centuries. In medieval times, Merv was one of the great cities of the Islamic world and an important stop on the Silk Road, a caravan route used for trade with China until the mid-15th century. Annexed by the Russian Empire in 1881, Turkmenistan later figured prominently in the anti-Bolshevik movement in Central Asia. In 1925, Turkmenistan became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic (Turkmen SSR); it became independent upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Turkmenistan possesses the world's sixth largest reserves of natural gas resources. Most of the country is covered by the Karakum (Black Sand) Desert. From 1993 to 2017, citizens received government-provided electricity, water and natural gas free of charge.
The sovereign state of Turkmenistan was ruled by President for Life Saparmurat Niyazov (also known as Turkmenbashi) until his death in 2006. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow was elected president in 2007. According to Human Rights Watch, Turkmenistan remains one of the world’s most repressive countries. The country is virtually closed to independent scrutiny, media and religious freedoms are subject to draconian restrictions, and human rights defenders and other activists face the constant threat of government reprisal. After suspending the death penalty, the use of capital punishment was formally abolished in the 2008 constitution.Wikipedia

Ashgabat – The White Marble City
The City of Love holding the record for the highest concentration of white marble buildings in the world – 4.5 million square metres of them – many bore an embossed bust of Niyazov, attached to the top corner like a postage stamp. Their architectural style alternately described as ‘Walmart-meets-desert-emirate’ or ‘somewhere between Las Vegas and Pyongyang,’ the towers bore the logos of Western and Korean companies: Coca-Cola, LG, Samsung. Sponsored, yet barely occupied, their expansive car parks stood empty. A marmoreal chimera not constructed from solid marble, the tiles had fallen from some high-rises, others slanted through subsidence.
